Poor performance from your conveyancing…

Poor performance from your conveyancing department.
With awful communication from the conveyancing department and up to two weeks for a simple response via email this is unacceptable.
I was extremely disappointed with the overall service that I received, considering that I have used your company before and found you to be very good.
I felt that I was doing your job by answering all the buyers questions when your department could have easily accomplished this.
As a result even when the sale failed to complete you had no idea as to what was happening which shows you where not communicating with the estate agent.

However, we have reviewed the file and note that there were ongoing enquiries at the time the buyer decided to withdraw. We also note that we did not render fees beyond the initial compliance checks and document costs.

There are better law firms in East Kent

As part of my work I have to deal with a number of local law firms around Canterbury usually not selected by me but managing a deal that I have to get involved in. In my experience, Boys and Maughan are one of the least easy to deal with and can be challenging. A recent transaction merely confirmed my opinion. There are better law firms in East Kent.

Not-my-problem attitude

Pleasant and prompt communication, nicely drafted agreement. However, the contract that was drafted could not be honoured even though obvious to a solicitor. Transactional mentality that leads to tunnel vision and thus inadequate advice. Sadly with a not-my-problem attitude.

Margate Boys & Maughan

I used the Margate office for a Litigation situation. My case was dealt with by a Senior Solicitor named Joana Daraskeviciute. I had heard very bad stories about Boys & Maughan but I have to tell you Joana went above and beyond to assist me. I cannot fault her work and general communication. She made sure I understood everything clearly and I did not feel rushed or stressed once I spoke with her. I know Solicitors cost a fortune but with Joana dealing with my case, it was worth it. Thank you so much Joana. Also her secretary was very efficient and accommodating. Lucy Brown I think her name was.

Absolutely abysmal

Absolutely abysmal.

Wasted 6 months of our lives and thousands of pounds.

This company was both the seller’s conveyancer and attorney/executor.

What was meant to be a quick sale dragged on so long that the owner of the property died.

The sale could have been wrapped up months before this if the conveyancer had been remotely competent. They took 9 weeks to order a management pack that could have been sorted on day 1. Not to mention various other delays where they simply didn’t reply to emails.

During this time we were homeless and even after the death of the owner there was no urgency in any of their actions. Over a month had passed and probate hadn’t even been requested.

Please avoid this company if you want anything done in a reasonable timeframe and be very careful if they are representing the other party in a property sale.

EDIT WITH RESPONSE TO B&M’S REPLY:

No, we were not your client. I’d love to know how it benefited anyone to take 9 WEEKS to order the management pack? I can’t possibly imagine your client (who is an attorney at the same firm) suggested you don’t do that. You are correct to say that you “didn’t act for the reviewer”. You didn’t act and that was the problem. I think a team of sloths may have acted quicker.

Your utter negligence and incompetence cost us thousands of pounds, has left us homeless and wasted 6 months of our lives.

I used this company for a land purchase and got 10k bill

I used this company for a land purchase. They quoted me around £5,000 plus VAT. I knew this was expensive but I had been waiting a year for the sale to go through and I thought they were a trusted and respected family run company i had used about ten years ago, so I agreed.

Fast forward to the final bill months later of nearly £10,500. They billed me for compeltely unnecessary checks such as gas safety certificates on land with no flexed structurd on it. I paid it out of desperation to get the sale done. I have since complained to them about how my bill doubled and they just ignore me.

Terrible company and I would never used them again. Please get a fixed price if you do!

Zero communication and lengthy delays

I am in the process with Boys and Maughan for buying my first flat. It has been three months (!) since I asked my initial basic questions in response to some of the forms from the seller. I have emailed chasing about 10 times now, and they have replied once. Every single time I ring (6 or 7 times) I am told their lines are busy and they will ring me back. They have never rung me back. If changing solicitors was an option, I would do that. Really really dissappointed with the non-existent level of service I have been given, especially since it's my first time buying a property and I was really hoping for a level of support.
Avoid them at all costs!

Efficient

We had a great experience with Boys & Maughan (Canterbury), they were very helpful and prompt. It felt like we were in good hands and everything was dealt with without any fuss. Graham was very efficient and handled our case well especially as it was a very quick turnaround.

