Eight O'clock 100% Colombian Peaks whole bean coffee (revisited)
This is a review of the Eight O'clock 100%Colombian Peaks whole bean coffee
The Eight O'clock brand of coffee has been around for over 165 years and has been packaged in the familiar red, black and gold bag for almost as long. When I was a kid in the 1950's it sold for 69 cents/pound or 3 pounds for $1.99. Boy have things changed. Today a 2.5 pound bag sells on the Eight O'clock website for $35.99 or at Sam's club for $19.99 which is where I purchased mine. This coffee comes in the traditional heat resealable red foil Eight O'clock bag with a one way de-gassing valve. Upon opening the bag you will find whole beans of a fairly high quality roasted to a city+ or a slightly dark medium roast. The beans have a very slight oil coating but can be considered mostly dry. As stated before this is a 100% Arabica Colombian coffee but it is a blend of both Supremo and Excelso beans. One of my complaints about Eight O'clock coffee whether the Original blend or this Colombian it has a fair amount of broken beans. The defects however do not affect the final brewed coffee. Upon opening the bag there is a fragrance of red wine with underlying nutty and chocolatey notes. A 67 gram dose was ground to approximately 895 microns or setting 8.25 on a Fellow Opus conical burr grinder. The freshly ground coffee had a delightful fragrance of roasted nuts and chocolate. The coffee was brewed with 1.2 liters of filtered tap water or a 1:18 coffee to water ratio in a Melitta Vision Luxe automatic drip brewer and resulted in a brew in the cup that was bright with pleasant acidity a medium mouth feel with red wine undertones which faded to a finish of milk chocolate and roasted hazelnut. The finish brew is well balanced, smooth and not bitter. The aroma of the brewing coffee was heavenly and is a , trait of Colombian coffee. An SCA Cupping score of 80 or higher is given to specialty grade coffees. Using the SCA scoring system I rate this coffee at 89.50. It should be noted that I am not a coffee professional so this scoring is just my honest opinion. This is one of the higher scores I have given a whole bean coffee. The overall quality or the beans and taste of the brewed coffee can not be matched at this price point. The Eight O'clock100% Colombian Peaks hits way above it's competition at the supermarket and would be a worthy addition to anyone's table or special event..this coffee comes highly recommended.
