A very good stay - a welcoming hotel

I visited Avisford Park recently as part of my tour‑planning work, and I was very pleased with the experience. The staff were professional, approachable and genuinely keen to help, and the hotel had a warm, welcoming feel throughout.

My room was well‑presented — the décor was a little dated, but it was comfortable with a very peaceful outlook onto the beautiful grounds. The communal areas were clean and spacious, with some wonderful period features such as the wood‑panelled restaurant, and the entrance hall is particularly attractive. Breakfast was well‑organised with a good range of options, and service was consistently friendly.

Some reviews have mentioned access to rooms. Although there is no lift in the hotel (I believe due to its listed status), there are plenty of ground‑floor rooms available, many of them close to reception. It’s important to specify your needs when booking to ensure you are allocated the most suitable room, as there are also rooms further away in the garden lodge. The hotel has already happily reserved a block of ground‑floor rooms close to reception for our upcoming visit.

From a tour‑operator’s perspective, the hotel offers a strong combination of comfort, character and good service. I’m looking forward to returning with a group for a Christmas break later in the year.

The staff are great but sadly…

The staff are great but sadly untrained. Simple things like water glasses are provided but water has to be requested. Roast beef is served with mashed potatoes and mustard or horseradish sauce must be requested and by the time it arrives, the meal has been eaten. The chef is worse than a school cook and his cooked desserts are usually burnt to a crisp. Bread and butter pudding was totally inedible and fruit crumbles burnt to the dish. Some of the rooms are a ten minute walk from the dining room. I would never use this hotel again!

I booked the hotel for an event at…

I booked the hotel for an event at Goodwood, on a train back from Manchester the week before Goodwood I realized I'd booked the wrong dates. Booking.com wouldn't allow me to change the dates, disappointing as I found later on I could have done, but even with dodgy mobile phone service I managed to communicate directly with the hotel and on the hotels advise cancelled and rebooked after having confirmation that my first booking would be fully refunded. This never happened despite numerous requests, the first at the hotel reception and last on with booking.com, who are equally hopeless, I never received my refund. Quite possibly the last time I use either organization, even though as member of Goodwood the location of the hotel is ideal, I'm not prepared to be mugged over after being told I would get a refund and fobbed off by booking.com saying they would raise a refund request, they took my money.

A wolf in sheep's clothing

Having stayed for the night
Can only describe the false facade of arriving @ the ambience of the fine setting
The room was very poor standard
Dirty stained carpet
Cobwebs hanging
Fire safety @ exit sign hanging in by 1 nail
No lock on bathroom
Heavily stained mattress
All walls dirty scuffed
Upon contacting the hotel
Reply was its a grade 2 listed building and is hard ti keep on top of
The carpet / mattress/ fire safety notice
Isnt grade 2
So basically management are not interested
Just money money money

From the creaking floors to the…

From the creaking floors to the creaking service this hotel could do with more tlc. Cleaning in the rooms was sporadic. Burning hot dishes in self service. No lifts despite putting families with prams in the attic. They were not what they claimed to be
