Excessive fines on the Nottingham Tram

First time visiting Nottingham and we got a £140 fine on the tram. Most other tram companies have the facility to pay on board but you can’t in Nottingham, we tried using their appeals system explaining where we got on and the lack of signage telling us we had to pay before boarding but the appeals system is terrible.

Late and overcrowded. Do not use for work

In the last week the trams have been late and overcrowded three times out of my 4 journeys to work to QMC. It’s becoming unfit for purpose at this point. Dangerously overcrowded in the mornings and evenings when most people are going to work to the point where you physically can’t board the tram and have to wait sometimes another two trams. They need more trams on route or they need ticket inspectors on each tram to deter free riders from over crowding.

A masterclass in systemic failure

A masterclass in systemic failure. They’ve managed to achieve the impossible: charging higher rates than functional metropolitan networks while maintaining the reliability of a scrap yard. Calling this a 'service' is a massive overstatement.

Absolutely useless service

Absolutely useless service. Expensive and unreliable. There are no ticket checkers in my area all year long. The sign will be showing nonsense like 21 minutes so you call uber while you pay a yearly pass to these jokers just to see the tram coming along with your uber.

ripoff merchants

So many inspectors, had a £800 fine that escalated from them when I appealed and had a ticket in the first place it just wasn't loading, which I explained. God awful inhumane service with ripoff prices, never any seats, always delayed and they often break down with you on them- I've been late to college many times because they've crashed into someone or delayed etc.

Embarrassing experience from using the tram

Had the most embarrassing experience from using the tram on the 23rd May 2025. I validated my contactless card at The Forest tram stop and boarded the tram there with my 1yr old child and my groceries. After settling on the tram, the ticketing inspector used the machine to check my card then advised me it was not validated. I was a bit taken a back because I know I touched the green machine with it and heard the "ping" noise which is an indication it has been accepted and I did have cash on the card, I also checked that. The 2 inspectors asked me to come off the tram at Noel Street and one explained that I was about to be issued a ticket of £70 because I did not validate my card, I explained to him I did and of course I understand that they cannot take my word for it but there is CCTV there that could collaborate what I said. While the ticket was being issued, my son became fussy so I took him out of the pram, and the pram fell over, I had groceries as I mentioned, the both officers stood there one was doing nothing but standing, over looking and offered no help, they both looked at me struggle with the bags the pram and the my child in my arms. A passerby saw what happened and ran to my assistance, just commmon human decency there was none of, cold and curt even when I cooperated. I asked the officer if it was possible for him to speed the process up, I mean read your situation a fussy child, not to mention the embarrassment of being treated like a criminal for an error which was not my fault. I moved into Nottingham almost 8 yrs ago, started as a student and have never boarded the tram without a ticket or validating my card. NEVER!!! I did not do it on this day. I was literally shaking and near tears. TheTram can you check or service your contactless machines at The Forest please???? Net Tram, maybe some re-training of your officers is needed? I have started the appeal process, but goodness, all that was needed was a bit of common human decency or maybe some empathy. Every situation is not the same and how you treat every situation or every customer should not be the same.

Used a tram from Nottingham to Phoenix…

Used a tram from Nottingham to Phoenix Park last night. Half way back we was told that we would have to get off at Highbury Vale because a problem with the line. It was 10.30pm, women on there own and in the middle of nowhere!! We ended up getting back onto the tram and going to Bulwell. Still didn't know where or how to get to the car at Phoenix Park! I managed to get an Uber after we had walked to the main road. The cost was £6.70. They will not refund the taxi fare and said they couldn't provide transport because of the time. Disgusting

I don’t usual use the tram but I had my car clamped because I parked on parent and child just after dropping my little one with my friend near the Wilkinson car park. I bought a ticket and went to work, on return around school run I found my car clamped the reason being that I parked on parent and child bay, When I called the lady who answered the phone was very rude and unprofessional when I tried to explain my situation, she didn’t listen all what she wanted was for me to make a payment. I had to call my friend to keep my baby I left the car and ran home to get my eldest child from school. I then got a call from someone saying he is the manager of the lady that I spoke with now demanding that I make a payment or else he will remove the car and I will incur extra charges. I felt robbed and disgusted because I paid for the tram and on the other hand I had to pay another £140 for the car and they also damaged my rim whe putting the clamp. I will never use the tram again they scammer working with Nottingham city council. I don’t recommend this service

A cold, ruthless, frustrating service and company.

