Cornish Gems

Cornish Gems made booking a holiday an easy and stressfree experience. The property we had chosen, Trevanion Cottage in Coverack, truely was a 'Cornish Gem'. It was made warm and welcoming for our arrival and was spotlessly clean. The owners had left the most amazing welcome pack! Thank you to both the owners and the team at Cornish Gems for a wonderful holiday stay.

Barretts Zawn

We arrived at Barrett’s Zawn in the teeth of a south westerly gale. The property is very exposed, close to the south west coastal path . So on a good day the views are superb. Unfortunately, the house was very cold and unwelcoming.Central heating not on .Soon remedied, but it took a couple of hours to warm up , by which time the children were ready for bed. More woe, there was no hot water and no instructions to help remedy the situation. Several phone calls later and following a hunt for the hidden key we gained access to the boiler controls and managed to switch the hot water on ….too late for the children of course.(Barretts Zawn does not provide any Children’s toys by the way)
The following morning the dishwasher saga begins, when we are greeted by unwashed dishes in a pool of dirty water. More phone calls, lots of suggestions as to how to remedy the situation, none of which worked . So we resigned ourselves to washing dishes by hand . An engineer was dispatched but made no difference. Lots of valuable holiday time wasted.The dishwasher was eventually replaced as we left.Putting these unfortunate issues on one side, Barrett’s Zawn is a comfortable property in a unique position , but it does not live up to its marketing hype. The kitchen area is small and not so well equipped .The dining table is very utilitarian , and strangely screwed to the floor. The chairs provided are on a different level to the bench seating. Lovely to have an AGA but the extractor fan is inadequate . There are some comfortable sofas in the lounge area, but a rather odd set of bench seats beside the log burner , which serve no purpose. The beds are comfortable ( although some of the double duvets are past their best ) One of the radiators in the master bedroom is not working properly , and there were reports of a blocked sink in one of the other bedrooms. There is a small utility area on the ground floor with clothes washing facility , but limited drying area, and no external clothes line .
Thanks to Cornish Gems for your brave attempts to improve our experience.However, we are left with the view that Barrett’s Zawn was just not as prepared for our visit as we would have wished.

It is always unfortunate when an appliance fails, especially after having been checked and tested. I believe the owner did arrange for some items to be dropped in during your stay as a goodwill gesture in light of your experiences. The dishwasher in question has now been replaced, although we recognise that this was not possible during your time at the property.
We have taken your comments regarding the property to our property standards team. They will be looking into your comments as part of their standards check and will be making recommendations to the owner so that improvements can be made. A little disappointing

We have just returned from a visit to The Beach Barn, a property booked through Cornish Gems. We had stayed previously at the property when it first listed in 2018 and it was a perfect fit for a break. The booking process is simple, and we received a call confirming the booking.

Having travelled 365 miles to reach the property, we were glad to walk through the door. It looked as good as it did in 2018, extremely clean and well appointed. But this is where it goes a little off track.

When we arrived, there was no heating and it felt like there had been no heating for several days. As it was underfloor heating we tried to adjust the thermostat and thought it would just take a while to heat up. We waited until the next day, but it was extremely cold so we called Gems, but the person on the phone couldn't help and arranged a call back. Once we got a call, I we were asked to find the hidden key safe and get the management keys, enter a private area and flick the fuses not knowing what had cause the electrical issue.

Whilst this did the trick, we never heard anything else off Cornish Gems throughout our visit even though they say in their booking process they will give you a courtesy call after check in.

We experienced other issues whilst there, but we thought we would explain to them when the called. But they never did and still havent! Shortly after checkout the main party member got a feedback form, where they explained the issues, but we loved the property. We didn't make a call for any refunds, discounts or even complain officially.

So it was a little disappointing to then receive an email about the feedback that basically just said sorry. We know we should have called you, but we didn't? And that we should have called them to allow them to try and correct the issues. My expectations were after leaving feedback -Were sorry about the issue we will send someone to look into it. Not if had you called us we would have fixed things, if that would have been the case why did you expect a guest to go into a private area and mess with the fuse box.

