Trying to tell Newham council of council tax change on their website was impossible. Website full of glitches and demands for irrelevant information. Shockingly bad experience. Resorted to phoning, expected very long queue only to find a fully automated system that kept pushing me back to using the malfunctioning website. Britain in 2026 I’m utterly sick of it.
Unable to get through by telephone
Rang with a query and went round in a recognition loop several times before the automated system terminated the call. Impossible to speak to customer service about Council Tax.

I honestly don’t know another borough that ignores correspondence to this extent. Contacting Newham Council is almost impossible. Emails go unanswered, follow-ups are ignored, and residents are left chasing basic services with no clear route to resolution.
There is a very obvious two-tier system within the borough. Areas like Stratford City are spotless and well-maintained, and residents there clearly receive a consistent level of service. However, if you live outside those zones, particularly around East Ham and surrounding areas, you are largely on your own.
In some parts of the borough, rubbish is not collected properly and roads are visibly scattered with litter for long periods of time. This isn’t occasional neglect, it feels ongoing and systemic.
Newham residents deserve equal treatment regardless of postcode. Basic services like waste collection, street cleaning, and responding to residents should not depend on whether an area is seen as high-profile or profitable.

When you finally, by some miracle, get into the queue to talk to someone, it's a wait of over an hour and a half, if you are lucky. I sent an email a week ago and had no response, so I had to call as the matter was urgent and was asked to call back with information.

This council is absolutely terrible. I’ve spent hours on the phone waiting, unable to reach anyone. Their website is also very inflexible, making it extremely frustrating to resolve any issues.

I wouldn’t even give this council a 1 star if I could, they are actual thieves. If the money they raised targeting residents was used on services then maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. I am so glad I don’t live there anymore but still have to go to visit family.
Newham Council behaves in immoral ways.
Newham Borough Council does not deserve even 1 star. They had a system to enable visitors to park. Residents filled out a yellow card and it was to be displayed in the vehicle windscreen. The cards were very expensive but the system worked. Now they have a smartphone app. Great in theory if you have a smartphone. I anticipated problems so I tried to get it working a few days before my tradesman was due to visiit. I couldn't get it to work. I phoned the company that administers the app. The helpful lady needed to get into my account. She said it was now OK. It wasn't. I spent ages trying to get it to work. No luck. So I tried my computer. That took about an hour. I thought it had worked but the tradesman got a parking ticket. So now instead of one transaction per year buying cards I now have to try to get the system to work every time I have a visitor. It gets worse, the cards are no longer valid and the council is not providing refunds. I regard this as immoral.

Can't stand to give 1 star. Anyway every blood year I have to suffer, because Newham council can control residents who want to live on a rubbish dump site. For 3 weeks I've been living with Rats in my Kitchen. You know the problem, so why not fix it. Decent residents are not important. We must shut up and put up. I can't just move. Newham council is an absolute disgrace. Incorrect council tax demands sent, no email address to contact them, constant mismanagement and poor communication.
After selling my flat in Newham two months ago I was delighted at the prospect of never having to deal with them again... And yet, despite filling in the online 'moving out' form and alerting them over the phone that I no longer owned a property in the area, I have just received another council tax demand from them! Which means I will have to spend two hours on hold to explain ONCE AGAIN over the phone that I no longer own a property there. Shockingly inept
