A terrible business decision to use…
A terrible business decision to use Vail Williams in relation to a new Business Rates listing.
I first contacted Vail Williams in April 2019. We had been given an initial assessment by the VO of £39,000 but there were a number of reasons why this was too high. One of their “experts” did a site survey, made various mutterings as to why the VO was incorrect, assured me he would be able to sort things out but obviously there was a lot of of specialised work involved. A good thing that we had contacted them and not to worry they were on our side.
With the benefit of hindsight the Vail Williams “business rates expert” made some schoolboy errors in his application to the VO mostly in relation to contiguous buildings. The net result was that our VO assessment of £35,000 now became 10 separate assessments totalling £54,000. An increase of nearly £20,000
Vail Williams now started to get a bit harder to contact, emails weren’t replied to, when they were the VO were blamed for various things and I felt like a mushroom, totally in the dark covered in muck. In September of 2019 I was invited to a Vail Williams client evening on HMS Belfast. I used the event to confront senior staff members who were keen to placate the situation and in so doing made lots of promises.
Fast forward to July 2021 and emails to Vail Williams are now simply ignored. I’m still faced with a £54,000 business rates bill which is made all the worse as the assessment has been backdated to 2017 meaning the extra £20,000 incurred by Vail Williams’ meddling is nearly £80,000 in actual terms.
I now face an uphill battle to sort out Vail Williams’ mess. It would have been much easier to just go in there myself initially or better still employ someone who knew what they were doing. Vail Williams discuss multi million pound properties as though they are routine and common place. From my experience I wouldn’t use them in relation to my garden shed.
