I spent 4yrs having pain management at a spire hospital to be told i was in operable and nothing could be done for me.
I was devastated and suicidal at the thought of living in bed with the most horrendous back pain and my family having to take care of me.
UNTIL
I was given the name Mr Mo Akmal, he changed my life completely after two spinal surgeries i am PAIN FREE living life to the full.
I have so much love and faith in Mr Akmal and his team at the London spine unit at St John & St Elizabeth and i recommend him instantly if anyone even mentions back pain.

I was under the care of Mr Akmal and the team at the Spine Unit from Jan 2013 to September 2016. I had to turn to private practice as the NHS did not regard my symptoms as important enough to look any further beyond "just keep taking the drugs", and it was the best thing I ever did. My journey to spinal health has taken me through 2 lumbar spine injections, a discectomy and decompression (L4/L5), a further 2 lumbar spine injections, a spinal fusion (screws, rods, a cage... the works), plus another 2 SI joint injections.
At every stage, Mr Akmal and Dr Lok made me feel listened to and even when I began to dispair that I would never be pain free, would reassure me that they would continue to help find the source of my pain.
The options were always explained to me in great detail, all of my questions were answered, and my concerns taken into consideration. I never felt dismissed or that my questions were silly. Mr Akmal has a cautious approach and explores less invasive procedures before considering surgery. I appreciated this greatly as the surgical option that I ultimately had, was quite a serious one and I went in knowing that everything else had been tried first.
I hope to not have to see Mr Akmal and the team again - in the nicest possible way - but if it becomes a necessity, I know I will be in good hands.

Initial assessment, review and Kyphoplasty experience was all very smooth. However, the aftercare post surgery experience was not that great and could do with some improvement.
I am not sure if my spine has healed yet or not as I still experience back pain but it is not as bad as before surgery.
I would definitely recommend Dr Mo Akmal to patients but would request the staff and doctors at London Spine Unit to certainly improve their post treatment care process.

Recommended to the Spine Unit by my local surgery after suffering for weeks and even months extreme severe pain in my hip and down my leg and foot. The pain was excrutiating. Finally I made an appointment for a consultation with Mr. Akmal for which I will be eternally grateful.

At my first meeting with Mr. Akmal I was absolutely adamant that I wanted an operation on my back to be sure of a permanent cure and definitive solution regarding my disc bulge which was causing severe stenosis.

Mr. Akmal listened patiently. At the end of my tirade Mr. Akmal explained
that an operation on the back wasn't appropriate or necessary and could even make matters worse. He listened carefully and then patiently explained and advised other more appropriate ways forward. This included lumbar decompression surgery on my spine and a series of
injections at 2-4 week intervals.

I am so happy to say, thanks to Mr. Akmal, I have my life back on track
and can resume most of my previous physical activities.

I believe that Mr Mo Akmal is one of the best spine surgeons in the U.K. Anyone who suffers from back problems should see Mr Akmal and he would be able to provide you with the best solution.

Good service from start to finish - very proactive, willing to listen and persistent in trying to resolve my issue. Have seen them twice now (first time back in 2012) and would see them again in future.

The London Spine Unit were great! Very helpful team! I have a bulging disc and they put me forward for Cortisone and facet joint injections with Caudal Epidural. Although this didn't cure me, it did allow time for healing and I now do Pilates which helps me manage my pain along with regular exercise.

There is a slight improvement but feel need more treatment and aftercare was not good

I was given very strong painkillers- without sufficient background information as to risks/how long I should take these for and crucially without any stomach protecting medication which I later found out (after consulting other doctors) would need to be prescribed as a standard.

I saw Mr Akmal about two bulging discs.
He suggested injections as a first course of action and if those did not work to replace two discs.
He seemed quiet flippant about what is major surgery and down played any possible risks to such an extent that I lost confidence.

I'd been in a car accident and had over two years of exams, tests and opinions. Was still in agony and begging for a second opinion. Got to see Mr Akmal, he just watched me sit down, diagnosed me - correctly! - and I finally got the treatment I needed. I was so grateful and highly recommend him.

Dr Akmal seemed knowledgeable enough but was grumpy and dismissive and rushed me in and out in minutes without addressing concerns and worries I had. Having the luxury of choice I switched to another consultant with considerably more empathy. Would struggle to recommend.

Dr. Mo Akmal is one of the best consultants who has an excellent diagnosis. I was on crutches but he motivated me alot and helped me to rehabilitate. I had a disk prolapse in L5-S1 region and he gave me spinal injection which helped. I recommend very highly about his diagnosis and treatment.

I would recommend the London Spine Unit to everybody. They treated me with a lot of care and made sure that my individual needs and condition was treated in the best way possible, as well as with a personalised plan/treatment going forward.

I have had a very good experience with Mr. Mo Akmal. He performed a microdiscectomy on my L4/5 disc and I am extremely satisfied by the recovery with almost all pain symptoms disappearing. The surgeon gave very good advice regarding the surgery and was very accomodating regarding the date given to me for the operation.

After suffering years of painful back, I was recommended Mr. Mo Akmal. After an initial consultation, I had a short procedure. Mr. Akmal said the pain can return after 6 months. 5 years down the line, I am still pain free! Thank you Mr. Akmal.

After a few years of differing diagnosis and treatment solutions from a number of doctors and surgeons I was finally relieved to be in the hands of Mo Akmal and his colleagues.
Although the initial operation did not fix all my issues, which may have been disguised by multiple sources of pain, I think that I am on a good road to recovery.
The msot important issue, apart from the proven skills of the team, had been the clarity of the analysis, the options available and finally trusted recommendations.
