State Insurance made the entire claims experience incredibly easy. I filed my broken glass/ranchslider claim online and was kept updated throughout. The best part — the reimbursement hit my bank account only three days after submitting the claim. Really impressed with how efficient and user‑friendly the process was.

DO NOT USE STATE!! NOT PAYING OUT CLAIMS!!

DO NOT USE STATE!! Shouldn't even be given 1 star. Hopeless, Incredibly Annoying and Extremely Frustrating!! Submitted on JANUARY 30, 2026 all my receipts and doctor/emergency visits documentation for dog attack with three bites, requiring 14 stitches, daily bandaging ongoing (which my claim $ are needed to fund, and this I told State) Anyway, zero money received back, it now April 13, 2026... 2 and 1/2 months later, they state "10 days" to finalise claims. 10 days have now passed 10 times. Imagine if you were in hospital and this is the treatment your travel insurance is giving you?!! Have filed with IFSO on February 23, still no result from State. INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATED!! DO NOT USE!!

Have been with them for almost 10 years…

Have been with them for almost 10 years paying comprehensive for my cars. Never had a claim.
I’ve now put in an attempted theft claim and it has been a horrible experience. The first woman I spoke with had everything wrong, my car was left on the side of the road so had to call again and finally managed to get a tow truck. They’ve towed it to a town where I don’t live, but I also had no contact or no update and had to figure it out for myself what was happening with my car.
It’s been a week and after calling the company that has my car daily, I’ve been told they haven’t even looked at it. They’re now asking me to travel 2 hours (without a car or bus route), to come in and fill out a form so they can even look at my car. Would you not tell me this on the first day you received the car? Does state not provide my details? Why is this even part of it.
I told the company I could come tomorrow to fill the form out and the response was “nah it’s raining, none of us want to get wet and I’m sure you don’t either”. So am I supposed to sit around and let my car rot in a car yard? What am I supposed to do? This is insane and I will never use state again. I will make it my mission to tell everyone to never use state again.

Claim decision reversed until IFSO intervened

I was involved in a hit-and-run accident with a vehicle that did not have a valid WOF. When I first lodged my claim with State Insurance, they accepted the claim and waived my excess because the other driver appeared to be at fault.
However, about a month later they reversed their decision and informed me that I was responsible for the accident and would have to pay the excess. I disputed this decision for several months but their position did not change.
I eventually contacted the IFSO(Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman) Scheme for assistance. After IFSO asked State to review the case again, State agreed to waive my excess. However, they still refused to acknowledge any responsibility from the other driver.
The process took months and was extremely frustrating.

Should be zero stars

Should be zero stars, waited 45 minutes to talk to someone, she confirmed my contact details, said she will call back in a minute, didn't, wtf State, my claim for damaged glasses has taken 10 days and no response from you, we have been with State for many years and there service is the worst ever, seriously looking at changing insurance companies for all our needs

No loyalty

To be honest other insurance probably the same. However the difference is our home, car and contents insurance has been with state for over 10 years. They have changed in the last year including some policies.

Today we called. I asked a difficult question and was put on hold for 15 minutes before someone answered like it was a new caller.

I explained our whole claim story again, very long and difficult situation.

It is really clear State don't care about relationships and we will be looking to move if appropriate exists.

A new policy was slid in last year which means when your car is written up, not only is the insurance policy cancelled immediately (this is fine) but as well as cancelling they charge you for the remainder of the year.

We requested flexibility on 3 cases with 3 different things, including me offering to help with scraping and to no avail. No flexibility, all 1 way.

Awful to no customer service.

I have been wanting my excess understandably it would take time but was lied too and bs time after time on the 23rd December someone told me they had deposited my excess only to find put 2 weeks later NOTHING it was a lie. Aradna and Rahul especially Aradna was the only woman being honest with me and helped me after I wanted to speak to their manager. It concerns me that we entrust State with our lives only to be given the ringer. State are in a State!

Absolute insanity

Absolute insanity - my sons tyre fell off while driving, probably due to previous mechanic - weeks of back and forth, them asking us to provide a replacement tyre, to them saying they can't find one, to they would find one, then they would cover all 4 wheels and then only one - ended up with the spare tyre on it, they did one rear brake pad so the car is uneven and then charged him 1150 excess, for installing his spare tyre and one brake pad!! WTH!! absolutely terrible communication. will never use these guys again!!

The worst
No photos or proof of the claim of the car my husband didn’t even hit it it just happened to touched by the tow bar yet claim 3k over for it and they don’t have any proof of car damages coz there was no damage n the lady name Dani Wilson she’s the most annoying rude n think she’s all that didn’t even want to handle the situation she just want money

One phone call to claim on nose to tail…

One phone call to claim on nose to tail collision on My Car, Someone rear ended My Car. Sorted it out on the spot with State Insurance. Prompt follow up with Motor Hub repairer, took only two business days to complete repairs, as parts replaced. Loan Car supplied ,clean, modern Hybrid Car. State Insurance delivered, when it mattered, no fuss, Top Service,from HELEN CHEN. I was previously with Tower Insurance for many years. Got A quote from State that included A $100 Prezzy card.

worst experience

This has been my worst experience with an insurance company. The claim process was confusing, customer service was unhelpful, and I had to chase them multiple times for updates. I felt like my concerns didn’t matter to them at all.”
I’ve been waiting almost 10 days for my claim, and they still say it’s processing.

Outstandingly SHOCKING service

Outstandingly SHOCKING service, processes and handling of claims. Week 6 and still no claim completion.
No communication, ignored requests to escalate the matter further and made a bad situation worse. I would never ever insure with these clowns again.

HIDDEN SCAMMERS

I took a content insurance from them. They denied my first claim for the reason that the content was more than 5 years old. When I first called them and spoke to a representative to check the quote, I wasn’t made aware of this condition.
So Eventually, the entire premium that I was paying has gone to waste. I will never go back to this company. I’d rather pay a higher amount and get an honest insurance company.
People, please don’t fall in their ‘weekly payment’ trap. Such companies should be reported to the government.

Refund Quickly Given

Like an idiot, when moving from NZ to London - and having sold my car - I forgot to cancel my direct debit for my car insurance :-( So, I called State from London, and spoke to a super-helpful guy named Matt, who with no fuss cancelled the direct debit and refunded the money that I had accidentally paid since June, when I moved. Thanks for a swift, easy, and compassionate response State! I'll be using you again :-)

Shocking Service

Shocking Service!
I drive a 2005 Daihatsu Hijet. Insured for private use, full comprehensive. I used this vehicle just to drive to work and back. Cost to do this $764 per year.

Last week I moved this vehicle over to my company as a commuter and to use as a little delivery truck. Moving all sorts of stuff. Way more risk to it being damaged or getting in an accident. Cost $668 per year.

Calling to cancel my Policy, the guy couldn't even speak proper English.

I will call in tomorrow to cancel my other 2 Policies with them.

People, shop around. And don't always trust the big names.

My review comes not as a customer but as an affected party.

My review comes not as a customer, but rather as a person having to deal with State after one of their customers backed into our car, Our car was parked in front of our house (and we were nowhere near the car). Driver admitted 100% fault but State still wanted to pressure me to claim on my insurance. The representative talked over the top of me and proceeded to bully his way through the conversation. When asked for his name he initially just gave just his first name. I pressed for his surname and asked if the conversation was being recorded - Date and time of conversation recorded, Insurance council here I came if it’s not settled accordingly. Numerous people I have talked to have suggested that the IAG group are not the easiest to deal with. I will be checking who I’m with and will be moving companies if they have anything to do with IAG
