ChatterBug is a social enterprise dedicated to helping children develop their communication skills. We continuously seek ways in which we can make a difference to the lives of those with Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN). Communication is central to all that we do and those who struggle with poor communication skills at a young age are at risk of underachieving and experiencing poor mental health/well-being.

Placement experience
I am a final year SLT student from Birmingham City University and was lucky enough to have my final placement with Chatterbug working with Siobhain O’Connor and Anne-Marie Owen. I couldn’t speak more highly of 2 therapists, they were incredibly welcoming and so knowledgeable. I learnt so much from them over my 12 week placement and will be forever grateful for their guidance. From my second week of placement I was given countless opportunities to act independently and build my confidence. Siobhain and Anne-Marie were always available to help me with any issues that I had. They provided me with a safe environment to develop my professional skills and get an experience of what it’s like to be a newly qualified therapist.
Everyone that works at Cahtterbug cares about the young people, it’s an incredible service. Every member of staff I spoke to was helpful and welcoming. Chatterbug are an incredible placement provider and anyone who works with them will have incredible opportunities to develop their professional skills.

Taking the first steps- kind and professional
When you have a concern about a child it’s so difficult to work out how best to proceed. I googled and found Chatterbox and was impressed with their approach. I rang and spoke to Kathryn who took me through the process and I felt she’d really listened to the concerns for my grandson. It isn’t always easy to articulate worries you have but she understood. There was a relief at having someone on the end of the phone who was kind, personable and able to explain how Chatterbugs might be able to help. I didn’t feel rushed or that my daughter had to make any quick decisions.We now await the assessment and feel so much more positive about things to come. I think it’s going to be the best investment I’ve ever made (as a grandparent I’m paying -small price for a good start)!

Superb Speech and Language support
Chatterbug have supported children in our school with speech, language and communication difficulties for several years and we could not be happier with the service they provide. Tript Gill (our speech and language therapist) completes fortnightly sessions in school and she has always been professional, punctual and has created superb relationships with the children she supports in school. Although Tript is only in school once a fortnight, she is always contactable via phone or email and will always answer questions or give support. Whilst in school, Tript is incredibly efficient and we work together prior to all her days to agree on which children she will be working with – she simply does not waste a second! During the school closures during 2020 and 2021, Tript and her team have continued to offer telehealth sessions and these have been greatly received and appreciated by parents and school as the amazing progress the children had been making has been able to continue. As a school, we would all thoroughly recommend Chatterbug.

A Senco’s perspective
Kath is very efficient, organised and Knowledgeable. She has a large caseload but prioritises effectively. The work she undertakes with the children is enjoyable and purposeful and it is evident that children are making progress. Reports are detailed and clear for staff to understand their next steps to support children.
Kath works in collaboration with myself and keeps me up-to-date with how each young person is progressing. She effectively manages Louise, our CALS who works with groups of children in school fortnightly. These sessions run smoothly and are well planned.

Speech Therapy Review
We booked a block of 6 sessions with Siobhain O'Connor for our 3 year old son, Siobhain was brilliant and managed to interact really well with our son each week which is not easy over conference calls! She was able to encourage our son to engage throughout the sessions and he was excited for the call each week. My husband and I really benefited from the sessions too, Siobhain introduced us to 'bus stop' and 'slow/fast' talking which we have continued to encourage with our son. We feel our son has improved massively with his speech and would like to thank Siobhian for her help over the 6 weeks.

ChatterBug - a superb service
ChatterBug have provided us with a fantastic and consistent service since 2018. We have had the same speech and language therapist during this time enabling us to develop a good working relationship with them and ensuring they get to know our children well. During school closure due to COVID, they have continued to provide telehealth sessions for our children, enabling home and school to work together in order to ensure the best outcomes for our children. I would thoroughly recommend ChatterBug.

Our CaLS Rebecca is such an asset to our school. Rebecca takes the time to get to know our children and makes her sessions exciting and very current. The children can not wait for their bespoke session.

West Cliff - Rebecca Thompson
We currently have the pleasure of Rebecca Thompson coming into West Cliff Primary school to deliver our face to face sessions and facilitate reviews done by the speech therapist. The children all really enjoy their sessions and from the ones I have observed Rebecca engages brilliantly with them, finding that balance of getting to know them, listen to their news and interest and delivering a well planned and paced intervention. She is always punctual and is incredibly hard working. Her communication with myself (the SENCo) to arrange days, appointments is always done well before time and is very clear it who she needs... I also get regular updates on all the children she is working with either face to face or via e mail and am alerted to when things have been added to the Google Drive. There are always clear plans and things children can be working on between sessions. Parental consent is always sought and checked and the virtual sessions for those families who chose to engage in lockdown were delivered well. There is a clear understanding of the children’s specific needs and how they should be addressed. Working with a Rebecca and Chatterbugs is a great and impactful experience for our children and families. Many thanks, Hazel Taylor SENCo

Great intervention
Great that this intervention could continue with children remotely. Children enjoyed the sessions and had time to practise speaking in full sentences with the colourful semantics.
Great relationships with the children and accommodating for different times to suit class timetable.

Great remote service offer
We were really pleased that our son was able to continue his speech and language therapy at home via video when schools closed in January. Naturally, having sessions via video call presents challenges for a 4 year old but I was really impressed with the resources and tactics used to keep him engaged for the full half hour sessions. He said he particularly enjoyed "playing snakes and ladders" and would look forward to this each week. Our speech therapist, Charlotte, clearly knows our son and his needs well and understands how to get the best out of him. She often referred back to things he had mentioned in the weeks before, or things that happened during sessions at school, which I feel has helped to build up his relationship with her so he can get the most from his sessions. He often looks forward to updating her on what he has been up to since the previous session. Despite not being able to have face to face sessions, we have continued to see progress and look forward to sessions continuing once he's back to school.

Excellent experience
We use chatterbugs as our traded service and our SALT Charlotte has been superb. She has an excellent rapport with the children and has provided excellent support over lockdwon.

We had his first speech therapy…
We had his first speech therapy appointment with @chatterbug_slt last week. This was done via zoom, a lovely lady asked us lots of questions and attempted to get Archie to do a few simple tests, which I knew wouldn’t work as he just doesn’t concentrate. BUT, Sod’s law, she shouted him and waved hello and he only went and bloody waved back! This is something so simple that he just doesn’t do! I was so happy. We’re now waiting for his pack to come from chatterbugs so we can start working with him and hopefully at his reassessment in a few months time he’ll have come on a lot more