Now in fairness to all, maybe we should have called them with the issues rather than wait for the courtesy call from them but they do state they will make a courtesy call as mentioned in their booking confirmation. Having just spent two years looking after someone with dementia we just wanted a simple hassle free break and didn't want to make a big thing out of everything.

Cornish Gems shine with their list of properties, and I will say that this is the cleanest holiday rental I have ever stayed at. And as well appointed as the inside of the property was, the lack of attention outside was really disappointing.

No Heating for 24 hours, Extractor fan in bathrooms not working, Finding external doors left unlocked, the patio area to the hot tub and around the hot tub was muddy and dirty ( Yet a USP of their property is the garden and hot tub). It was so muddy, we used the hose pipe to clean it so that we didn't walk it into the property. The hot tub itself has jet covers missing, decorative and front panels missing).

The also failed to mention that two properties opposite are being redeveloped, so I was a little shocked to have a strange builder stood in front of the bedroom window at 8.30am on a Sunday morning.

Would I use Cornish Gems property again, probably. They have the best range of properties and on both occasions of using Gems their properties have been spotless.

But rather than a dismissive and brush off email to feedback you asked for, a call or generic response may have been better. You can't apologise and then say but you should have called us.

excellent holiday

A great experience

The property was wonderfully situated next ti the sea with excellent views. It was beautifully presented, nicely furnished and well equipped.

Cornish Gems were an excellent booking agency who were incredibly attentive and kept in contact with us making sure that our stay was pleasant.

We were sad to leave the property.

First time renting through Cornish Gems and not disappointed! A very helpful, personal experience.
And the property did not disappoint either... it lived up to the website description, which is not always the case.
I will certainly use this company in future.

This was our second booking with…

This was our second booking with Cornish Gems, easy booking system which gives excellent descriptions of the properties and photographs, which when you are arrive are per the website description and photographs are true reflections.
The highest standard of properties given we choose Dog Friendly stays.
How wonderful to find such a great company, we will be booking again.
Highly recommend.

We stayed in Tredinnick Dairy for Christmas. The cottage is very lovely and extremely well equipped. V v comfortable. And v v clean. Very nice to have the check in call. We had a very good experience.

Had a wonderful weekend at Ilha View

Had a wonderful weekend at Ilha View, great house, very spacious and comfortable with lovely views of Looe Island, good outside space. Walkable into Looe harbour in about 15- 20 minutes. A little cafe called The Lookout do fab lunches. Really good base for exploring East Cornwall, Polperro, Talland Bay very pretty.

Glas Mor (Mousehole)
Super location overlooking Mousehole harbour and a comfortable cottage. However, we were disappointed with the cleanliness of the cottage, plus one or two maintenance issues to the property needed (broken toilet seat etc). Aga style cooker was great but no provision of oven gloves (despite the property H&S assessment suggesting otherwise) - this was reported when we received the courtesy ‘welcome call’ from Cornish Gems and assurance given that they would rectify this at the start of the week. No further contact was received from Cornish Gems so it’s apparent their courtesy calls actually have very little substance!
Despite the cleanliness issue, no oven gloves and some maintenance needed to the cottage we did enjoy our holiday.

I am sorry that I have been unable to reach you on the phone. We are of course very sorry to hear of your disappointment but so glad to hear that you did enjoy your time in the county.
I must apologise for the lack of follow up after you reported the missing oven gloves, this is not the level of service we aim for. Having looked into this, I can see that we did notify the owner's housekeeping team of the missing items, however we should have checked in with you again during your stay to make sure that this issue had been resolved, especially when it comes to health and safety concerns.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I have gone over our procedure for tracking guest issues with the team and I hope that this will ensure guest issues can be resolved quickly and that we do not presume issues to have been resolved in the future.
We do hope to welcome you back to Cornwall again in the future, having stayed with us on 3 occasions you would now qualify for our repeat guest discount so be sure to mention this to our travel advisors when booking.

