16 Months of payments of R26 000+ but my debt is not decreasing due to structural flaws!
I have been under debt review with Debt Rescue for 16 months and have faithfully paid my full premium every month (which has now increased to R27 300).
I recently audited my IPDA statements and discovered that my debt restructuring plan is mathematically broken.
My Standard Bank credit card and two African Bank loans were left on the system at their original high contractual interest rates ranging from 21.5% to 29.25%.
According to Debt Rescue my Standard Bank was negotiated to just over 14%. Even after this my Standard Bank card alone accumulates R3 960 in pure interest every month, while my distribution payment towards it is only R3 282.
This means my debt actively INCREASES by nearly R700 every single month under their care! Almost my entire premium of R27 300 is being swallowed by the banks' interest profits, leaving the core principal debt untouched.
At the moment it seems that I am just paying for the bank's interest profit and not paying of the capital at all which was not the intent of the debt review process.
This plan was pushed through the court by Debt Rescue without them successfully negotiating the mandatory debt review interest rate concessions (0%–7%). I have sent a formal email escalation to the "Reviews" team and management.
Debt Rescue is my Registered Debt Counsellor and they have a statutory and legal duty under the National Credit Act to protect me as a consumer—a duty they are entirely failing to fulfill at the moment.
Right now, it feels as though I am just a number to them to generate monthly fee income, without any concern for protecting my financial well-being.
Please be extremely careful and do your own thorough research before applying at Debt Rescue. I would not recommend them to anyone.
UPDATE (Monday 27 July):
Debt Rescue’s national Team Leader, Steve Gould, explicitly promised a comprehensive written response by Friday 17 July regarding my negative amortization.
As an act of goodwill, I granted this company an extra full week to respond, yet they did not even have the professional decency to meet their own deadline and have gone completely silent.
• The Broken Math: One of their departments previously sounded incredibly proud that they got my interest reduced to 14.2%, even though it is double what it should be by law, and they even had the audacity to suggest I pay more to bring my capital down! It helps me absolutely nothing when my capital debt actively grows every single month because they failed their statutory duty to negotiate my interest rates down to between 0% and 7%.
• The Reality Exposed: Live screenshots from my online African Bank portal have now exposed the horrifying reality of how my profile has been neglected: my account interest rate is running at an astronomical 24.75%,
pushing me R18,491.43 in arrears despite me paying my full R27,300 premium every single month! I have faithfully contributed nearly R500,000 over 17 months, yet my debt has increased because of their mathematically 'stillborn' court order.
• Final Action Taken: They completely neglect their clients, ignore formal escalations since 25 June, and fail to perform their statutory duties. My formal Form 29 complaint is with the National Credit Regulator (NCR), and I am formally transferring my file via Form 17.7.
Based strictly on my devastating personal financial experience with their gross lack of service, I will never, under any circumstances, recommend anyone to use Debt Rescue. Stay away from them as far as possible!

From Professional Support to Negligence
Debt Rescue was brilliant for the first couple of years when I was badly overindebted. I am now at the end of my journey with only one debt to settle. Since then, as I started to clear my debt one by one this year, the communication started to slow down. Suddenly my requests weren't as important. And especially now, with this last account, trying to close it and get them to deduct a reduced amount from my account has been almost impossible. For over two months my emails have gone mostly unanswered, and when they answer, they just resend information that I have sent them with no new direction or next steps. It seems their departments do not communicate with each other, and they definitely do not prioritise clients who are about to leave them because they are settling their debts.
This speaks volumes of how they view client service. When we have business to offer them for the foreseeable future, their communication is brilliant, yet when you are on the verge of leaving them, they drag out the process for as long as they can; they do not answer emails or offer any calls from their end. When they do, they do not take any action. My debt counsellor has probably spoken to me three times since I subscribed to their services three years ago, and they have continued to deduct money from my account for the past two months based on my old debt amount, even though I now have significantly less debt.
This situation is putting my own studies directly in danger, as I budgeted for paying the freed-up monthly amounts towards these studies after settling earlier debts. I now have not been able to continue my studies for two months. This is directly related to Debt Rescue's inability to respond to emails, clarify basic questions, and adjust my debit amount.
You are meant to help clients get OUT of debt, not keep them there. Your initial service was excellent, but it's shocking to see how poorly you treat a client now seeking to escape debt.
