At the RSPCA, we’re proud to be there for every kind— from pets in need to wild animals who need urgent care. Every day, our dedicated teams work tirelessly to protect animals, prevent cruelty, and offer hope in situations that are often distressing and complex. As a charity, we face difficult decisions about how to use our limited resources, and we must prioritise the most urgent and serious cases of abuse or neglect. This sometimes means we can’t attend every call, no matter how much we wish we could. When we’re unable to be there in person, we’ll help in other ways—offering you support, directing you to organisations that can help fast, and, when it’s safe, empowering you to take an animal to a vet. These shared efforts truly make a difference. We’re incredibly grateful for the kindness, patience, and support shown by the public. Together, we can continue to speak up for animals, protect those in need, and build a better world for every kind.

Volunteer dog walker

I have been a volunteer dog walker at the Birmingham Animal Centre, and prior to a change in the way it had to be done due to Covid, a pre adoption home visitor, for 27 years.
I love working with the dogs, and with the staff who are all so dedicated to the animals, so helpful to the volunteers, and show genuine appreciation for our help.

RSPCA Newbrook Farm

I first came to the RSPCA (Newbrook Farm) when I adopted my cats, Lemur in 2014 and Wotsit in 2020. Sadly, they have since both passed away and losing them has been incredibly hard. I was not quite ready to adopt again, but knew I still wanted to be involved with the RSPCA so I recently began fostering at Newbrook Farm and the support I’ve received from the team whilst fostering has been amazing. Whenever I’ve had a question, needed advice or just wanted a bit of reassurance, there has always been someone there to help. That support has made such a difference and has given me the confidence to keep fostering. I’m incredibly grateful to the RSPCA for bringing Lemur and Wotsit into my life and for giving me the opportunity to become a cat fosterer. I would wholeheartedly recommend the RSPCA to anyone thinking about adopting or fostering. The work they do for animals is so important, and I feel very lucky to now be a small part of it.

RSPCA has limited resources and it seems terrible that they can’t respond to every situation. But my experience of the people who work and volunteer there is that they care deeply for the animals who come into their shelters, often in very distressing situations. I have nothing but admiration for the Inspectors in particular.

Thank Goodness for the RSPCA

I've adopted from the RSPCA and had the opportunity to shadow an inspector. It's clear how much they care for the animals in their charge and for animals they are looking out for. The care staff and fosterers were so good with the kitties we have adopted. They truly care about the cats and who they are rehomed to. I could never do the inspectors' job. They see so much misery yet they are constrained by the laws of the land which means at times they can't do what they'd like to for animals in need. When they are able to, they take the necessary steps to help. I applaud the RSPCA for everything they do to help animals.

Hi Jess

Thank you so much for telling us about your experience of adopting your cats from the RSPCA. We’re so glad to hear how pleased you were with the adoption process and the care taken to ensure it went smoothly. We wish you many years of happiness with your furry friends.

Yes, our dedicated frontline officers have heavy workloads and travel wide areas to get to as many jobs as they can in their working day. They have no more legal powers than any other member of the public, so rely on their understanding and knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to try getting improvements for animals. Most often, these are then made in cooperation with the owners acting on officers’ advice.

A fabulous, dedicated charity focussed on the needs of animals and excellent to volunteer with

First I adopted a cat from our local RSPCA and was really impressed with the attention to detail of the adoption process and the focus on the animal needs as well as our situation and what we were looking for and what we could offer. We have a wonderful new family member now, our cat Sky. I then became an online volunteer and find it a brilliant experience in which I feel I am supporting an excellent organisation dedicated to makiing life better for all animals. Additionally there is great support and communication with us volunteers and it has added extra interest and focus to my week.

I have reported a kennel I volunteered at to the RSPCA due to dog welfare concerns. They were quick to respond and although they couldn't share the full details with me, they did assure me they have investigated concerns, taken some action and were monitoring the kennel's implementation of their recommended improvements. They cannot attend every animal incident as they do not have many officers, especially in Wales and I respect they are doing all they can.

Hello Beth

We’re very grateful for your feedback and understanding.

As you’re aware, we’re limited by data protection law and the need for confidentiality in what we can tell people about the work our officers do. We understand how frustrating that can be for animal lovers, but releasing information could prejudice future prosecutions or lead to us being fined.

