Coffee like gravel
For the second time, I've been given Harris and James coffee as a present and found it to be the most insipid and flavourless coffee I've ever tasted. When the caffetiere was emptied, it was like a pile of gravel landing in the sink. The beans had barely been ground at all so no wonder no flavour came out! We ground it more ourselves after that but it's still not as flavoursome as Morrison's House Blend 3* Really poor when it's very expensive. I'd never buy it myself after x2 of the same experience.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry this missed the mark for you. Our House Blend is speciality grade coffee, light to medium roast (Great Taste 2-Star) and we grind a little coarser for cafetières than supermarket roast which is usually dark or very dark; it can look “gravelly” but should give a clean, sweet cup. If it tastes thin, try 65 g/L, water just off the boil, steep 6–7 min, press slowly, and decant immediately or go one notch finer next time. If you prefer a darker, punchier cup? Our Italian Blend (dark roast) may suit you better.
We also grind to order: add a note at checkout and we’ll grind anywhere from Turkish (very fine) to extra-coarse for cold brew, or select whole beans if you grind at home.
Ps. Quick tip: because cafetière grounds are coarse and non water soluble, it’s best not to rinse them down the sink - grounds can build up (especially with fats) and block pipes. Please pop them in the food-waste bin or compost instead.

I recently purchased Harris and James Caramilized White chocolate and am sorry to say( despite the price tag of £4.99 for 86g) it was the most bland chocolate I’ve ever tasted. The very slightest of caramel taste . Will not purchase again. What a disappointment.

Hi Helen, thanks for giving our Caramelised White a try, and I’m really sorry it didn’t hit the mark for you.
Our caramelised white recipe was intentionally simple - just three ingredients, using finest single-origin cocoa butter, tasted milk powder to create a gentle toasted-toffee note rather than a very sweet, intense caramel flavour. It sounds like that subtle profile wasn’t to your taste, and we appreciate the honest feedback.
We retired/sold out of this bar on our online store in December 2024 (last made summer 2024) as part of a range refresh. Because caramelised white is delicate, bars that are close to or past their best-before can taste flatter than intended. If yours was short-dated or past best before that could explain the muted flavour you experienced.
Either way, we’d like to put this right. If you can share your order details and the best-before/batch code via email thankyou@harrisandjames.com , our team will sort a refund or replacement product and recommend something that better matches your taste next time.

This is one of the worse quality and it tastes like something not really ethical like something I can not say or describe which can be perfect to say Shitttttty taste with questionable fine granules in the so called chocolate paste ( Soft chocolate inner layer and under the hard outer layer of chocolate ) as they were like two layers and the taste makes me remember something not pleasant should not be in the taste of the chocolate !!
My experience regarding two kinds of products one like little chocolates called the cafe and there was like imitation to coffee beans on the top and the other kind was the like biscuits two flavours covered with chocolate and the taste unpleasant at all and very shocking !
The taste like pharmacy pills with goat taste very bad taste !!

None of our recipes use a “chocolate paste,” so I’m wondering whether you received one of our filled bars or perhaps a filled gift assortment. Either way, the texture you described definitely shouldn’t be there.
Could you message us directly at info@harrisandjames.com with the product name and, if possible, the batch code/date on the wrapper and order number if you purchased from us or Amazon? We’ll look into the issue straight away and arrange a refund or a fresh replacement whichever you prefer.
Your experience matters to us, and so does keeping our chocolate ethical and delicious. Thank you for helping us put things right.

Harris and James dark chocolate.
I gota bit of 'the bright, fruity notes, subtle hints of sweet spice, and a smooth, lingering finish' but just the vaguest hint of chocolate? For a bar that costs the best part of 5quid and is not even 100g not good enough. For a chocolate lover it's on a par with supermarket own brand. Yes very disappointed.

I love your coffee in store but your…
I love your coffee in store but your ground coffee to buy in packs is never ground enough. I find it far too coarse and it never gives enough flavour. This is the case brewing on the stove as well as using a cafeteria.
It's not cheap buying coffee this way and disappointing when it's 'brown' in colour, I.e. flavourless.
Please grind the beans better!!

