My experience was fantastic. Would recommend healthcare abroad to everyone I know?
Absolutely incredible experience from start to finish. My initial contact was Chris, who helped out with surgery for my dad after which I decided to ask about my own issues that I had been dealing with. Needless to say, every single person that I’ve dealt with since contacting them, for my case and for my dad’s, have been incredibly helpful and kind and so straight forward. I’ve never felt more looked after and in good hands. Meeting Laura at the clinic in Madrid has been so good and reassuring as she’s the kindest sweetest person and makes you feel so at ease with the whole process.

I heard about healthcare abroad from a friend who had had a great experience with them . I was in extreme pain with my hip which was really affecting my day to day life and had been told I would have to wait 12 months. Because of this I decided to give them a call, Healthcare abroad were amazing from start to finish. They explained everything and do all the paperwork for you including helping with getting a credit union loan which you get back from the HSE. The service I received in Valencia was first class, you are picked up from the airport and taken to your hotel as well as being taken to and from the hospital. I had a full hip replacement which went amazingly well and my recovery after was fantastic. One of the main reasons I feel that the recovery went so well was, that included in the package was a week of physiotherapy sessions at the same hospital which was brilliant . Another nice part of the experience was that there were other Irish people who were also having operations and staying in the same hotel along with our partners. It was great to be able to support each other and have great craic each evening.

We recently spent 12 nights in Spain in Denia for a decompression back surgery with Dr. Saab, organised through Healthcare Abroad, and the whole experience was exceptional from start to finish.
From the very beginning, the support was incredible. All the paperwork and organisation was handled for us, which took so much stress away. Communication was brilliant too. We had regular phone calls, emails, and every question we had was answered quickly. What I really appreciated was that we were always speaking to real people who genuinely cared, not automated responses.
From the moment we landed, everything was taken care of. We were collected at the airport, all transport between the hotel and hospital was organised, and we stayed in a beautiful hotel with great food.
The care, professionalism and kindness we experienced made what could have been a stressful time feel very supported and smooth. I would highly recommend Healthcare Abroad to anyone considering treatment overseas.

So many pros: The whole process was fast - time of contact to the time of flying out was 6 weeks. When you arrive you are picked up from the airport by kind drivers who will be escorting you to and from hospital all week. It really feels like you just give your trust to the Healthcare Abroad workers and hope for the best (and you do get the best!).
The HA staff are the nicest, most down to earth, lovely people. We were unstandably nervous arriving - I was getting Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Spinal Fusion - so for the first few days I was very quiet, but everyone did their best to put us at ease. It's really well organised. You receive texts with your upcoming appointments, and all you do is turn up in the hotel lobby. The drivers have your details and are ready for you, directing you straight to where you need to be. They take all the scariness away for you which is so appreciated in the moment.
On the day of surgery, there was a few of us going in together. The staff are calm and helpful and spirits were kept high. I will always appreciate the hug from Joe when he was leaving me up to my hospital room. I was about to be alone, waiting to be wheeled straight to surgery and scared out of my mind, but that hug just made me feel so much less alone, so thank you Joe! You were so lovely.
The doctors are easy to talk to, kind and understanding. The service overall is great as I also needed help with a shoulder injury so was sent for that consultation too.
Separate amenities:
The hospital room is fantastic and spacious and full of light, with blackout blinds. The consultant visits each day to check in and the nurses, cleaning team and catering are all very lovely.
The hotel room for us was an apartment (without kitchen facilities) and was HUGE as we had one kid with us and wanted space, and comfort as he is autistic. It was a really affordable €1400 for 13 nights (you pay this yourself along with flights, all medical procedures are paid in advance but later refunded by HSE).
The lovely other Irish patients were amazing and the chats, check ins and kindness were so helpful as you never feel alone. Especially another patient who got the same surgery as me the week before and she and her husband came to visit me. It was such a gorgeous thing to do and felt really special when I felt so far away from loved ones! (Hopefully you read this D and L!).
Two small cons: There are so many pros to outnumber these cons, but they are just some things that stuck out for me -
There is a different person for each part of the process, which works brilliantly for Healthcare Abroad and makes their process seamless and efficient, but, as a patient it felt like there was no one person to ring if I wanted to check in or see where the process was at or what I needed. I was getting very nervous about when to book flights and couldn't book them until 6 days before, but in order to get updates I was ringing the main number and waiting for call backs which didn't always come. I think patient liaisons would be a great idea to bridge this gap. Someone who is given a certain number of case files (patients) and liaises with all of the staff at each step and gives an update every few days and instructions on what is next for the patient. Whenever I rang I needed to give the same info over and over to see when I could book flights and it took a while. Also, nobody answers the emails. I sent a couple and never got replies. I would follow with a call a day or two later, which always was answered, but no sense having email contact and then never answering them.
This is not a complaint, merely observation, as I still got there in the end and had a great customer service experience, but there was maybe two weeks in this whole process that I hadn't a clue what was happening and was worried and getting a bit fed up with talking to so many different people.
The second con is the lack of care when you get home. This is probably something to tackle with the HSE, but coming home from major spinal surgery and just left to it is very scary. You are encouraged to visit your GP but the GP can't do much, only try get you into a system that has already made you wait an indeterminate amount of time for a consultation. If there was some set up of a clinic specifically for patients using these services who could then get the 6 week or 3 month check ups they needed after, it would give such peace of mind.
Overall, as I've said, my experience was professional, kind, warm and fantastic staff and service, and I wouldn't let the small cons put you off. It's still 100 times better than waiting years and years in pain on the Irish system. If you are going to have a similar spinal surgery, it is scary, it's tough going, but it's worth it! If you need anything or to ask questions about this surgery, you can contact me on ciarasophiamorgan@gmail (not allowed add full emails 😁)

