I consider my self extremely lucky to have chosen lsu and Dr Akmal while searching for the right spinal surgeon on the net , I suffered from sciatica and herniated disc for a couple of years and was not able to walk at all when I decided to see Dr Akmal , it was straight forward consultation ,advice, reassurance and microdiscectomy all in less than a month

everything went nice and smooth ,I was pain free one hour after surgery and walking freely the day after , it was magic ,my only regret is that I should have done this months ago

I do recommend LSU and Dr Akmal for spinal surgery and will never thank him enough for the new life he gave me

On July 27th of this year, Mr. Mo Akmal at the London Spine Unit preformed a decompression and stabilization operation to address my 12 years of spinal stenosis degeneration. I am now 7 weeks post surgery and virtually pain free. My posture is normal, I’m able to get a proper nights sleep and I am walking two miles per day. I honestly feel like its been a miracle. Mr. Akmal treated me holistically in the most caring and professional manner imaginable with the least invasive approach being applied to my medical condition. Truly remarkable and one-of-a- kind. I had in July L4/5 Lumber Decompression keyhole surgery with a stabiliser inserted. This was done at the London Spine Unit by a wonderful gifted surgeon Mr Mo Akmal. On the same day of my first appointment with Mr Akmal I was able to have an MRI, and diagnosis.
After suffering years of lower back pain and right leg weakness due to sciatica which eventually caused trapped nerves that put me at times in a wheelchair because I was unable to stand for long with the pain. I had tried all the usual complimentary medicines, chiropractors, Osteopaths, but nothing worked and I just got worse as time went on, that is until I found the London Spine Unit and Mo Akmal
I found in Mr Akmal a man who was committed, sympathetic, and who answered all my questions putting me at ease.

i have just reach six months since my spinal fusion. would have to say i received first class treatment all the way through from diagnosis to the operation. after suffering with back pain for nearly a year i went to London Spine Unit for a second opinion. i had scans and diagnosis all in the same day which is so amazing as you come away knowing what is wrong and also the treatments that are available to you. i was told i had severe degeneration of the discs and the first option was to try injections of which i had within a week. this did help to certain degree and then the symptoms crept back and they offered my denervation which really didn't do much to help and my walking got very difficult. i was twisting badly and every day life was getting very difficult. as a last resort they offered the Spinal Fusion which i have to say was amazing. i had this done in the Spinal Unit and within hours was walking with a frame and then discharged by 7pm. we stayed at a hotel nearby for two days and then did a 4 hour journey home after that. i could walk straight, straight away. after two weeks i no longer had to take the strong painkillers any more. i would have to say i did have a lot of pain for the first fortnight, but after that it was manageable. i would recommend Mo Akmal and his team for anyone that needs a spinal fusion.

I was able to watch the entire process from consultation, pre op, surgery and post op. I was most impressed with the capabilities of Mr. Akmal and his team to be able to perform spinal surgery as a day case. Being a medical student having seen patient recovery after such procedures elsewhere, it was unbelievable to see patients walking by themselves and feeling all of their clinical symptoms relieved just a few hours after surgery.

Overall, seeing such a high standard of treatment and patient care throughout all stages of the process has truly inspired me and taught me a lot for the future.

I have been suffering from severe back and left leg pain and weakness for 9 months. At my age, I cannot afford to be off my feet for very long. My left leg muscles were wasting away and the severe pain meant I have been on heavy duty painkillers which made me feel drowsy and light headed. Mr Akmal and his team have been fantastic, unlike the previous doctors that I visited. He immediately identified the disc problem and explained in detail the condition and options of treatment.
He suggested trying simpler methods rather than rushing into surgery. I had my spinal injection which had an immediate impact. The procedure was pain free and the after care has been amazing. I have no pain and my strength and muscles are improving. I am back gardening and walking pain free. The staff at the London Spine Unit were so caring and friendly. The clinic was pleasant and completely unlike the other hospitals that I had previously been treated.
I cannot thank Mr Akmal and his team more for such wonderful and attentive care. He really does care about his patients and since the procedure he has kept in touch to make sure I was improving.

I had spinal nerve decompression surgery and the insertion of a dynamic stablisation (Coflex) device in June 2023 and I just can't praise the staff at the London Spine Unit enough. The pre-op, op and post-op care I have received has been superb. The diagnosis was perfect, the advice I received about treatment options was balanced and clear and the surgery has resulted in a huge reduction in pain already, just 2 months on. Everyone there is highly skilled, friendly, patient and caring, with terrific nursing, medical and surgical care. I was nervous about the operation, but I had no need to be. The anaesthesia is terrific, with no wooziness or nausea afterwards, and the pain relief after the operation is excellent. I had some pain and discomfort for a few days after the op, but nothing that painkillers couldn't deal with easily. I was walking an hour after the operation and was mobile enough to take short walks the following day, building up distances over the next few weeks. If anyone reading this is suffering with sciatica pain from degenerating facet joints, spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebra) then don't hesitate to go to the London Spine Unit for treatment. It has literally changed my life.

