Horrible Experience – Racism at Deep Africa Boutique
During my recent visit to Nungwi Beach, I had one of the most disappointing and offensive experiences at Deep Africa Boutique. My wife, sister, female cousin, and a close family friend—all women of color—were with me as we walked by this shop. Curious to see what souvenirs they offered so we could purchase something meaningful to bring back home to the USA, we approached the entrance.
Before we could even step inside, the owner (who appeared to be of Russian descent) abruptly locked the door and flipped the sign from “Open” to “Closed.” This was not only shocking but deeply insulting. It was painfully clear that we were being stereotyped and discriminated against solely because of the color of our skin.
It is extremely disheartening to face such racism, especially in a predominantly Black country where one would expect respect and inclusivity. To be treated in such a demeaning manner, as if we were not worthy of entering the store, was both humiliating and unacceptable.
I strongly caution anyone—especially Black travelers and people of color—against supporting this establishment in any way. Businesses that operate with such prejudice do not deserve to thrive, and they certainly do not reflect the warmth, hospitality, and beauty of Zanzibar.
The best way to respond to such behavior is by spreading awareness. I will continue to share this experience to ensure others know the type of treatment they might face at Deep Africa Boutique. Discrimination has no place anywhere, and certainly not in a country as rich in culture and diversity as Tanzania.
