Builder.ai is bankrupt

Builder.ai is bankrupt. If like me you've invested money, time and effort into this lot then hopefully after reading the following you'll know why nothing has been happening on your project.
It transpires that the company appointed a new CEO, Manpreet Ratia, in February 2025, taking over from founder Sachin Dev Duggal, whom the company credited with "transforming software development through AI-powered innovation."
The company informed employees during a May 20 call reported by the Financial Times that the company was filing for bankruptcy as funds abruptly ran out. Builder.ai was reportedly "unable to recover from historic challenges and past decisions that placed significant strain on its financial position."

So it seems 'funds abruptly ran out' is ai speak for 'you've lost your money'. Someone mentioned a class action in an earlier review, maybe that's the way to go? but what's the chances of getting your cash back, slim I'd say. Anyway sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

We worked with Builder.ai over a…

We worked with Builder.ai over a 12-month period on a complex software project. Throughout the engagement, their team handled design, project management, and code delivery with consistency and professionalism. Communication was structured, and milestones were clearly tracked. The process was well organized, and they were responsive to our input during each phase. The platform made it easy to monitor progress, and overall the collaboration was smooth.

Delivery 6 months late and still not complete

We engaged with Builder ai because they're a tech company and we're not.

We were lead to believe that they could take our requirements and build us exactly what we asked for.

We agreed a price based on an agreed delivery date, meaning the build should have been completed by November 2024.

I write this 30 April 2025 and we still don't have even an MVP usable version of the product.

We got our first testable release in January 2025, 2 months after we should have had a fully functioning platform available for use.

It was in this release we identified a whole host of issues, missing features and functionality.

Their response "they're new features and change requests we'll have to bill you for".

They weren't. We were very clear what we wanted but their excuse was they only build "what is written in the buildcard" - they write the build card.

Funny thing is, they've still not even completed/built what is in their buildcard!

We've had countless back and forths with them since January and their current position - to send us the code in a zip file and end the agreement.

No refund, no resolution just sending a zip file of code for a product that is unusable to a non-tech company and told if we don't like it then to speak to their legal team.

So instead of a fully functioning platform we had hoped to be released in November 2024, we're now out of pocket by six figures but at least now in April 2025 we have a zip folder of code for an unusable product.

Stay clear

28 months into a 6 month project. It's a scam.

TLDR: 28 months into a 6 month project. They stopped developing it without a working MVP, fired all the developers, and do not respond to my requests that involve figuring out what’s happening and when I will be getting a refund.

First, please feel free to reach out before removing this review. Builder.ai has taken down our bad reviews in the past saying they couldn’t verify them. I’ll be happy to point you in the direction of the people I’ve worked with including Jason.

Second, when I say this is a fraud from the top down, I’m not exaggerating. Please take a look at the news articles that have come out within the last two years regarding their CEO, CFO, and official auditor.
If you are still reading, that means you’re still considering it, so let me tell you about my experience.

I started this process by meeting with the sales team at the Silicon Slopes Conference in late 2022. I told them about what I wanted to build and they said that would be very easy and doable. We spent the rest of 2022 meeting with developers who reconfirmed how simple this would be and that even with a relaxed timeframe, we could expect a product in about six months. January 2, 2023, I signed the contract.

We had a number of problems from the very beginning, including them giving me the wrong documents to sign and mixing my product up with another. We kept meeting, moving forward, struggled constantly with getting the money flow correct. Weeks turned into months and eventually all of the deadlines were past due with no communication on when they would get updated. Near the end of 2023, we escalated and very clearly said that if they cannot develop this, it’s OK to just say as much and give us our money back. They repeated that they could, added additional developers to the team, and said they would be pushing forward with an MVP shortly.
When they released the MVP, the flow of money still didn’t work. Whenever I would bring that up or that I wanted to do end to end testing, they would say that they will be able to do that when it’s ready for full release. Again, months passed of this and I stayed patient. I have to say my patience has been the biggest mistake of this entire process.

In November 2024, 23 months in on a six month project, they marked it complete. It wasn’t. The money was still wrong, features I had previously approved had vanished, and when I asked why features I paid for weren’t on there, they said they had questions but decided not to ask them and just mark it complete instead. I was furious, but once again I was trying to make it work. I worked with my project manager, and we spent December creating an entire list of every acceptance criteria. I required photo or video evidence for each piece that it was complete or I wasn’t going to mark it done. I also told them they had until the end of March.

As we moved through January and February 2025, they started slipping in comments about how they didn’t think we would make the deadline. I continued escalating, people tried to work with me on it, and I decided to once again, find my patience. It did me no good.

On March 26, my project manager told me that they were no longer working on developing my project. They had fired everyone who would’ve been part of developing it and had no plans on what to do going forward. They were supposed to tell me the week before when it happened and he expected that I should get an email about it that week. When I tried reaching out to the legal team that same week about canceling any sort of ongoing contract and getting my money back, they told me they were going to refer me to another group. It is April 18, 2025 and still I have received no communication.

My patience now means that I have signed myself up for a painful legal battle. I’m leaving this review to let others know that if they already have a contract, chances are no development work has happened for the last month and they need to demand answers. This is also here for people considering this company. Do not fall for it.

Great experience working with Builder

We had a great experience working with Builder AI for our app development. The team was professional and went the extra mile to deliver a high quality app on time. Their project and support teams have also supported us on the journey. Would recommend them.

Do Not Hire! Class Action Lawsuit?

Horrible experience, this has been a complete scam. We engaged Builder in May 2024 to create a simple marketplace website with 11 “blocks” (what they call features). We were quoted 4 months to complete, then added 5 more standard blocks that brought out timeline to 6 total months. We are now 11 months into the engagement and still don’t have the product shipped. We’ve paid all our bills from them on time, thousands of dollars so far, so far with zero result other than some mediocre UI designs with many basic language errors (our designer changed twice, and apparently none of the three designers are fluent in English).