I submitted a request for more information a month ago and was advised I would be called back in a few days. I never was contacted back and waited many weeks. Really poor service so far, if they are busy they should at least give a quick call to introduce and book the appointment for a later time.

A great stress free experience from start to finish. Health care staff on hand at each stage to guide you. Hotel lovely and drivers so helpful. Operation organised within 2 weeks of initial phonecall which was amazing- as self employed could not afford to wait on a list for an Irish hospital. 5 * service

I really couldn’t recommend Healthcare Abroad enough! From the first phone call, to actually getting to Madrid, the whole process was seamless.
We were collected from the airport and dropped off to all of my appointments by Javier who was so welcoming, friendly and helpful. When we got to the Lyx hospital, we met Laura and she helped in every way she could, answering questions, organising paperwork, being involved in the appointments. Laura is up for the craic which took away a lot of the nerves but she was also so caring. My surgeon Dr Lucas Minig was so kind and made us feel at ease with any questions we had. Dr Minig and his team were extremely professional and I’m so grateful to him. Thank you so much Javier, Laura and Dr Minig.
Myself and my partner were actually shocked at how easy and quick the whole process was and we will be recommending Heathcare Abroad to everyone. I’m excited for the future now and to finally get my life back.

I travelled to Denia early February to have my gallbladder removed. I was nervous as I was feeling unwell and was anxious about having surgery abroad. However, the whole process was seamless, professional and reassuring. Each Healthcare Abroad staff member I met was so helpful, (shout out of Joe from Cork!), the hospital staff and my surgeon Dr. Antonio Alberola were extremely competent and kind. The hotel was great and it was lovely to meet other Irish people. You're never alone even if you travel by yourself. My surgery went very well and I've made a full recovery. I am very happy to recommend Healthcare Abroad, they will look after you right from the first phone call and all the way through the process. Thankyou!