Hi Karl, Thank you for your kind words about our in store coffee. For at home - if you order on our website you can add a message when ordering to request it to be ground finer than our standard we will be happy to do this. Using a cafeteria our grind level works best when brewing for 6 to 7 minutes and using about 18 to 20g per 300mm of water.

I called for two takeaway coffees £7.20…
I called for two takeaway coffees £7.20 in Holt mine was a flat white which was barely warm and nothing like a flat white more just a very milky coffee my sons was a latte which he said was nice but not very warm, think I just got the remains of his latte minus any froth,wouldn’t use again only went because the one on cross street was closed which does very good coffee

Google and your own website state the…
Google AND YOUR OWN WEBSITE state the coffee shop is open at 9:30am daily. That's not the case. On two occasions now I have turned up at Aldeburgh to find they will not be open until 10am. I do not have the time to wait 30 minutes, so my loyalty has now switched to the two magpies who actually open when they say they are going to open.

We completely understand your frustration at finding the shop closed when you expected it to be open. As a seasonal business, our opening times do vary throughout the year, and we acknowledge that they were not accurately reflected on Google and our website at the time of your visit. These have now been updated / request pending with google to help prevent this from happening again.
We’d also like to mention that we have recently opened a second shop in Aldeburgh, so even when one location is closed, the other may be open. We’re always aiming to improve our service, and your comments have highlighted a key area for us to tighten up.
While this review appears to relate to our shop rather than our website service, we do take all feedback seriously and will use it to better communicate and serve our customers.

Recruit better staff!
I would give a review but as we walked into the Aldeburgh shop at 4.59 with 3 people in front of us paying for ice cream, we were told that sorry we cannot serve as we are closed!
It's wonderful in this climate that a company is doing so well they can turn away a party if four just so they can leave at 5 on the dot and not 5 past their alloted working hours!
Poor show. Recruit better staff

Amazing quality chocolate and great customer service
I was delighted with the quality and taste of the chocolate shortbread, I have tried all types and my favourite are dark chocolate and chocolate orange, I have ordered three times and will keep ordering, lovely treat and present to loved ones. Also great customer service when there was a slight delay in my order. I cannot recommend high enough, well done HandJ team and keep up the great work!

Visited the new h&j cafe in beccles today
After ordering at the counter we were left waiting for 35 mins for our tea ! Not a good start , I had ordered a cheese scone advertised at £3 but was charged £3.70 apparently the butter doesn’t come with it ! What ? Should this not be advertised , after nearly an hour I approached counter again for said cheese scone and asked for it again as my carpark time would run out before i even got my food , and then found my decaf tea was more expensive than a normal tea and despite a slightly larger cup that’s it no second cup like normal tea drinkers get with their little tea pots
Disgraceful service and prices I will not be back

Horrible place, don't waste your money!
Horrible place. Looked like a stockroom with chocolate boxes everywhere. To take a seat you have to navigate round an empty deli counter. They need to decide what they want to be - café, pizzeria or choclatier, as currently an awful café. The hot chocolate was the worst I have ever had & expensive for a basic hot chocolate. I couldn't drink it! Our drinks were in plastic mugs & the muffins were in brown bags, felt like we had stopped at a roadside food van. Not very welcoming or relaxing after a drive to get to Southwold.
Do not bother with this place, plenty of better and cheaper places on the High St in Southwold to have a drink.
Follow up after response from Alex: Thank you for responding, perhaps more should be made of the eco-friendly cups, etc. with more information on display to explain this otherwise the cups just look cheap & plastic. Also looking at another previous review, it stated you had a refit. It is a shame therefore you couldn't have found a better location for the deli counter, especially if left empty or just used to display boxes of chocolates part of the year.

