Thank you for contacting us. An investigation by the Animal Justice Project has alleged welfare concerns and published distressing images of goats in a farm contracted by Delamere Dairy, a supplier of Suma.
Since the Animal Justice Project approached us with these allegations we have investigated.
Initially we raised our concerns with Delamere. We received a detailed explanation from the farm in question, responding to all the concerns raised by the Animal Justice Project.
We have relied on the expertise of independent assurance standards to assess Delamere’s farms, rather than relying on Delamere’s own assurances or the footage supplied by the campaign group. In particular, we have reviewed:
• The Red Tractor Goat Farm Assurance certification for the Delamere farm in question
• Independent, unannounced veterinary inspections for the farm and a letter of assurance from the farm’s local vet that animals on the farm are well looked after.
• We have also been in contact with the accreditation body
We have also reviewed information on the farms that supply the Delamere products stocked by Suma. They all demonstrate through recent Red Tractor audits that they are complying with Red Tractor Dairy Goats Scheme Assurance Standards.
As such, for the time being we will continue to stock Delamere products, but we will be monitoring the situation closely.
Prior to this investigation, we had begun the process of reviewing the standards of animal welfare required for the products we stock. The issues and concerns highlighted by the Animal Justice Project will feed into that review.

Suma’s shame

Suma, how can you claim to "care deeply about animal welfare", when you refuse to drop Delamere Dairy products? A recent undercover investigation by Animal Justice Project showed clear evidence on camera of multiple abuses, severe lameness and the killing of kid goats - until you drop Delamere Dairy as a supplier you have no right to claim you care about animal welfare!

Will never shop here again. Greenwashing misleading marketing on their website claiming to be ethical, yet refusing to drop Delamere Dairy as a supplier -despite clear video evidence of multiple abuses, severe lameness and the killing of kid goats. Disgraceful immoral company. I would urge anyone that reads this to also boycott their company.

They do not carry our frequent or thorough enough inspections and animals end up suffering and dying because of this. Please think again about dealing with them for the sake of suffering. Thank you.

Suma supports animal cruelty hides behind red tractor

I`ve always bought Suma products over many years now because they have organic products and , I use to think, were ethical . Now I read a report from Animal Justice Project concerning absolutely unacceptable and indefensible treatment of goats at Delamere dairy, a supplier to Suma ,not so, wholefoods. Suma is continuing to use Delamere and using pathetic excuses, as can be seen in their replies to reviews on here, to justify that continued patronage. The Red Tractor scheme is being bandied about by Suma as some sort of shining light of animal welfare , when in reality Red Tractor has also been seen to fail abysmally in the past concerning it`s memberships treatment of animals . "Red Tractor is managed by the limited company Assured Food Standards (AFS) which is owned and funded by the British farming and food industry. Approval by Red Tractor is the farming and food industry essentially marking its own homework." Red Tractor is a farce in itself and Suma has shown itself to be more interested in financial gains than any ethical treatment or the welfare of other sentient beings. I will not be buying any of their products again and will use my social media accounts to bring this situation to the attention of as many people as possible. Absolutely disgusting corporate greed over the lives, welfare and treatment of sentient beings.

UPDATE 22/08/22 As can be seen from the response below from Suma ,a click and paste response to all reviews on Trustpilot, Suma are still refusing to accept the fact Red Tractor means absolutely zero when it comes to animal welfare . Dear Suma ,Red Tractor is run by the food and farming industry , the same industry that makes money from animal exploitation . Suma obviously couldn’t care less about animal welfare or it’s customers concerns . Let’s hope that customers with a sense of compassion and empathy for animals will turn their backs on Suma . Suma , a disgusting profit over everything else company full of pathetic excuses and indefensible reasons to keep trading with Delamere Dairy I’m done with them after many years of being a customer .

"Ethical" brand supporting animal abuse

With more people trying their best to buy ethical products, this company is cashing in while hiding the truth. Their website promotes they sell ethical and sustainable products, yet continues to sell products by Delamere Dairy - where an investigation has proven the goats are abused, neglected and suffering. They continue to sell their products knowing full well the suffering they are supporting. What's worse is they have fallen completely silent, ignored emails from concerned customers and still conduct false advertising. Boycott Suma whole foods.

Animal Justice Project released…

Animal Justice Project released shocking undercover footage of violence and neglect at Pasture House Farm, a North Yorkshire farm that supplies the UK’s largest goat dairy producer, Delamere Dairy. Despite being made aware of this horrific cruelty, Suma continues to stock Delamere products. Suma is a cruel and morally and ethically bankrupt company.