Four weeks ago, I travelled to Spain for a three-level cervical surgery and I can honestly say the entire experience has been nothing short of exceptional.
From the very first contact, Healthcare Abroad handled every single detail with remarkable care and professionalism. Travelling abroad for major spinal surgery is a huge decision ~ yet their organisation, constant communication, and attention to even the smallest details made the entire journey seamless and reassuring. I felt supported every step of the way.
My surgeon, Anwar Saab, was outstanding. From our first consultation, his calm manner, expertise, and willingness to answer every question gave me complete confidence. Undergoing a three-level cervical procedure is daunting but I knew I was in the safest and most skilled hands.
The team at HCB Denia were equally impressive. The hospital itself is excellent, and the nursing and support staff were compassionate, attentive and highly professional throughout my stay. Nothing was too much trouble and I was treated with genuine kindness and dignity at all times.
Now, four weeks post-surgery, I am recovering well and feeling incredibly grateful. This has truly been an unbelievable experience, and I cannot thank Healthcare Abroad, Mr Saab and the entire team at HCB Denia enough for their skill, dedication, and exceptional care.
I would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone considering treatment abroad.

The support and contact from the Irish team was outstanding from day one. Everything was quick and easy to arrange. Hotel transfers to and from the airport and clinic were organised by our clinic coordinator Luisana, who is an absolute diamond. Everything was smooth and seamless. The clinic team in Barcelona were superb, put me at ease from the moment I met them. Dr Gomez is a fantastic surgeon, warm and welcoming, and a master at his craft, I knew I was in safe hands from the moment I met him. The IM clinic is beautiful and modern. It's extremely clean with a highly trained team of wonderful nurses. The hotel Park Sedo was perfect for my needs and all the employees were friendly and helpful with the manager making a point to say to ask for any assistance if needed. I cannot fault my care and treatment I'm Barcelona, it was top notch from start to finish. Thank you all so much, with a special mention to Luisana and Dr Gomez, everything you've done has been so much appreciated.

The professional care that I received from all the Healthcare abroad Team from the minute we arrived at the airport until we were dropped off again was second to none. Indeed from the initial first contact made, there was always someone on the other side of the phone to answer any questions and alleviate any fears.

I have been on a waiting list to see a consultant in Ireland since March 2025. Scan showed a torn meniscus and possible flap in my right knee and the pain was horrendous.
I met with Debbie and Paul from Health Care Abroad at the end of November and was so impressed with their kindness that I decided to go to Spain for treatment.
I was nervous about the surgery and the travel but the whole experience far exceeded my expectations.
Joe, Tony, Katerina and all of the staff were absolutely amazing. The hospital in Denia is first class and all of the staff were so kind and professional. Dr Sentra Miralles was my surgeon, he is a lovely man and explained everything in great detail, I needed a total knee replacement which was done two days later. Followed by ten sessions of physio. The empathy and support that I received from the HCA staff went above and beyond my expectations, their kindness, sense of humour and willingness to help from start to finish was exceptional.
I would highly recommend HCA to anyone who is in pain and awaiting an appointment here, I should have gone sooner and not spent last summer in constant pain.

Our youngest daughter suffers with endometriosis and finds it hard to get through a week pain free. The last few months have been a real struggle for her - so much so that she deteriorated greatly. Her doctor recommended HCA she said she had heard reports. Health Care Abroad currently send a group of women to Madrid once a month for surgery. The surgeons are experts in the field of endometriosis and have a proven success rate in removing the disease - allowing women to gain back their lives pain free, or near enough to it.HSE will cover the cost of the surgery through the EU healthcare directive. You pay for the surgery up front and it will be refunded within 16 weeks to 6 months. Your local credit union also have a loan system in place to help with the cost.
The cost to the patient is flights and accommodation.
The whole process is seamless and there is an English-speaking employee from Health Care Abroad with you every step of the way and a driver to take you to and from the hospital for appointments. I realise it’s stressful at the best of times having an operation - never mind an operation abroad - but I would totally recommend it. Because endometriosis steals so much from women - time, energy, confidence, and quality of life - and too many families feel stuck.
If you’re in Ireland and you’re feeling out of options, I want you to know there may be another route, and in our experience it was supported, professional, and genuinely seamless.
For now, we’re taking recovery day by day - grateful, hopeful, and looking forward to the life she gets to rebuild.
