Horrible user experience which they blame on the customer to justify
Since PSI online, who run the service, are contracted through the Home Office, they can get essentially away with doing whatever they like to their customers and covering it by "Terms & Conditions". Their web form to book a Life in the UK test is largely unusable. I filled in my details CORRECTLY on the top of the form. At the bottom of the form, you are required by them to enter your postcode to find your nearest 5 test centers. Choosing my postcode overrode my place of birth at the top of the form to "LONDON". I didn't notice this (how would I have?) so continued filling out the form & went on to the payment section. There was no place to review my details before submitting the form, and there was no place to review the specific detail which was incorrect after submitting the form. I had no way of knowing that their system had overwritten my place of birth until I turned up for the test and was turned away due to my place of birth not being correct. They made it clear I would not get a refund, and would have to pay the £50 again and book a new test date. After a lot of back and forth via email, I was told not to contact them further as they would not consider issuing a refund, as they take no responsibility for their registration form. Raising a chargeback through my bank was of no help either as they are apparently unable to question companies working with the Home Office. I was able to get a refund on a technicality because American Express actually care about their customers, but that came out of their pockets, with no repercussions for this company. It's not right that they can get away with providing an experience where it's impossible for a customer to verify their details, & then put all the blame on the customer when a detail is incorrect. As far as I'm concerned, they stole £50 from me--nobody would use this system if they weren't forced to by the Home Office. And no other company would get away with treating their customers this way. I hope the Home Office break their contract with this company once their contract is up.
