Was scammed on the purchase of a flight…
Was scammed on the purchase of a flight on an online platform via credit card. Disputed the payment through Westpac Card Services for months with no helpful response. Finally told that I had to take it up with the merchant who never responds. Out of pocket over $2000, would never use Westpac Credit Card again.
Could Westpac be the most inept and revolting bank of all….YES
Visited the Riccarton Westfield branch today (Friday 27th March) to present Welfare Guardian and Property Manager paperwork in order to act for my Father and to receive statements for the court. My father has vascular dementia and I am his sole carer. Before entering the branch I had spoken to two customer service agents over phone to ask what was involved and what I would need to complete my tasks (ID, court papers etc etc) I was told it would be a simple task. As I have no license and my passport had expired I would need my birth certificate and another valid ID. No problem.
I checked again in the central city branch on Tuesday 24th of March to see if this information was correct and the customer representative stated that it was. She checked the court documents I had and said all was in order I just needed my birth certificate. Once found I headed to the fore mentioned Riccarton branch.
There I was met by rudeness, hostility and ineptitude. Firstly the first customer representative at the counter could not fathom my court papers and for over an 90 minutes she floundered and when she could not comprehend it I received no help or empathy from her only attitude.
She had also mistakenly pulled up another customers details (which she then detailed to me…address and other personal information) believing I had an account with the bank, when I had already stated I did not, only my father deemed to bank there, Once corrected she then began making phone calls and ignored me completely. When her calls were completed she asked for proof of address through a utility bill (when I was not told that I would have to provide that). I informed her I did not have a utility bill and she told me to bring one up on my iphone, I stated the obvious that my address was on the court papers provided. Annoyed she then took my papers and photocopied them (multiple times)
Clueless she then called another customer representative to consult with her. THIS customer representative (cough) was an old (hag) women who offered no assistance other than to tell me to remove my cap (which I had been wearing inside the bank since I entered) I did so and she proceeded to leer and scoff with her (cough) colleague.
Side note I have my own heath issues and am undergoing treatment causing my hair to thin.
When I informed the hag that my information had verified by another branch the supposed customer representative told me to “go back there then”.
When it was obvious no progress had been made a Manager called me in to her office. Where I sat for another 30 minutes. She was kind and empathic but absolutely no help and only repeated the process I had been through earlier (photocopying papers etc) She eventually informed me that I may need further papers from the court (when I had been told that everything was in order in another branch and over the phone)
I told her that the bank statements were needed before the 16th of April she assured me that she would put a rush on it and I would be her highest priority. I was then promised she would call me at 4pm to inform me of my status. Fed up I left.
4pm came and went,no call.
What can I do I followed both the court and Westpac instructions to the letter, I need those statements or I will face repercussions. Although not a customer Westpac should still provide me with customer service. They should also show humanity in difficult circumstances.
I have heard tales of how inept and revolting Westpac is and I now have proof. I am astonished at their unprofessionalism. I feel sorry for all those individuals that have to conduct business with them. If given a choice DO NOT BANK HERE, TELL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
Yet another sidenote when I entered the bank the customer in front of me was requesting to withdraw $48,000 in cash for gold and (cough) charity. He was a young man who they did not question. Although in my humble opinion they probably should have. No of course not…him they were more than happy to help.

Please avoid this bank at all means .I have closed all my long term investments and dealings with the Westpac Wanganui branch after having my eftpos card blocked by the reiginal Manager .
Being and investor and customer without any debts for over 30 years its not what I would call a creditable bank with any form of customer appreciation .My reccomendation is get out of this Bank as soon as you can . I have immediately opened investments & accounts with ANZ and KiwiBank ...which both offer very pleasant and user friendly services without the arrogance of the Westpac stratigey .
Sadly 1 star is way too mach for this shocking Bank .
ZERO if I could..
If you enjoy being gaslit by customer service, paying extra for outdated technology, and watching your money sit in limbo while "security" protocols are used as a weapon against you, then Westpac is the bank for you. For everyone else: run.
I have been trying to process a straightforward KiwiSaver transfer to my Australian Super, and the experience has been nothing short of a dumpster fire.
The "Groundhog Day" Support: I called seven times. Every single time, I was met with the same robotic script: "It will take X amount of days." No updates, no confirmation of what’s actually happening, and zero assurance that anyone is actually working on my file.