The tram inspectors are completely unreasonable. I never fare dodge, but was fined £70 because I didn’t have the right student ID for my student single ticket, which has saved me a grand total of 60p. I had no idea they do not accept NUS cards and they make no effort to tell you that on their ticket machines or ticket app. I offered to buy a new ticket, but they would not let me & couldn’t wait to fine me. They said I could appeal but the appeals process is incredibly one sided & it would have been a waste of emotional and mental energy. The inspectors said they could tell I wasn’t trying to fare dodge - as I had paid for a ticket already - but tried to pretend they were hand tied to “follow the rules.” It’s absolutely disgraceful that this company relies on unfairly profiting off working, honest people, rather than taking any nuance into a situation and acting like NPC’s who can’t think for themselves.

Furthermore, the ticket prices are always inflating and the trams aren’t even reliable. On previous occasions I have paid for a day ticket on the app, only to reach Nottingham and find the services are reduced or not running where I need to get to - but they made no effort to notify me in the app, before taking my money.

Other times tram drivers will see you running to the ticket machine, but won’t give you chance to buy a ticket before shutting their doors.

NET is a cold, ruthless, robotic-like company and if you can, should be avoided. More often than not, you’ll have a far better experience and pay a better price on the bus.

Ignorant drivers

I love the way you signal to the driver you want to get on but have to run around to the platform on the other side, then as you get to the first door they pull off. This happens regularly

Despicable so called service

Despicable so called service. Used the wrong ID card which only saved me £1 and rather than a warning, they issued me with a £70 fine!!! They are doing nothing for encouraging people to use alternative transport into the city centre and punishing honest people. I'd sack the lot of them! They should get a real job where they actually contribute to society.

1 Star

**1 Star - Very Disappointing Service**

I am extremely frustrated with the response I received regarding the appeal for Penalty Fare Notice. The entire process has been nothing short of frustrating and unhelpful.

After submitting a detailed appeal, including all relevant information and context, the reply I received was nothing more than a simple, generic template that didn't address the specifics of our situation at all. It felt as though no actual consideration was given to the unique circumstances surrounding the case, and there was zero effort made to understand or resolve the issue.

Instead of offering a personalized or thoughtful response, the company chose to dismiss the appeal outright with a vague, automated-sounding reply, repeating the same points from their initial communication without any real engagement. This shows a complete lack of customer service or care for resolving issues on a case-by-case basis. It was clear that no one took the time to properly review the details or consider any mitigating factors, making this entire experience incredibly frustrating.

I would expect better service from a company that deals with customer-facing issues regularly. Instead of providing a solution or offering any meaningful support, I was met with a cold and impersonal response, which leaves me with no confidence in their ability to handle customer concerns properly.

Based on this experience, I would not recommend their services to anyone. Very poor customer service and no attempt to understand the situation.

£140 clamp after using them for years, NEVER AGAIN!!

Car park is clamping people. I used the train and tram and the car was left over night. Yes this breaks their rules but I didn't know it at the the time and no one constantly keeps re-reading terms and conditions. They also don't state this on the clamping sign in red they state it on the green posters. I made a mistake, I don't mind getting something like a £30 fine and them notifying me and I'd pay and then telling me if I do it again then I get clamped I can understand that. Nope I just got clamped by a private company which doesn't accept secure online payments, wants £140 and was told my car would be unclamped in 20 minutes turned out to be nearly an hour of my time sat in cold car park. To top it all off you have to pay but you cannot pay securely online, which means it's insecure and is all over the phone payment! Never use these people, they could change the terms and conditions at any moment, and BANG THERE'S A CLAMP, not even a reasonable process from these absolute cowboys. Don't forget the company running this shake down also shakes down the tax payer for the crap trams they always break down and never seem to work in winter. What a way to show people you actually care about people you bunch of cowboys! I'll travel different from now on!

Do not use the tram

Do not use the tram, the buses to & around Nottingham are cheaper and more comfortable. The company NETGO is despicable and way overcharges on its fare. Not only that, but the customer relations team are unprofessional and rude. I was a paying customer with a long history of paying for the tram and forgot to pay once exhausted after a long day at work, I got fined £70 but was told to appeal. I regret the wasted time/effort because all three appeals were rejected and support was rude and untimely.

This company will rob you.

This company is disgusting.
In the age of contactless there is no reason why ticket inspectors aboard the tram cannot supply tickets to those who mistakenly boarded without a ticket.
They are purely there to catch anyone who unknowingly boarded the tram to give them a huge fine. Like, that's their job, to fine people.
Avoid this service if you can. I know I will.
They put more effort into giving out fines than they do actually providing a good service. The trams are disgusting and often late, and the workers are rude.
Meanwhile go figure they have a whole convoluted system about appealing a fine that is incredibly one sided, making it basically impossible to appeal your huge fine. It shows where their priorities are. Piece of shit company run by scumbags. Clearly they saw an opportunity to extort from the public. How is this allowed? Why should we put up with this? It's so broken and nonsensical.
