I had an absolutely seamless experience with Aquarius Rent a Car in Malta. From the moment I made the booking to returning the vehicle, everything was handled professionally and efficiently. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and willing to go the extra mile to ensure I felt comfortable and informed.
The car was spotless, well-maintained, and exactly as described—driving around Malta was effortless and enjoyable. I especially appreciated their transparent pricing with no hidden fees, as well as the optional insurance coverage which gave me peace of mind throughout my rental period.
Communication was prompt and clear, and the pick-up and drop-off process was quick and straightforward. Compared to other rental companies I’ve used, Aquarius Rent a Car truly stands out for their reliability, professionalism, and customer-oriented approach.
I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from them again and highly recommend them to anyone visiting Malta. Exceptional service all around!
One staff member was rude, reimbursed for deposit
I had a very disappointing experience with Aquarius Car Hire. Before booking, the company was very prompt with their email replies, which gave me confidence in using their service. We had agreed by email to meet at 12:00 for my rental, but the representative did not arrive until 1:00pm. This delay caused me to miss pre-booked events on the first day of my holiday.
At 12:14, after emailing the office, I received a reply saying: “Our representative is finishing a rental nearby, so please wait in front of the office. By the time you receive this message, they should already be there or about to arrive.” Despite this assurance, the representative only arrived 45 minutes later.
By around 12:30, even the staff at the neighbouring rental desk grew concerned with how long I had been waiting and kindly offered to call the office for me — not once, but twice — since I had no minutes to call myself. This shows how excessive and noticeable the delay really was.
When the representative eventually arrived, I explained that I was now very late and needed to leave, as I no longer trusted their company to provide good service after failing to meet the agreed time. Instead of being understanding, he was extremely rude — telling me “you will not be reimbursed for your deposit anyways” and even saying “you’re not a good person.” This was both unprofessional and upsetting.
Because of the delay and poor treatment, I had no choice but to rent from another company at a higher cost. I had already paid a €50 deposit to Aquarius, but despite them not keeping to the agreed time, I have not been reimbursed. I have also emailed the office twice over two days to resolve the issue, but have received no response. This is also very disappointing as their replies were very fast before this issue.
Unfortunately, the lack of reliability, misleading communication, rude behavior, and complete unresponsiveness after the issue left a very negative impression. If any part of this review is inaccurate, I would welcome the company to contact me directly to clarify or explain the situation.
Update: i have been contacted by the company and they have reimbursed me for the deposit.
Scam alert – charged €259 for a traffic fine they never even paid!
I rented a car from Aquarius Rent A Car and was later charged €259 for an alleged traffic violation – €200 fine + €59 “admin fee.” But when I asked for proof, they admitted the fine hadn’t even been paid yet because they were still trying to transfer penalty points from their manager’s license.
So let’s be clear:
They charged me for a fine they hadn’t paid.
They gave me no proof, no official ticket, no photo.
Just vague excuses and a screenshot of a pending violation.
This is not just bad service. It’s a scam.
I later found out that this exact tactic is part of a wider fraud investigation in Malta, involving rental companies billing tourists for unpaid or fake violations. (Source: MaltaToday – Sept 2024)
Avoid this company at all costs.
If they’ve done this to you, file a chargeback and report them to LESA and the Maltese consumer authority.

From the first email to the return of the car, Aquarius were very fast in assisting us. Also had a puncture in Gozo which was solved in 35 minutes.