There are around 330 RSPCA officers spread across England and Wales who have busy workloads and they cover wide areas of the countries. So as you say, sadly they can’t attend every report we receive (nearly a million calls and quarter of a million online reports yearly), but they’re out 365 days a year getting to as many of those jobs as they possibly can.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us your positive review.

Many positive experiences

I've had a few experiences with the RSPCA - I've adopted two of my dogs from them, I've fundraised for them (my local shelter featured me in their newsletter to say thank you), and I've reported an injured deer to them.

With the latter, they attended the site, found the deer and explained the deer had a broken pelvis. Unfortunately this meant the deer wouldn't survive, so they did the kindest thing and put it to sleep. I was so very grateful for them doing that, and not leaving the deer to suffer.

The two dogs I've adopted from them have been an absolute joy. I was given lots of support from the shelter, and I felt they really took an interest in helping us. I've had so many positive experiences with the RSPCA, and although they can't help every animal without receiving more funding, our animals would be a lot worse off without them.

Thank you, Melanie, for leaving your review about the experiences you’ve had with the RSPCA. It’s great to hear that you’ve been able to give two RSPCA dogs a new home and that they’ve provided you with so much joy. Our centres work hard to find the perfect match for animals in their care when it comes to rehoming them. Some are rescued from situations which result in them having needs that may not always be obvious at first sight, so the centres are keen to support adopters and ensure things go smoothly.

It’s sad to hear that the deer was so badly hurt. Thank you for taking the time to get help for it. Every individual animal’s life matters to us, so the decision to humanely euthanase an animal is never an easy one to make, but sometimes it’s the right and responsible one.

With best wishes

Busy Campaigners

As well as overt "on the ground" operations, the RSPCA are forefront in raising awareness via online and social media campaigns, often targeting lesser known issues (such as the call to ban commercial greyhound racing in the UK, the dangers of excessive temperatures or the importance of highlighting health issues in certain companion animals, who have been bred purely for aesthetic purposes). I have been very impressed by the information provided (as all animal welfare matters are very close to my heart) and which have always been relayed in an impactful but tactful way in order to best educate the public.

Appalling lack of compassion and support from the RSPCA

My experience trying to help an injured baby deer on the A47 was deeply distressing and traumatic for both the animal and myself.
I found a frightened and limp baby deer by the roadside and immediately tried to do the right thing. After being bounced between 101 and 999 with the police failing to ever show up, I finally reached the RSPCA. Instead of receiving help, the call handler was completely rude and even laughed at me.
Even though I had pulled over with my hazard lights on to shield the deer from passing traffic, she complained that they were an hour away and told me to find a vet on a Sunday. When I pointed out that my job was to report the emergency and that coordinating help was supposed to be theirs, she brushed me off.
She transferred me to a vet who claimed they could not help because it was wildlife, and then asked me to pick up the injured baby deer and bring it in myself. I could not even do that because I had my dog in the car. Her final response was cold and incredibly upsetting. She stated that the deer would just have to stay the way it is and callousley mentioned something about utilising it, which clearly meant putting it down or leaving it to die.
It is heartbreaking that an organisation supposedly dedicated to animal welfare left a suffering animal to its fate while treating a concerned member of the public with utter contempt. I will never donate a single penny to the RSPCA again and I strongly advise everyone else to do the same.

Check local charities - they don't need cameras to work.

I would give them zero if the system would let me.

An organisation with over 152 million in donations each year, with extra from our taxes and a bit more from our taxes via Gift Aid, and they refused to go check on a 6 different reports about 2 people who eventually got prosecuted by the police for animal abuse and cruelty. Only took 3 rabbits, 6 dogs and god knows how many others to starve to death in the house before they bothered themselves, and only because the paper was present.

Two Old English Game Fowl bantams were abandoned, suffering pesticide poisoning and severe malnutrition, and the response was: "oh, we don't deal with abandoned animals". Even if they are severely at risk, and a possible risk to the public. They told me they always tell people to just ring the police for abandoned animals.

I'm sorting it myself, and making a local welfare charity called Cornforth Animal Welfare Society. Someone has to do something, as the RSPCA will not.
They show up when there's a camera, or if they think there's a rare breed or horse they could easily sell on.