Having had a terrible first experience of spinal fusion somewhere else with a poor outcome and crippling pain I saw Mr Akmal and knew within minutes of speaking to him I had found the right person. Not only is he extremely talented but he is honest, approachable and reassuring and his patients and their surgical are clearly of huge importance to him. The admin and nursing team are so warm and efficient. If only I had found him the first time.

I feel that I have my life back! A total of 7 years of back pain with last 3 years pain increasing and able to do less I finally managed to get an MRI scan which showed degenerative disc in L5 S1. No treatment options offered via NHS so I researched Consultants who may be able to help.
Mr Akmal at the London Spine Unit came up with degenerative disc one of his specialisms. I sent my scans and Mr Akmal explained all options. I did not feel pressured to have an operation at all. Written information sent on all options for me to make informed decision. I opted to have spinal fusion and although day case felt initially optimistic it is much better to be at home (or hotel overnight) than in a hospital bed. Keep moving is key to recovery.
All the staff I have met have been friendly and professional. Easy to contact and from initial contact to operation was just over 2 weeks - although I could have waited if I wanted to.
7 weeks on, I can now sleep at night with no pain, can bend and twist.

I saw Dr. Akmal for lower back pain. I've had the pain for 10+ years with spasms and sciatic pain during that time. I did tons of physio and all sorts of different exercises to try and build up the muscle, but I could never get far enough before a spasm would come along.

I had two rounds of the steroids and they did the trick in allowing me to keep working out consistently for 5 months! I built up the strength to hold up my spine and keep myself spasm free.

Dr. Akmal is really good in not just jumping to a fusion or other serious surgery. After looking at my MRI is said I'm not a candidate for those surgeries and that's the kind of thing you want to hear from a back surgeon! Honest feedback!

I couldn't be happier with the treatment and only wish I went years ago instead of thinking this is a last resort.

One negative, he's not exactly a people person so he typically didn't greet me before my procedures or see me afterward. It's a little strange but everyone else around him is super nice and caring so it made up for it. But, a note if you like a doctor to be super involved and take time with you then this isn't the doctor for you. If you can look past this knowing it may be the effective treatment for you, GO FOR IT!

Having suffered for 6 months going through the NHS, after having my MRI scan I decided to look at private options.

Mo Akmal he is my hero! The NHS gave me no hope whatsoever, I honestly thought I would have to deal with the fact that I couldnt stand up straight, or walk properly for atleast another year, being told 64 weeks average waiting time for an operation IF the NHS would let me have one.

Mr Akmal gave me an initial assessment over video call (I couldnt get to him so he accommodated a time that suited me and via video)

Immediately I was put at ease, Mr Akmal was 100% confident he could resolve my issues, with an extremely low risk. This was a run of the mill operation for him, he had even had it done himself, so I was taken aback and felt like my life would literally be sorted.

I was booked in for the operation within two weeks (A longer waiting time than normally due to holidays)

Honestly, money well spent, I have been transformed and getting better by the day. The team were excellent, I can not portray in words how transformative this operation was.

Mr Mo Akmal performed a cervical disk replacement for me about three months ago. This was done on an outpatient basis, which I found very effective, and I was grateful I was discharged on the same night to recover in the comfort of my own home.
The facilities at the London Spine Unit are impeccable and the clinic is run in a professional manner. Staff are all very respectful, compassionate and efficient.
Mr Akmal sought more conventional treatment options for me and only suggested invasive surgery when all traditional routes had been exhausted.
The surgery has been a great success and I have regained full strength in my right arm, which had been heavily impacted by the prolapsed disk. I have had regular check ups since, and the healing is progressing well.
I wholeheartedly recommend the facility and its staff. I felt in very safe hands.

I had been suffering from chronic lower back and right leg pain since October 2021. I had visited numerous chiropractors and osteopaths, I was eventually referred by my GP for an MRI Scan in October 2022, as I was unable to stand or walk for more then 60 seconds without excruciating pain. The MRI showed a huge disc bulge L5/S1 but also a deformity in my lower spine. I was referred by the NHS to a private consultant who told me I would need two major surgeries at the same time to correct this issue, which would cost £35k and also be quite high risk. As an extremely nervous patient, I thought it would be best to get a second opinion as I was absolutely terrified! I contacted the London Spine Unit and Dr. Mo Akmal, the miracle worker put me at ease from the first consultation and offered me a different solution in the form of a microdisectomy and decompression, less risk, better success rates, day surgery, This was a third of the price I was initially quoted by my previous Consultant. I self funded so this was an added bonus, although I would of paid anything at this point due to the amount of pain. I must admit I was a little unsure that everything cold be so simple, as I had been in pain for so long and had got to the point where I thought nothing would work. I woke up after my surgery and was on my feet within an hour and I felt like a new woman! No exaggeration, it felt truly like a miracle! The team and staff are excellent. It has been 3 weeks since my op and I am walking around as if I never had an issues. Big thanks to Dr. Akmal and Dr Locke for the excellent care and surgery and also a big thanks to Dr Khalil Ahmed the Anaesthetist and all other members of staff.
