Precise editorial work. Legally sophisticated review process. The manuscript was improved substantively without compromising its analytical integrity. The book reached the audiences it was written for. A professional engagement conducted to an appropriate standard throughout.

My mother called me crying after she read it. Said she finally understood me. We have not always found it easy to understand each other. The book did in two hundred pages what thirty years of conversation had not quite managed. I did not write it for her but it found her anyway and found the thing between us that needed finding. No publishing team can take credit for that. But they put the book in her hands and that is enough. That is everything.

Originally wrote the book in Farsi and translated it into English myself over two years. The linguistic negotiation between the two versions taught me things about both languages I hadn't known before. The editorial team worked with the English translation respectfully and only touched what genuinely needed touching. The voice survived the crossing intact which was always the most important thing.

Book came out eight weeks ago and I still wake up some mornings not quite believing it is real. Check the online listings just to confirm it exists. It always does. It is always there. The team made something permanent happen and permanent things take a while to feel completely real. Give it time apparently.

Managing thirty two contributing authors while also working with a publisher simultaneously is exactly as chaotic as it sounds. The coordination support from their team kept everything from completely unraveling. Several contributors have since told me it was the smoothest anthology process they've been part of. I'll take that.

My life has been genuinely chaotic and funny in equal measure and I wrote about all of it. The editor laughed in the right places which sounds like a low bar but it really isn't. She also told me when something wasn't as funny as I thought it was which took courage on her part. The final book is tighter and funnier for it. Uncomfortable feedback is a gift.

True crime is a genre people have strong feelings about and I wanted to make sure the book handled its real subjects with dignity. The ethics conversations I had with my editor were some of the most thoughtful I've encountered in any professional setting.

The editing was great. The cover was great. The communication was not great. Spent more time chasing updates than I'd like to admit. End product was worth it but the anxiety in between wasn't necessary. Sort your response times out and this is easily a five star operation.
