We provide weekly group mental health support sessions inside of video games to address issues of depression, anxiety, addiction, identity, trauma, neurodivergence, stress, gender/sexuality, relationships, loneliness, etc. Small groups of 5 gamers pseudonymously meet weekly for 80 mins, led by trained facilitators (PsyD, LMFT, LCSW, and LMHC clinicians) with expertise in evidence-based group psychotherapy.

This is a great substitute for in-person group therapy. The company does a good job of matching you up to a group that will fit your needs, and the group leaders are very helpful. This is my second time signing up for HJC. I think it says something that, after a year off, when I started feeling down again, my first thought was that I needed to sign back up for HJC.

I enjoy gaming alot and adding gaming to therapy makes it feel so much less scary for me. I also love having group therapy v.s individual therapy because I feel less pressure and more connected to others. its only been 5 sessions but HJC has helped so much in short period of time. Shout out to Kahlia!

Changed my life

I am a Veteran, I joined while I was still in the Army. Before I had joined I was super lost and didn't really have anyone or anything like that. I was stationed somewhere dark all the time and you couldn't really get out at all. I was having anxiety attacks every week and was always on the verge of giving up.
I signed up for this program and was met with an incredibly supportive group, who have become lifelong friends, one of them I have moved in with since I got out of the Army, and now we intend to eventually get married. She's the love of my life, and I never would have met her without this program.

Product was an amazing therapist, who gave me the tools I needed to become the person I am proud to be. For the first time, in a long time, I feel emotionally stable, like I can get through life. I feel proud to be who I am, and I have amazing people with me now who I never thought I'd meet.

The journey is different for everyone, but I can tell you it truly changed my life forever. And I'm happy with it.

Missing therapy and social skills building

Signed my son up for this program and I really don't understand how this would build social skills. You’re paying $30 a week for them to sit at a computer and play a game online together with almost no socializing. This is already for free without Teen Journey. There were no productive conversation, activities or social building skill exercises of any sort at all. Save your money!

The bar was on the floor and they still went under it

The Basics:

It wasn't horrible but I don't really recommend it hence the 1 star. I did it for, I believe, a few months. I didn’t really get anything out of it.

We never actually played any games as "everyone had to agree" despite the fact I ONLY selected minecraft when I signed up. (Actually we did hop on minecraft a total of one times, I talk about it below)

The Games:

The only game we played was a coloring game on discord that was literally just color by number and wasn't any fun.

They don't make realms for each group, so instead its a large server for every single person who paid for Herojourneyclub

It makes it much harder to just play with the group because so much has already been done on the world and you have to travel extremely far to start fresh. It wasn't at all the experience I was really hoping for/expecting.

The "Therapy":

This isn't therapy and they state this themselves. They do have a person who moderates the sessions and the person I had I really enjoyed. However a little more than 2 months in they were abruptly swapped out for another person whom I was extremely uncomfortable with and I even remember writing in a complaint about it. Shortly after I ended up leaving.

The Payment:

Payment is 30$ a week for an 80 minute session once a week. They will not give you a receipt. No matter who I asked or where I looked they would not provide one.

The Conclusion:

I'm only writing this review now because I continue to get their Ads on facebook and each ad has become increasingly annoying, misleading, and honestly have become more and more reminiscent of scam type ads in style.

Money is better spent on a real therapist and a minecraft server hosting site/realm.

I love HJC!

I’m a 28 year old woman who has struggled with mental health for as long as I can remember. I’ve been a HJC member since 2023 and been a part of 2 groups. It’s great for peer support; I really feel connected to the journey guides and other journeyers. Highly recommended!

wish more people knew about hjc!

i really like my guide but i wish my group members were more talkative with one another especially in the chat. love the sense of community and i’ve definitely felt less lonely.

I have had consistent bad interactions…

I have had consistent bad interactions with the staff of this service and it's shocking how rude they are when you're just trying to pause a transaction. It's almost as if they would rather just charge you and you not show up, it's gross.

Every single time I was able to inform them above 48 hours I still get charged or just a half credit despite being ahead of the 48 hour notice. This time was serious as I needed that money for medical bills and they still charged me and when I told them of this they suggested that I quit hero journey instead of trying to fix my issue.

They're starting to make me believe that this is some kind of scam, I'm very disappointed in the lack of customer service.

I am enjoying the weekly group…

I am enjoying the weekly group counseling sessions with my therapist and people. I love how we are open due to not having to worry about how we look or body language, or even provide your name. You can be as private or as open as you like. I have social and performance anxiety so I do enjoy the anonymity as it makes me feel more safe and comfortable to be myself.

Great Therapy Option!

I'm really enjoying being part of the Hero Journey club. My journey leader is great with making sure that everyone feels heard, and always gives us some great things to think about.

Always triggered

So, several members of the last group I was in mentioned being in relationships, which is an instant trigger for me to engage in destructive habits. Had I presented this, they likely would have either kept moving me to different groups, or I would have been politely told to leave and consider more intensive therapy.

Customer service is non-existing and…

Customer service is non-existing and when you get somebody on an email or a chat They're copying information from a textbook and sending to you instead of explaining simple things. You have to be signed in on both as an example. What ? both ? first you have a long explanation how you can use different devices and as a parent you probably going to be on your device and monitoring and your child will be on another device. They never explain that they want you to be on the website and on the app at the same time, normally if you use a phone that can be tricky. Especially if you have to go back and forth to find the different step and follow directions. Don't bother it's not worth the money. When they set up a decent customer service for technology and alphabet like myself. I actually prefer people using the English language and explaining like an instruction what to do and where to go next. They don't seem to have this gift. We missed a whole first session play time. And the look of it we're probably going to miss the rest too. They don't tell you that the app cost money they don't tell you that there is an app nowhere do they tell you there is an app and use the word app from the App Store. Minecraft is not as simple as it looks it's a lot of Hoops to jump through to get to the right place. When you finally do you need a code, guess what Minecraft doesn't send you the code. What are you going to do then so you ask what am I going to do I need a code. And the answer was we get back to you early next week. Today is Tuesday. I do not recommend this company. 😐
What kind of answer is that we get back to you someone will get back to you early next week. That's some strong customer service right there.

Guides my great groups!

The guide for my journey group is really amazing and thoughtful in how they facilitate discussion and offers support for the things we're going through. While not therapy, it certainly feels like a great addition to maintaining my mental health in a positive gaming centric space.

No Compatible Groups

I couldn't find a compatible group, nobody played the same games, and I constantly felt left behind by the group shuffling. Then I'd end up alone and without interaction. My experience felt like wasted time, in the end.
