Great customer experience
As someone without much experience in software development, they have made a real effort to understand what I am trying to achieve and a lot of patience, and flexibility, as my vision was not fully baked when we started. Nightmare on Builder.ai street
Here's my account of my experience with Builder.ai that led me to burn my money, time, lose business and sleep, for an app that was supposed to be done in 5 to 6 months but is still work-in-progress 30 months later.
In April 2020, I signed up with Builder.ai to make an app for my business. A few months into the development, they hiked their estimate saying they had underquoted by mistake and asked me to pay higher charges. They were also not depositing the GST they were collecting from me with the government which was increasing my outflow as I wasn't getting the Input Tax Credit. The development was going very slow and I stopped making my weekly payments, they stopped development.
A few months later, I put my review on TrustPilot and immediately the company swung into action. A call was setup with the COO, the VP and my project head. They agreed to all my feedback and asked me what I wanted. I asked them to refund my payment. They offered to resume development and not charge me for the balance work. I agreed. Even my GST was deposited by them and finally it was reflecting on the portal.
The COO also requested me to edit the TrustPilot review and I did so, in good faith. They said the app would get done in about 2 months. This was in July 2021.
My project was re-initiated, with a new project manager and a new development team. This was the start of the real nightmare. The new PM did not have access to the app as she said she didn't have a compatible apple device or even a simulator to test the app, so she couldn't add any value as she was always in the dark. Our weekly calls would be 2 minutes long as she had nothing to say except - I will pass on your feedback to the developers.
With every new release, I would have to spend a painstaking 4 to 5 hours to test the app and fill out a spreadsheet to highlight issues. Every release would be full of bugs. The app would crash frequently and had major issues with the flow, with the business logic, with stability. I have detected and documented 250+ issues with the app and it was apparent they were doing no QA at all.
Every time I'd receive a mail to test a new release, I'd feel really anxious just imagining my ordeal to be. I'd begin testing and in 3 minutes I'd detect major roadblocks. All my feedback never made them say 'why didn't we detect this?!' and they'd just say, 'OK we will fix it.'
The e-commerce module did not have an option to go to the cart (they said I never asked for this feature so it was not part of the wireframe)!
The inventory module had blanks or no values in product sizes. So the user wouldn't know a shoe listed there was size 10 or 11 or 9! When I reported this feedback, they resolved it by eliminating the size column from the listing. I was flabbergasted.
September 2022, I sent a mail to the COO, the VP, one of their Directors and the project head highlighting my grievances and stating that even 15 months after the COO re-initiated the project, my app was incomplete. I wrote to this powerful group that the Project Manager was a mere messenger and had no role to play, the development team had no understanding of my business and was not skilled at all. I even expressed surprise that my app has been a work-in-progress for so long and no one from the management ever contacted me for feedback and that I was having to do all the QA myself and was spending my Sundays in suffering, detecting bugs in new releases of the app. I sent them the feedback tracker for them to see what kind of major bugs were being detected by me.
It's been around 3 months, I have not received a reply from any of the dignitaries I sent the email to.
The development team sent me yet another release a few weeks after I sent that email, saying it was the 'final build' and if I didn't send my feedback soon, they'd consider the app done and close the project.
In testing just 20% of the app, I sent them major bugs that would not allow the app to function at all (for eg. orders placed on the e-commerce module were not retaining customer names, product variations were showing the same size in the front end, the Search field was not working, Password reset wasn't working, etc). The app was FAR from being final.
I sent this feedback and asked the project manager to talk to the management and get me a refund as I couldn't be doing this kind of testing all my life. It's been over 2 weeks and I haven't heard back. In the meanwhile, the development team has sent me another release with a note 'we have fixed the earlier issues you reported, please review this release and report any feedback.'
I have given up.
I have lost sleep, money, time, working with Builder.ai. The hardware that was supposed to work with the app is now out of warranty. Plus, $300 lost on Apple developer account renewals. All-in-all, it's been a nightmare. I'd never recommend them to my friends.

I would not even want to rate them a single star, they take time to communicate and do online demos with you via Zoom, they look friendly and professional group from India, and said they have an office in London, their contact number landline never works, can't get in touch with the same sales person anymore, I agreed £2K in 24 payments monthly, realized they are trying to take payment off my business card twice a month and a total £4800 in 1year and half time has planed, don't waste of your time and money on them.