We like to try and support sustainable and environmental options where possible and this includes the cups we serve our drinks in. We use Huskee cups, which are crafted from repurposed coffee husk—a natural byproduct of the coffee industry. Not only are these cups durable, but they also help support our environmental goals by reducing waste and supporting coffee farmers.
Regarding the layout, the counter you saw is actually our second gelato display, essential in the summer when our gelato offerings are in high demand. In the off-season, we utilize it to showcase our handmade chocolates. While moving it isn’t feasible, we work to make it a functional and inviting part of our café experience year-round.
As a seasonal business, we strive to offer a variety of options, including pizzas and house-made hot chocolate, to create a versatile experience for all tastes. Our bean to bar hot chocolate is crafted with minimal processing to let the natural flavors of chocolate shine through.

We recently ordered chocolates from Harris and James, and I must say, it was an indulgence worth every bite. I gave this company one star as prior to reviewing, I emailed them six weeks go saying how disappointed I was with the chocolates and especially as they wrap the individual chocolates in plastic wrappers. As it was hot weather, they were sweating. I usually buy Holdsworth chocolates and they are brilliant.
I never did get a reply from H&J hence my poor review. It’s a good idea to reply to customers and handle the complaint so that the customer does not resort to posting like this. Also the picture on the box did not represent what was in the box, a mixture of dark milk and white chocolate. They were all milk. So very disappointed and would never buy them again.
Thank you for replying. I did not receive an email from you and check my Spam every day. Yes the box showed dark, white and milk chocolates. If they only had milk chocolates, that’s misrepresentation. I still don’t think each chocolate should be wrapped in plastic. My family thought they looked very cheap. It’s a lesson learned, I will stick to my trusted supplier.

Hello Joy, Thank you for your message. We replied to you on the same day as you emailed us on the 20th August, possibly this went to your spam box.
I am sorry you were disappointed that the chocolate nut selection did not contain dark chocolates. We have a description of each chocolate on the packet and it says white and milk chocolates. We have three pictures on the front of the pack and this shows two milk chocolates and one white chocolate. We use more cocoa content in our speciality chocolate so it will appear slightly darker than chocolate with a low cocoa content.
We also sell chocolates in a selection box which are not individually wrapped. The sharing box contains chocolates individually wrapped in a compostable pulp base material which is not plastic, the wrapper and the packing says this is compostable.
If your product had melted then please return it to the shop you purchased it from for a full refund. Chocolates need to be kept cool and out of direct sunlight.

Don’t expect a china cup when you have coffee at Harris & James…
I love having coffee at Harris & James in Southwold but recently they refurbished it. When you order coffee to have in the shop they now serve it up in disposable cups instead of china cups. How can this be sustainable? I spoke to the manager and she said that when the shop was refurbished the dishwasher was taken away. I have written to complain but have had no answer. In the meantime I won’t be having coffee there any more.

I thought I would buy some chocolate ice cream only to discover when I’d gotten home that the ‘chocolate’ ice cream hasn’t much chocolate in it. It contained emulsifiers and E numbers and various other ingredients that left me wishing I’d read the ingredients before purchase.

I’m sorry to hear about your experience with the chocolate ice cream!
At our shop, we pride ourselves on using our own bean-to-bar chocolate in our gelato, ensuring a rich and authentic flavour without any artificial flavourings. We follow an authentic Italian recipe which you would see all over Italy with a tiny amount of required emulsifiers. We use local whole milk and cream, 100% cocoa chocolate, sugar, and less than 1% on the other ingredients.
Good chocolate
In full disclosure, I work in chocolate but not for this company.
If you are new to dark chocolate, try their 70%. We like their 85% as well. I do not like their coffee chocolate but things are subjective.
We have not had their hot chocolate but we learned of the company on a visit to Suffolk and heard others talking about it. When I order online, it always shows up well wrapped and on time.
I shared some of the 85% at a recent tasting and many liked it. Not all liked it, as that is realistic situation 85%, but I find it is a bar that is not astringent and overwhelming. When my husband was hospitalized for cancer, he started talking to a fellow patient about health and diet and recommended this bar as a satiating treat he could savor and not scoff. His fellow patient really liked the Harris and James bars.
