“Very disappointing experience with Tuscany Now & More”

We booked I Ruderi in Civitella d’Agliano through Tuscany Now & More and were extremely disappointed—not only with the property, but especially with the way Tuscany Now & More handled the problems we encountered.

The property was advertised by Tuscany Now & More as a “Fully air-conditioned villa.” When we arrived, the air conditioning was not working. The local agent came to the property but was unable to get it working. When we contacted Tuscany Now & More, we were essentially told that the air conditioning would not work if a door was open. No door was open.

Even more troubling, in a subsequent email Tuscany Now & More told us that the air conditioning had been turned on before our arrival. That was not our experience. The villa was stiflingly hot when we arrived.

There was also a significant issue that we feel Tuscany Now & More should have disclosed more clearly before booking. Access to one of the bedrooms required negotiating a very narrow spiral staircase. It would be difficult even for a much younger person and was particularly problematic for our group, all of whom are over 70.

The furnishings at I Ruderi were also quite dated and in need of updating, which was disappointing given how the property was presented.

What really distinguishes this experience, however, is Tuscany Now & More’s response to our complaints. We understand that things can occasionally go wrong with a rental property. What we expected from a professional rental company was an effort to acknowledge the problems, take responsibility, and work toward a reasonable solution.

Instead, we received explanations that did not correspond with what we experienced—for example, being told that the air conditioning had been operating before our arrival when the villa was clearly extremely hot when we arrived.

Our biggest disappointment is therefore with Tuscany Now & More, rather than simply with I Ruderi. We relied on the agency to accurately represent the property and to provide appropriate assistance when significant problems arose. We don’t feel that happened.

Based on our experience, we would never book through Tuscany Now & More again and would discourage others not to do so. We would encourage prospective customers to carefully verify the condition and accessibility of any property directly with the company, in writing, rather than relying solely on the agency’s description.

payments on-site at the villa were requested in cash, with unusually high amounts, and no invoices or formal receipts were provided. This raised concerns about transparency.

Used this company several times in the past and have been very happy. This time it was bad, the response from the company to our complaints totally unsatisfactory. The villa, L'Agrumeto dell'Isola in Monte Argentario, Tuscany is not honestly described on their website. It was very poorly maintained, some health and safety issues, particularly with the swimming pool. Poor lighting inside and out, garden overgrown, shrubs around the pool so overgrown that we couldn't get down the side of the pool, picture shows a bistro table and chairs beside the pool but the shrubs at the side of the pool meant there was no room, the ladder into the pool had the top step missing, so one of us could not even use the pool. Decking around the pool had raised screws and some decking was rotting. Whole pool area is very scruffy. Stained toilet pans, broken and raised floor tiles inside the villa, freestanding kitchen unit toppled onto our feet, no details of where fuse box is (electricity blew on first night), door from outside only opens half way so you headbutt it if not aware, website details state a path from garden to the beach - no such path exists. Website photo shows lighting at the pool - there is none. It also states a large deck area - it is very small and hazardous. Company hiding behind their booking conditions - i.e. advise them of any complaints whilst at the villa. They would not have been able to rectify the problems during our stay or find us another suitable villa, so this is nonsense. Very disappointed and won't use them again as we would not be able to trust their descriptions of their villas. This one is described as a simple but charming retreat. Charming and simple does not describe a poorly maintained property.
