Extremely Poor Customer Service

I have had a CD with Amerant for many years. They have locked me out of my online access and no one seems to be able to help. They tell me I must travel from North Carolina to Florida to physically go into a brick-and-mortar branch if I need help. I opened the account online, and now they refuse to help me unless in person. I must recommend that you steer clear of this bank.

Worse company I’ve ever dealt with!

This company has no desire to provide quality customer service. The mortgage number rings endlessly and if you happen to talk to someone they will claim to call you back but don’t not. I have spoken to so many people and finally had one who was being helpful but then he decided to stop taking my calls or calling me back. My loan was sold to this company. To stop auto pay I have to fill out a form but did not fill out a form for them to take out my payment. Very shady company. I wish homeowners had more say on who owns the mortgage. Please do not use this company! Save yourself the headache!

⭐ One Star – All Style, No Trust

Amerant Bank focuses heavily on image — sexy orange hues and flashy screens with lifestyle marketing — but behind the scenes their internal controls feel weak and unreliable.

I deposited $1,600 in cash at an Amerant ATM on a Friday afternoon. The money appeared, was transferred to their money market account, and then completely disappeared by Sunday morning — no deposit, no transfer, no record.

I had to go into the branch to get it resolved, and only then did the funds reappear. A bank should never be able to make a cash transaction vanish.

Nice branding doesn’t make up for fragile systems. I would not feel safe keeping money here.

No option to give ZERO star which is…

No option to give ZERO star which is what this bank deserves.
Customer service is absolutely horrible! They seem like they do not want to be there and work for free ...
Uncapable to put in the correct info, I had linked the wrong phone no for months , unable to access the on line banking because of that. I had to drive to the branch personally to have that fixed.
The transfer of funds take forever!!!! Over 10 days!
Do not bank with this !

Scam.
Will block you access to your account and not let you withdraw or transfer money for no reason.

Worst bank ever

Worst bank ever. For an international transfer had to made the transaction 3 times as, apparently, due internal issues, the transfer was cancelled

Amerant bank does not care for their customers

I opened my account from Venezuela originally in Mercantil Commerce Bank and automatically became a client of Amerant from few years now.

I have had the poorest banking experience from September 'till today as I tried to rely on their customer service by requesting physical reference letters to be sent abroad.

On September the 23rd (2024), I made the first attempt was to have it sent to Venezuela. It took me THREE attempts, 1 by secure messaging on online banking and 2 by talking with their staff on the phone.

The information was not alligned nor updated. My first request did not appeared on the system and therefor, due to their misshandling I had an about 10 days delay in my urgent errand. The first phone customer service agent had not done well the job either since I had to call again and have everything done from zero.

The reference letter finally was sent to Venezuela but the address was not correctly copied and ZOOM, the courier services they chose, had no way to deliver it.

So, I paid for a $25 fee of a premium service for nothing as I had to make time on my agenda and go myself in office hours to a Zoom office far from the place I was supposed to receive it. The reference letter was no longer of use since more than 10 days had passed since the issuing date.

Amerant Bank silentely reimbursed the $25 fee of international courier but no appologies were sent. The $40 fees of issuing a reference were clearly charged in my account despite it was not usefull by the time Zoom had finally given me the info to go and get it.

Had I known better Amerant Bank were no near interested in clear their bad reputation to me, I would have not requested once more a reference letter sent internationally.

On November the 21rst I made the request. EIGHT WORKING DAYS OF DELAY to attend a request sent through the online banking secure messaging services. Not even the slightest corporative remorse.

The $40 + $25 ha been charged for a "International Priority" courier finally sent on December the 3rd. They chose Fedex to deliver me the urgent and delicate content of the letter through a service that should have been delivered in 1-3 days according to Fedex's web page.

The logistics failed, waaaay to badly. The ID tracking number showed the letter had gotten to Madrid on the 6th. Today on the 12th, after several missleading and contradictory messages from Fedex, the courier was officiale sent back to their offices despite they didn't even ring my door. The funny thing is that the package appeared to have set off and come back in minutes to a place 60min far away from were I have been waiting it as a home-hostage.

