Once a Great Workspace, Now a Frustrating & Insulting Waste of Time and Money

The company I own and run had been a client of Spaces Meatpacking District for more than six years — through private offices, coworking, and eventually a virtual office plan. For most of that time, I overlooked IWG’s maliciously confusing billing and automated bureaucracy because the on-site team made up for it: they were competent, personable, and kept the place running with an inspiring, helpful energy.

That all changed this summer when IWG eliminated the Community Manager role and replaced it with a “Community Associate” position — now held by a new arrival to the center. Since that change, this once-fantastic location has become a nightmare. The new associate is openly hostile, dismissive, and seemingly rewarded for obstruction rather than service.

Most notably, a minor billing glitch earlier in the year — one that even IWG couldn’t explain — was later invoked as a pretext for returning correctly addressed business mail, including a client’s check that was sent back as “undeliverable.” This was particularly galling given that the same associate had personally handed me identically addressed mail and checks for months — and the company itself had delivered identically addressed items for six years without incident. When I sought clarification, I received a carousel of contradictory explanations — first that USPS returned it on their own, then that Spaces did so because of an insultingly absurd alleged “name mismatch.” It all carried the distinct odor of someone screwing up and being constitutionally unable or unwilling to take accountability in order to make it right.

The entire episode has been an enormous waste of time, and it was not the first frustrating and needlessly hostile interaction with this employee. First, early in the summer, a request to turn down suddenly loud music in the business lounge on a quiet Friday was met with indifference, then mistruths, and then an attempt to deflect towards more billing irregularities on IWG’s part (such irregularities are not uncommon with this company). Later, demands to fill out a USPS form we'd recently completed were made with no explanation as to why it had to be completed again.

This isn’t just bad customer service — it smacks of operational negligence. The location now is run by people with neither the authority nor the inclination to fix anything, and who take pleasure in frustrating the company’s clients. To make matters worse, the location is overseen by a corporate structure so decentralized that promptly solving even the simplest issue requires escalation to the highest levels of IWG.

After six years of loyalty, in my experience this location is no longer a viable option for any serious business. You can expect to manage Spaces' staff on your own, and use more time and resources than their services save. If your company depends on timely and transparent communication, competent administration, trustworthiness, or basic accountability, you’re better off—and will pay less—elsewhere.

Edit 11/19/25 in response to Lorraine's mistruths below:
Hi Lorraine,

The facts are as I have outlined them, and your doubling down on the absolute horrid customer service I have received over the course of this wholly unnecessary saga only makes crystal clear the wisdom of my conclusion that this location—and your company—are not suitable for any business customer.

The service suspension you speak of was a result of Spaces incorrectly applying a $49.78 payment to another of our accounts, creating a credit that was never applied to our Virtual Office account. No one in Regus/IWG customer service was able to tell us this, of course, though there were plenty of autogenerated threatening collection notices sent.

Nevertheless, IWG/Regus breached our agreement by suspending or terminating our service as of July 30 with no notice whatsoever. The supposed termination was only found when I began looking into why properly addressed mail—in this case identical to mail we’d received without incident for six years prior from the same source and delivered by the same contemptuous community associate—was inexplicably returned and used as the first of many disingenuous, illogical pretexts to obfuscate her incompetence.

With hopes of finding a reasonable resolution, I have thus far chosen not to pursue your clear breach of contract, nor your newly stated intent to not follow USPS regulations requiring delivery of mail by Commercial Mail Receiving Agencies for a six month period after termination.

I have written you privately regarding this matter. This is the first response I am receiving from you, in public, where your and your company’s disregard for your agreements and your bad faith operations can be on full display. And for that, I thank you.

Réponse de Spaces - 413 West 14th Street

Hi Mac,
I'm sorry you're disappointed, but I must address your comments as they don't reflect the facts.
Your centre team followed postal regulations, accepting USPS mail under an active agreement. As your account is inactive due to unpaid invoices since June 2025, only USPS mail is accepted for six months post-expiry. Other couriers are not handled, and they will be returned to sender until the agreement is fully reinstated.
A further reason some of your mail was returned to sender is that it was addressed to a company name not registered with us. By law, we are not permitted to accept post for any business not linked to an active agreement.
A member of my team has already contacted you to support you and ensure a complete resolution.
Best,
Lorraine Brule

Quiet and clean

I like to quiet, clean space and the atmosphere of professionalism.

I don't like that in the early months of winter 2023 I was invariably cold (heat not working) and that throughout my one year here there have been issues with overhead lighting: doesn't turn on. I have had multiple visits from heating and lighting people to fix these problems.