Our “Productologist” was sold to us as a Product Manager but demonstrated minimal ability to research or be curious about our target user; this role is really an low-value Project Manager role, which is completely different from a high-value Product Manager role.

Our Productologist was then laid off three weeks ago, all our biweekly meetings were cancelled, and we have yet to get another Productologist assigned to us, despite several “please be patient” emails from Neal Weatherley, who is apparently in charge of reassigning Productologists. I’ve sent three stern emails to Neal, the last of which threatening legal action, and my most recent email got Neal’s OOO message, because apparently now is the time to take vacation until April 14th??? So much for putting a paying customer first.

At this point we’ve decided to pursue legal action to either get a full refund or get the existing code handed over to us. We know there is code, we’ve reviewed the most release, but it’s abysmal - the front end isn’t fully connected to the backend and, even more ridiculous, the UX/UI doesn’t even incorporate some of the most basic feedback we gave them back in December 2024 (e.g. simple links at the top for our three main user types, both sides of marketplace + admin).

Pathetic that Microsoft and other large funds have invested so much in this sham. Where was the customer diligence? As a founder who has raised VC, I’ve seen better diligence and more care about actual solutions done at Pre-Seed stage. The founder should be fired altogether, and the board should prioritize getting an actual operator in who will rightsize this capsizing ship and start delivering on promises to customers.

Builder is dealing with a perfect storm at this point: technical debt, financial debt, and now legal debt due to seriously unhappy customers. I hate to say it, as a current customer, but they’re on the road to likely bankruptcy and dissolution. DO NOT hire them, and good luck to you if you’re a customer caught in the storm.

If anyone is pursuing a class action lawsuit, please contact me at diane at senioryear dot co and I will join.

The worst experience ever!!

The worst experience ever!!
We hired them in March 2023 to build a custom app with a promised delivery timeline of 6 months. It’s now April 2025, and while the app is technically “live,” it remains unstable, buggy, and in many cases, unusable. Basic functions like login still fail. We’ve followed up repeatedly and have been met with delays, vague updates, or silence.

This project has cost us significant time, money, and stress.
Do not work with them!

Team was let go, no communication, but the payments still come out!

I'm in the middle of my app build and I get an email that my "productologist" has been let go. The only other numbers I have of the sales crew that brought me on board have also been let go. No messages from the company, but my payment still came out, so no problem with that! Nobody will respond to me at all. Very unprofessional and I'm thinking illegal, as there is a contract in place. I'm hoping someone will response to my multiple points of contact attempts, but so far, it feels like a con job.

Horrible experience

I've had a deeply frustrating horrible experience with Builder.ai. The team consistently failed to meet delivery timelines and struggled to resolve even basic issues. Their lack of technical capability has caused significant delays and disappointment. Unfortunately, after repeated setbacks, I've reached the point where I can no longer continue with their service. Do not recommend this platform at all.

Joost has been involved with our App build from the early stages. His patience and professional ability are second to none. Its a daunting experience and an awful lot of work and meetings. Joost and Builder.ai have been amazing. We are now 80% done and the end result is going to be amazing!

Very unprofessional customer service. Terms and conditions are very misleading and not clear precise. Training is not completely transparent, and only four days into the job has put me in a financial burden which was never told to me in the beginning that this would happen or could happen.

It sounds like you’ve been scammed by someone pretending to be Builder.ai.

To be clear: we never ask anyone to deposit money to work for us.

What a horrible experience you’ve gone through. We managed to get another scam site taken down last year. So we’ll pass these details on to our legal team to investigate.

It was a very bad experience. Never ever.

It was a very bad experience— money, time, and effort lost. Mental trauma too.

1. The modular format of the technology is very deceiving.
2. The three-month project took over three years and had bugs even after going live.
3. Support took 3-6 months to fix the bugs. The client is at their mercy.
4. The project teams frequently change, adding to the delay of the project.
5. Issues related to finance and billing took more than six months to resolve.
6. No amount of escalation works; everyone is the same.

After more than three years, we had to finally dump the product out of frustration. No refund.

The total cost and timeline might sound exciting but don't fall for it. It's a trap.

Improper Billing Process

Billing and Compliance Issues:
Builder.ai’s billing processes are fraught with issues, particularly concerning compliance with the Indian Tax Code. The platform requires tax information to be validated before project initiation, yet the invoices generated often lack GST details or fail to provide copies of filed GST returns. This lack of transparency and compliance can lead to significant delays and complications in project management.
Project Management and Timelines:
The company struggles with adhering to project timelines. Our project, initially slated for completion in June 2024, was delayed until December 2024 due to billing disputes and inadequate resource allocation from Builder.ai. These delays were not compensated, either financially or through extended project timelines, despite the company’s assurances.
Quality Assurance and Bug Reporting:
Builder.ai’s product team claims thorough testing, yet numerous bugs persist, requiring clients to meticulously report each issue to the Care team. This process is cumbersome and inefficient, adding to the project’s overall delay and cost.
Customer Support and Escalation:
There is a noticeable absence of a clear escalation matrix for addressing grievances. The support structure seems designed to delay resolution, thereby extending project timelines and potentially inflating costs. This lack of structured support and accountability is a significant drawback.
Overall Recommendation:
Given these experiences, I would not recommend Builder.ai for projects requiring strict compliance, timely delivery, and robust customer support. The company’s processes appear to be structured in a way that benefits their timeline and cost management at the expense of client satisfaction and project efficiency.
