K12 - Virginia Virtual Academy Avis 

Virginia Virtual Academy (K12) is a tuition-free online public school. We love it for its flexibility, its teachers, and at-home learning. Common complaints we had involved technology/platform issues, communication, and the amount of independent work.

Overall, it can work well for students who are comfortable learning independently online.

VAVA special education programs are a joke. If your child has special needs or a learning disability, this is not the place for them regardless of what they tell you. They do not adhere to the child needs in real time. On paper, sure it looks great but it's not the reality. The reality is they only care about those test scores for funding. They are publicly funded. They need to adhere to the same standards as public brick and mortar. My child has repeatedly been pushed through grade to grade even at my protests. Pushing a struggling child along year after year without meeting their needs is a disgrace and a complete set up for failure. They do not tailor to the childs specific needs. They slap a bandaid on it and call it intervention. There needs to be special needs classes for each grade, where the kids are not in the main classes. K12 seriously needs to look into this schools policies and what is actually happening. They shouldn't be allowed to turn public Google reviews.

Great when it works, problem is, it's constantly messing up. Outages and issues happen regularly. My child has been a student for years, and since moving to the "Canvas" platform, its been consistent issues.

The flexibility of the schedule, variety of course offerings and lack of teenage bullies are key positive factors for our student to reenroll each year!
An area that has been consistently in need of improvement is communication from the teachers to the learning coaches. A weekly/monthly high level snapshot of what is up next or tips to help the learning coach reinforce the curriculum at home would be great!
Without the option to have traditional "classroom conferences" there's very little formal opportunities to speak with teachers about our daughters progress. Unfortunately, not all teachers reach out after the onset of the year. I've taken advantage of the options provided: (1) Requested "notifications," so when our student gets an email, I receive a cc on it; (2) Read the K-12 platform notifications and (3) Email teachers as needed for clarity on coursework, grades, expectations etc.
A formal report card with grades at the end of each quarter to print out for our records would be nice too!

I love this online school it's the best thing I could have done for my children

This has been the best school my kids have ever been in. They actually get the help they need

The flexibility it offers. Being able to learn from home and set a schedule that works best for our family.
The structured curriculum. It was well-organized and easy to follow, which helped keep everything on track. The combination of live classes and independent work created a good balance.

The adjective that comes to mind with our K12 experience is RESPONSIVE. We feel we were given timely responses most of the time. This especially relates to the teachers who were prompt and available to help our daughter throughout her high school experience. Thank you!

My child is very comfortable with Vava. All of the teachers here are friendly and our experience has been nothing but positive.

For the most part when reaching out over any questions or concerns the teachers will reply back quick and in a timey manner.

Easy enrollment process, caring and attentive staff. The teachers are highly engaged, and extra help is always available.

We are loving online school. While my son is not excelling in math, it is not due for a lack of programs. Simply not sure what else I can do at this point.

My daughter was struggling in public school because the teachers had no time to give her the help she needed. Her grades were suffering severely. Switching to VAVA w opened up a whole new way of learning that allowed her to not only participate more, but to get the extra help she needed, all with smiling faces from the teachers. I would highly recommend this school to anyone who feels their children need a fresh start with people who care.

The platform is horrible. Not enough negative words to express how clunky, and outdated, NOT intuitive, confusing, and detrimental to learning. The teachers are great. They are not the problem. The support for the platform and the technology behind it is made for a computer geek. And no one seems to get or care how hard the software is to navigate. Buttons and tabs that don’t work, glitchy, etc. We are leaving the school because of this reason. A tragedy really. What a horrible decision administration made to adopt the platform.

Some of the teachers like in Spanish, And other teachers take long periods to respond back to a student's emails !

Overall a good choice if your child doesn't need any additional support. K12 lacks specialized asynchronous lessons for students with disabilities. They can't accommodate students needing The Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP). I was told my child will not be able to continue with k12 because he can't take the SOL when he starts 3rd grade.
