A fantastic experience!
I have an older diesel Honda CRV that had picked up a rattle / clatter between 900-1200rpm that proved very difficult to diagnose. I had consulted with other independent reputable specialists prior who inspected the engine, two of whom suggested the timing chain assembly needed replacement due to a suspected stretched chain. Another suggested a possible lateral cam issue but would need to remove the engine head to diagnose so couldn't give assurance until this investigation was complete.
A further mechanic had suggested that the sound did appear to originate from the middle of the engine, so agreed that the timing chain and/or associated parts could be problematic but would need to inspect to be certain.
To replace the timing chain assembly would be around £1,400 - £2,000 as an estimate.
At this stage I contacted Automek in East Kilbride, as having Honda specialism and requested pricing for a timing chain assembly. They queried the fault and didn't think this was the cause so I brought the car in to them for examination.
Andrew came out and within 10 minutes had diagnosed that the fault was originating from the EGR pipe area, not the timing area of the engine.
I booked it in and right enough, Andrew had correctly diagnosed and repaired damage that occurred between the EGR pipe and DPF. The cost of repair was a fraction of replacing the timing chain assembly. Automek saved me having to spend a huge amount of money to repair something that didn't need replacing.
The team also flushed out and resolved a problematic hydraulics system to resolve the squeaking clutch pedal where I'd been advised by others that my master clutch cylinder may need replacing - a terrific bonus.
They allegedly have a reputation for being sent the problems that others can't figure out which I don't doubt based on my experience.