long time ago, I planned a trip to Malta with girlfriend. These guys almost ruined it and experience was so terrible that I still remember as if it just happened yesterday.
asked for a 50$ prepayment in advance, but requested extra payment (hidden charges) (not matching what they initially said) when it was time to pick up the vehicle in the airport. I lost th emoney I paid in advance but was still able to hire a car in another company and was still cheaper. They employee was also rude as hell.
Summarizing: awful SCAM. Stay away.
What an ordeal! Che calvario!
We booked a car with Aquarius rent a car for a week, paying for full protection insurance.
During our stay we were accused to have damaged a car during a parking, which never happened. Even if there was no proof of the damage, we had to give 80 euros for administrative costs, which at the end was given back to us.
The whole process lasted quite a while after coming back home, though, so even if we managed in the end to have all our money back with the assistance of the car hire, I still wouldn’t recommend car hiring in Malta.
Abbiamo prenotato un'auto con Aquarius rent a car per una settimana, pagando per una copertura assicurativa completa.
Durante il nostro soggiorno siamo stati accusati di aver danneggiato un'auto durante un parcheggio, cosa che non è successa. Anche se non c'era alcuna prova del danno, abbiamo dovuto dare 80 euro per le spese amministrative, che alla fine ci sono state restituite.
L'intera vicenda però è durata un bel po' dopo essere tornati a casa, quindi, anche se alla fine siamo riusciti a riavere tutti i soldi indietro, con l'assistenza dell'autonoleggio, non consiglierei comunque di noleggiare un'auto a Malta.

Detta hyrbilsföretag AQUARIUS som Autoescape har som partner ägnar sig at maffiametoder och verkar vara ansluten till organiserad fiffleriverksamhet är min slutsats efter vad jag upplevt och sett.
Mycket idiotpåhitt och lögner har jag fatt höra av dessa oärliga personer.
Klockan tio skulle vi ha bilen enl. vouchern hade vi planerat, men sag någon viftandes ett plakat med mitt förnam på. Han förde oss abrupt till ett bord på cafeet –inget kaffe bjöds- mittemot och tog fram papper och började skriva in belopp som skulle betalas och skrivas under på. Ett hette ”out of office”, han sa att eftersom klockan var över nio och inte tio så hade de inte öppet an och tvingades betala en avgift på 25 euro för det. Det hjälpte inte att jag sa att vi skulle ha bilen en senare tidpunkt, det skulle störa hans möte med nästa kund. Full tank som enl. min voucher inte ingick skulle jag betala också, men om jag lämnade bensin kvar skulle jag inte fa tillbaka något för det, något andra gör om man väljer detta tillägg. Skulle jag lämna in bilen tidigare ville de veta i förväg bara så att de kunde lediggöra en plats at bilen. Och nyckeln skulle vi lämna i en nyckelbox och allt skulle vara klart.
När jag skulle ta bilen sag jag en Dajhatsu istället för en Toyota, men inget att göra at, hade visst kunnat bli Trabant också. När jag ringde i god tid ett par dagar innan och ville lämna tillbaka bilen då vi hade bokat ett tidigare flyg vidare, sa de att jag måste betala en till ”out of office”-avgift då det skulle inte skulle vara en vardag, vilket de inte hade sagt något om, det var ju bara att lägga i nyckeln i boxen. Men om jag gick med på att träffa de många timmar innan min flygavgång då de hade en kund att möta som skulle ha bilen, så skulle jag fa slippa avgiften. Också skulle de ta sig en titt på bilen och ta emot nycklarna. Vi gjorde så ovilligen, men ingen fanns på plats, efter en lång stunds vantan blev jag osäker vad jag skulle göra nu men ställde sedan bilen på en ledig plats och la nyckeln i nyckelboxen. Sedan var vi tvungna vanta onödig många timmar på vårt flyg.
Sedan dess har jag inte hört av de, ingen bekräftelse på inlämnat bil, och inga pengar tillbaka för flera dagar tidigare inlämnat bil som de sa den dagen skulle lämnas till en annan kund. 10.000.- kr för självrisken som de la beslag på mitt kreditkort släppte de inte på fyra veckor och jag fick betalningsbekymmer under senare delen av vår månadslånga resa.
Innan jag slutförde bokningen erbjöds jag en försäkring för en liten summa och var inte möjligt att välja på hemsidan andå, men på plats fanns ingen sådan, de hade bara sin egen dyra försäkring. Det är lurigt att göra så, tank om något hade hant?
Svaret på min klagan från Autoescape dög inte och var inte hjälpfull alls. De har missat förstå det mesta och har gett mig standartsvar trots medvetet lurendrejeri att begära betald för andra tjanster an man har. De fattar inte att jag var tvungen skriva under, jag fick lata bli men då skulle de behålla mina pengar.