These should be called Boys and YAWN.
Do not use these people.
I have been waiting nearly 5 months to sell my home. This company is acting for my buyer.
I have never known anything like it.
I have been ready to complete for 6 weeks and all we get from this lot is 'we'll get back ASAP'.
Well, I'm now in an impossible financial situation and looking to withdraw from the sale due to their lack of interest and urgency.
Use a conveyancing solicitor who is actually looking to help you, not one with such a 'can't be bothered ' attitude.

Poor Service/very expensive for no return!

I had an issue with a commercial deposit the Margate office, I gave pictorial evidence, text messages and emails proving the landlord was a con man yet the advice at £2500 "lets negotiate".

Would never use again or recommend to anyone!

Highly recommended for property conveyancing

Excellent service once again from Elliott and Toni when selling my parent's house recently. I chose them based on a similar experience we had two years ago when buying my own house. They are very responsive on email, professional throughout, and the price we paid was exactly as quoted. Thanks once again.

First rate service

Boys and Maughan Ramsgate recently handled the sale of our late mother's property. They were absolutely great. Emails and phone calls replied to in hours rather than days, friendly and helpful staff, great attention to detail, and patience when we bombarded them with questions. Highly recommended, and I will definitely be using them the next time I need a solicitor.

Margate - Conveyancing

I was very satisfied with the service from Danielle at the Margate Office who undertook the conveyancing for the sale of my property and purchase of another. Her communication was quick and efficient throughout the process which took 15 weeks and led to completion on 9th January 2025. I felt totally confident and supported during a stresful time & it was a lovely to meet Danielle briefly at the office.

Do not trust there estimates on work…

Do not trust there estimates on work they double them once work completed every time I asked roughly how much she would say oh about 500 example then turn out a 1000 . Everything from calls and down to every second they charge. No understanding no empathy and out to break your bank balance. Even the hourly charge changed half way through and final invoice charged at the later rate even tho most work done was before increase. After court not a care in the world how I was because a two minute call would had cost the world . I would never use again. Feel my mental health issues were there gain to charge me every penny I had . I’m penny broke to the point I can’t even put food on the table . Won’t recommend this company to anyone and glad to see the back of them. Never use

Most disappointed with the ‘service’ or…

Most disappointed with the ‘service’ or rather lack of provided by Richard Giles. I paid for an initial consultation and a further fee for some letters to be written on my behalf regarding what should have been a relatively straightforward matter. Communication skills were poor and calls not returned in a timely manner. Needless to say, that after several weeks of waiting, I was advised that the solicitor in question was no longer able to help me, presumably because he had neither listened to me nor read the supporting information provided to him in the first instance. Further disappointed that he then refused to refund the money for the letters that were not written. Poor service all round and would definitely not recommend.

Conveyancing - Canterbury

We used Boys&Maughn Canterbury offices for Conveyancing (buying a house). Leslie Saunders was originally assigned and she was great. When she went off sick the case seemed to go nowhere and after a wait - and a few visits to the office (don’t bother phoning unless you have the direct dial to who you want to speak to) - the case was reassigned to Allen Cox, who was bloomin’ fantastic - absolutely on it, calm, efficient, professional, astute and always polite. Can’t thank him and his/Leslie’s assistant, Kimberly enough.

Incompetence Made Us Homeless

We was not a direct client of Boys & Maughn but the party buying our property was. Throughout the process, we could see there was issues from the initial enquiries as they was asking questions about our conservatory (we dont have one we was selling an apartment). They caused delays through the process even asking basic enquires right on the point where everyone else in the chain was ready to agree dates.
Then comes completion day. The buyer turns up unannounced at 12pm before they had the okay to, so I advise the conveyancer has not given confirmation of funds, he calls Boys & Maughn who are adamant they have been sent and the fault lies with our conveyancer. We wait. He calls them again still same story and they refuse to check with accounts to make sure there is no problem which I could hear on speaker phone. Too arrogant to check. 15:45pm I get cc into an email sent from Boys & Maughn to our solicitor admitting they have made a mistake with sending funds and they hadn't been sent.. 20 minutes later all okay to continue. This in turn being so late in the day caused a rippling issue which deemed us to become homeless and not completing on the day as contracted with a Luton full of belongings and a dog and cat to find home for the night. This was the Ramsgate branch and could have been avoided with a simple check with accounts. I've also unfortunately had friends and family members with similar experience with the same staff members being involved. Simply a lack of care.
