Title: Paid for developmental editing, got mostly line edits, plus a copyright upsell and a $625 demand: EDIT Update as of 10/27
I signed a $2,500 Service Agreement with The Publishing Legend on September 10, 2026 and paid the first $625 installment. The charge appeared under the name Legends Horizon LLC. The contract says the work "will begin with developmental and structural review," including pacing, continuity, character and world-building. What I received were mostly line-level edits to the opening chapters. On October 2 I asked in writing when the structural feedback was coming. I got no answer before I ended the agreement in writing on October 5, as the contract allows. Their reply the next day promised a developmental assessment "soon," and revised draft files dated October 6 arrived after my notice.
The copyright pitch bothered me most. On October 2 I was sent a two-option offer: a $65 standard filing, or a $999 "Special Handling" package that they called their "honest recommendation." I chose the $65 option because it was the only one viable for me. Instead of leaving it there, I was told they would see about an "author discount program" that could cut the cost by around 50%. If that discount applied to the $999 package, it would come to about $500, less than the $800 the Copyright Office charges for special handling alone. To me, a price that can suddenly drop by half after you say no looks like an opening number, not a real price. A later email from the company apologized for "any concern the pricing discussion caused." I filed my copyright directly with the Copyright Office myself.
For any future author considering this: the Copyright Office's published special handling fee is $800 per claim, on top of the regular filing fee, and its fee schedule lists no discounts. Check copyright.gov before you pay anyone for it.
After my notice, I was called on the phone even though I had asked for email only. On October 12 the company refused any refund, said I owed another $625 even though the contract sets no payment dates, and said my files would be released only after I paid. The contract says that on termination I "will receive completed and fully paid materials." I disputed the charge with my bank.
Update, October 28: in an October 27 email, the company withdrew its $625 claim in writing, confirmed that no further payment will be asked, and offered to complete the work, plus a cover design, within what I've already paid. I accepted, and we are continuing the work. I'll update this review again once I've received the deliverables. The pricing and copyright details above are unchanged.
I appreciate the effort to resolve this
Everything above is in the signed agreement, my payment receipt and the email record, and I can provide it to Trustpilot.