Amerant Bank's customer service messages responding through online banking showed NO respect for the interests of me, their client. They did not even tried to do a follow up and claim Fedex for the unacceptable delays of such expensive service with a breach of contract that the client was charged for in advance.

Amerant just answered me yesterday the 11th, alleging that they sent the package on the 3rd and according to Fedex tracking web page, it was meant to be delivered yesterday, which was not.

So, reliable? Not at all, I have already started withdrawing my funds to another bank.

Difficult to get money back upon CD Maturity

Opened a CD and request to close upon maturity. They took months for processing just to get my money back! First they wanted me to provide banking info. Before getting my banking info, they auto-renew it and wanted to give me penalty even I told them I want to close the account upon maturity. Then, they ask me to sign a form. Then, they refuse to respond to my question and keep holding my money!!!!

Amerant: careless about customers. Trash service.

By far the worst experience with a home mortgage.

Applied for a mortgage with Amerant in Feb for a home purchase. They were given 30 days for closing, they knew the closing date way in advance. 2 weeks into contract and they were unreachable by phone and email. Finally 2 weeks before closing and they start asking for every document under the sun from bank statements to my W2 to rental agreements. All of which they already had from when I first applied.

Best part of the story - we had to delay closing THREE TIMES because Amerant kept putting additional conditions and delaying us the clear to close. Each time they asked for more documents the underwriter kept saying "will review and ok by tomorrow AM" and yet each time 2-3 days would pass before we heard back. Seller almost walked from the deal because of it. Ended up closing 3.5 weeks after initial closing date. Amerant had all the time in the world to ask me for docs from the start yet they chose to do everything last minute. And at a time when mortgage applications were at a 10 year low (2024) so not like they were swamped with work.

Icing on the cake - after closing and getting the mortgage secured, I had no idea who my loan officer was or how to pay my mortgage. All I had to go by was a phone number of the originator at Amerant whom I called and left voicemails every 2 days after closing. I was getting nervous after 2 weeks as the end of the month approached and my first mortgage payment was due, yet I still had no idea how to pay. Trying to setup the online portal on my own was fruitless and apparently my loan number didn't exist in their system. Started calling the corporate office in FL from their parent company website, got a nice lady in construction loans who tried for 3 hours to help me and also could not find me in the system nor get a hold of their own home mortgage department in their own company.

At this point I was afraid Amerant was not even a real business but some shell corporation with a fake post office box address and fake phone numbers.

Finally 2 days before my first bill I got a letter in the mail (at my old address and not at my new home) stating that my loan was sold to Pennymac and I will be paying them going forward.

Avoid these guys at all cost. Terrible customer experience, terrible customer service, and harder to get someone on the phone than the president.

0 Star my account was opened from Venezuela as Mercantil Commercebank but since it turns into Amerant the service has been poor. My account was closed due to issues with admin in my business in Venezuela so its been 3 years I'm still waiting to get my money released 😔😡

0 Star for this bank, a bank to be avoided at all costs.

My opinion of Amerant is the worst that a client can have of a bank, I feel scammed, defrauded and I feel that the only thing I am good for is for the bank to take money from me without my consent, I made a claim which has not been attended to not even answered, that shows the total lack of seriousness, in the end I had to close the account because they continued to take money from me monthly without my consent, avoid it at all costs.

please NEVER consider opening an account at this bank, they first started with a partnership in Venezuela as Mercantil commerce bank, then it changed to AMERANT, its disgusting how they treat you there, just branches in Florida and completely impossible to solve a problem if you're not there, with plenty of options in the US, why even consider this as a bank? Just don't. their employees aren't trained enough to solve a problem, and they work as if they were in Venezuela, asking for useless paperwork in order to solve a very simple task, I already filled a claim, and will close this account as soon as I travel to Florida.

Untrustworthy Bank

At first glance this appears to be a nice bank, however that is not the case in my experience. I have not been able to use the mobile app or login to the website to review my account activity for 3 weeks now. Each of my painful calls to customer service were not helpful. I was told they can’t see my account status or balance and someone would call me back. That has not happened as of yet.

I expressed concern that I have no visibility of my account activity and was told again there was nothing they could do but promise another callback. These practices not only appear unethical, but borderline illegal. I do not recommend this bank unless you’re using it as a secondary account due to the unreliable service I’ve received.
