Trust the Process - You Will NOT Be Disappointed
I have had the pleasure of working with Richard for a number of years now and I’d like to think I am one of his strongest advocates.
Under Richard’s guidance I have been transformed from a keen “plodder” to being able to hold my own with 2nd Cat (sometimes 1st) racers, National Masters / Vets champions, recently retired pros, even World Class age-group podiums.
I originally asked Richard to get me into shape “not to embarrass myself” in a grippy “competitive” UCI Gran Fondo here in the UK and since then have completed Mallorca 312 in 11 hours (moving time), multiple very spicy extreme distance amateur jaunts, a near-Elite-level weekly training thrash, and achieved countless goals, target race times etc
It’s all about the process; working with Richard to set the right goals which are meaningful to me, and then trusting him to build an Annual Training Plan which is then broken down into phases, then monthly schedules built up with phase and goal specific workouts.
Most of the time it hurts - a lot … (especially “Test Week”) but if you commit to the process (and I mean TRULY commit) then the hard work pays dividends.
I’m living proof. Those who knew me on the bike before Richard can barely reconcile with how I have transformed under Richard’s truly expert guidance and coaching.
At one point I foolishly took a break from Richard’s direct coaching, foolishly thinking I could emulate what I had learned from being directly coached. I simply plateaued and/or fell away over the year.
Suffice to say I saw the error of my ways and reverted to my direct relationship.
Richard’s process is very data-driven but it works. You can absolutely geek out on the data and Richard’s analysis of that’s your “thing” but if not … no worries - you’ll see the same results regardless.
A couple of Richard’s MANY attributes are patience and flexibility - adapting my training schedule (often at almost no notice) to accommodate the chaos of modern life.
Such is the trust, belief and working relationship I built up with Richard that a few years ago I asked him to turn his attention to my-then teenage son who is a fanatical cyclist and aspiring racer but who has some very complex needs, an intellectual disability and Type 1 Diabetes.
And yet even more so … I invited Richard to co-found a racing club for elite racers with intellectual impairments, accredited with Special Olympics GB.
This is probably the greatest expression of how I feel about Richard, his coaching and what has become a friendship.