Wonderful property with an amazing view, Water's Edge in StIves, Cornish Gems very easy to deal with and very helpful (we had a flat battery in the car and they kindly came out to help us with a jump start)

Talland View, St Ives

Dear Sirs

We wanted to provide some feedback on our recent stay (10-17 Sept 2022) at Talland View with Cornish Gems.

On initial review on the property on arrival we wondered when the property had been used last due to the level of dust on surfaces and cobwebs present in the lounge. The cleanliness is not up to the standards we are used to, please see attached images showing dust on surfaces, blinds and visible hairs etc on the floors and 'clean' bedding once the green fleece had been removed.

We were also very disappointed to experience noise and disturbance from the building work going on next door, especially as we had taken the time to call prior to booking to enquire about the note on the property about building work. We were assured that there had been no negative feedback about the building or noise and that the vehicles would only be using the the road for access. We question again when was the property last used as on several mornings we were woken shortly after 7am to lorries arriving before the site was open and parking outside the flats, engine's running, music playing. delivering building equipment and scaffolding. We also experienced drilling and general building noises, again after being told we would not hear any drilling noise. We ended up sleeping with the windows closed to minimise the disturbance but with the return of warm weather during our stay this was not ideal. Given this level of disturbance to what we had expected to be a relaxing holiday, we would have expected the property to have been heavily discounted. Have Cornish Gems themselves visited the property in recent months?

The Guidebook on the property stated specific instructions of when and where the rubbish needed to be left, what wasn't included was the code to access the area for the rubbish bins. Instead the instructions said that we would receive a message with the code, this did not come and instead we had to contact the emergency number requesting it. A message was left saying they were trying to find the code.... Surely this should be information easily available and we certainly shouldn't have to go out of our way to chase for this. I ended up having to taken the rubbish out in the rain and dark due to when I finally received the code.

We do not generally like to complain but given we have received an email asking for feedback we felt we should share our experience. Sadly our first experience of Cornish Gems has not been all positive which is a shame and it will unfortunately make us consider whether to use the service again.

Many thanks for taking the time to share your recent experience. We would always try to make guests aware of any building works that may impact our guest's enjoyment of a property. Having checked our records I can see that we didn't have any complaints about the building works prior to your arrival, and the property was occupied constantly throughout the summer. We do however appreciate that your experience does not seem to have matched the experience of these other bookings. Our team visits this property on every changeover so we were sorry to hear of these cleanliness concerns identified on arrival, and will be bringing this up with the cleaning team as neither of our expectations have been met in this regard. Had we been made aware of your concerns with the cleanliness and disturbances during your stay we would have done all that was within our abilities to rectify this for you.
We must apologise for the issue with the bin store code. It does seem that the bin store requiring a code for entrance was a new addition that occurred in the middle of your stay (12th September), our apologies that we did not pre-warn you of this addition as soon as it occurred.
In light of your experiences I have initiated our complaints procedure and we will be in touch with you directly in due course.

Wavewatcher

We stayed at Wavewatcher for a week. The property is modern, clean and built/furnished to a high standard. Even better than the pictures. Great views across Perranporth and down to the beach, particularly from the master bedroom. We loved it and didn’t want to leave. Cornish Gems made it easy to book, provided a great welcome pack and were always on hand to answer any questions.

St Ives Bay Penthouse - Not recommended

We recently stayed at St Ives Bay Penthouse and cannot stress enough how disappointed we were with the property. We have used Cornish gems on a number of occasions and had great holidays but this place was well below those standards. Property still had loads of owners personal stuff in draws and cupboards. TV sometimes worked when you fiddled with the leads, the fridge couldn’t keep things cold in the daytime. No working TVs in the bedrooms, hallway full of bags etc so not usable for our storage which is quite vital on a seaside break etc etc etc.
