I took my car to KAM for an MOT and unfortunately, it failed. The faults listed were a rear right indicator and brake bulb not working. Fine, these things happen. But then I got a call from Paul, who told me it would cost £667 to get everything fixed so it could pass. The work supposedly included:
• Replacing the headlight
• Replacing a suspension bush
• Replacing one brake bulb
• Labour (according to KAM the bumper needed to come off to access the headlight)

I started to feel uneasy – especially when they said my car needed a new headlight levelling motor. I did some research and found that my car doesn’t even have a separate levelling motor. The levelling issue turned out to be a blown 5A fuse, which I replaced myself for 60p. I also ordered a replacement headlight on eBay for £64, fitted it myself, and replaced the brake bulb (£4 for a pair – only used one). Problem solved.

To double-check, I looked up OEM headlight prices. Ford sells them for £263, and Halfords has them for under £150. Even if they used the most expensive OEM parts, I can’t understand how labour alone pushes the cost to £667. Are they charging £300+ just for fitting a headlight, a brake bulb which does not even need screwdrivers to access and a bush?

I didn’t feel confident taking the car back for a retest – I had a strong feeling they’d “find” something else. So, I went to a different garage, who passed it without issue after the DIY fixes I did myself.

Here’s what I actually spent:
• £64 – Headlight (eBay)
• £0.60 – 5A fuse
• £4 – Brake bulb (1 used)
• £50 – MOT retest at another garage

Total: £118.60
KAM’s quote: £667

Honestly, I left KAM feeling like they were trying to upsell me work that wasn’t needed or massively overcharging. I won’t be going back and I’d strongly recommend getting a second opinion before agreeing to any work they suggest. A simple MOT shouldn’t turn into a near-£700 job based on questionable advice.

Go elsewhere for peace of mind.

My wife took her car here on the 1st May to the Highbury Vale Nottingham branch ,phoned in the morning and spoke Paul to book her car in for Oil and Filter change , never asked a price as thought it would be same cost for everyone but I think Paul thought my wife was coming on her own and was surprised to see me with her and when I asked how much to change oil&filter he quoted £169 and I could see he written it down on his big note pad , we both said that’s expensive and asked him several times if this was correct and he said yes and he knew I could see what he written down , so we begrudgingly left it as we needed it doing, but when we went online and called another Kam servicing they quoted £99 plus if we wanted the synthetic oil it would be an extra £35 which we did , so I phoned him back and told him the Facts he sheepishly admitted he’d got it wrong and would charge correctly, he knew what he was doing and it’s wrong that in this day and age a woman still cannot go to garage without fear of people like Paul taking advantage, i thought Dinosaurs like him died off in the 90s . I hope the management look at this

Took my car into Hucknall branch today as one of my lights wasn't working. Fitted me in very quickly and replaced faulty bulbs. OK this was a simple job but I have been using them for MOT/Service and all repairs ever since this branch opened. Staff are always helpful and pleasant, work completed in time slot agreed and prices reasonable. I don't even consider going elsewhere anymore. Brilliant!

Took car in for service and they advised they had found something that could be an issue further down the line and steps to ensure I didn’t encounter problems very helpful

Took my car today 23/04/2025 to the Ascot Drive Branch in Derby, dealt with Stewart, who was absolutely fantastic, recognised the issue and more importantly the dangers ( brakes and tryes ), and made a action plan immediately. Sadly no option for zero stars.

KAM fitted a new front suspension arm yesterday, picked the car up to find an awful grinding noise and tracking was way out to the point my steering wheel was locked to the right whilst driving. Apparently this had been road tested. Took it back and they sorted the noise but not the tracking.

Took the car back a second time today to be told it would be ready in around an hour and Craig the manager would track the car himself.
After 2 hours I heard nothing so went to see what was going on, only to find my car still on the ramps and Craig not sorting the car as he told me.

I took the car away to find they had levelled the steering but now the car pulled to the right. Back I went for a 3rd time to be given all the excuses under the sun - suspension arm needs time to bed in, tracking is the hardest part to do blah blah blah. I was even made to take the mechanic out twice in my car to show him the issue!

They finally gave in and took my car to Notts Auto Service next door who sorted the issue immediately.

I was told thank you for helping us diagnose a problem with our equipment!! Highly doubt they will even have their shoddy 'state of the art' equipment looked at.

AVOID THIS PLACE, STAFF KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CARS AND CARRY OUT 'WORK' TO A VERY POOR STANDARD!!!

I have been using Kam at Sawley, Nottingham now for almost 3 years, they have looked after our 3 cars for all their needs.