Weaponized Security Checks: On my eighth call, after providing the exact same security answers I’ve used successfully seven times prior, a staff member decided to "fail" my identification. It felt like a deliberate tactic to get me off the phone because they couldn't answer my questions. Now, I’m stuck in a "verification process" that is as convoluted as it is unnecessary.
Living in the Stone Age: In 2026, Westpac apparently hasn't discovered email. They refuse to accept digital documentation, forcing me to pay out of my own pocket to physically mail papers. It is slow, inefficient, and a blatant disregard for the customer's time and money.
Westpac is slow, outdated, and incredibly untrustworthy. Their systems are archaic, and their staff seem trained to stall rather than solve. They are happy to hold onto your money, but they will make it as painful as humanly possible for you to move it.
Save yourself the stress: Do not bank here.
Great Bank
Great Bank, Great Service, Great selection of Accounts from no fee Accounts to low/mid fees. Great App Great security. Since joining them i have been happy
In General lately awful services.
In General lately awful services.
Today I tried to gather information to receive an international transfer in USD and different information from Facebook team and call center over the phone. Attendant over the phone should be tested for ADHD.
Previously I had issues for approximately 45 days and someone pressed button on
Staff quality
I went to the kilbirnie branch today in the early afternoon. The Indian lady at the counter is incredibly rude and arrogant. She doesn't seem to be interested in her job at all. Such behavior is absolutely unacceptable. I'm sure a big institution like westpac can afford to employ better quality staff. I sincerely hope that the bank's management can look into the matter, before the reputation of the bank gets tarnished further and lose more customers. Personally, I will stop all dealings with Westpac as soon as I can.
Card got stolen
Card got stolen, Westpac handled the situation well and issued me a new card well before my flight to China.
Only negative is that they could not seem to get on the same page about how long things would take.
Dismissive Experience When Trying to Open an Account
I went into a Westpac branch intending to open a new account. While waiting in line, I was approached by a staff member who asked about the purpose of my visit. I explained that I wanted to open an account and mentioned that one reason was to receive foreign currency payments and exchange them.
The staff member told me I would not be able to open an account based on that reason alone. I clarified that foreign exchange was only one of several reasons I wanted the account, not the sole purpose. Despite this, she maintained that I would not be approved and did not appear open to reconsidering or discussing alternatives.
The interaction felt dismissive and based on an assumption rather than a full understanding of my needs. As no compromise or further explanation was offered, I eventually walked away. Overall, the experience was disappointing and not what I expected from a major bank.
Would not use westpac ever again.
In the time we've had a mortage with Westpak, maybe 2 years all up, we disliked every single interaction. Their bank app is hopeless, their call staff unhelpfull. Their rates always felt higher than everyone else and always slower to drop than anyone else.
We just always felt like Westpac was completely out of touch.
Useless.
If I could give them less than a star I absolutely would. ABSOLUTE WORST bank I've ever been with. They dont care about the people at all, and they seem to do whatever they want with your accounts. I had made a payment that was due in on a certain day. But out of every payment I've ever made they choose this one to leave on pending for about 5 days. I called so many times and nothing was done. They had no reason as to why they left it on pending. Just ridiculous.
Closing my account with no explanation…
Closing my account with no explanation just saying that transactions fall outside their 'risk appetite'. I have been overseas for 5 months and coming back in a week. Been a customer with them for 15 years. An explanation would be helpful. Looking forward to banking with a more ethical company anyway so their loss.
I rate them highly
I have been with Westpac for over 30 years. I have always found local branch staff and NZ phone operators to be very friendly and helpful. My only frustration is the restriction in opening hours at local branches. Yesterday their fraud team contacted me over charges on my credit card. They were very helpful and I appreciated it.
Terrible terrible
Terrible terrible, I cannot transfer between accounts and I have had to call a million times and it is still not fixed. It is a shit service - because I am getting charged rates for a service that is less than sub par
Daylight robbers
Won’t give me my refund sent by another company and don’t respond to messages. Bloody cheats gambling with other people’s money. It’s either that or they don’t have a clue what they’re doing. I am in the process of changing banks.
Do not trust this bank.
Westpac are a joke - avoid
Quite possibly the worst bank in the world. I would give zero stars if I could.
Arrogant staff
Arrogant staff. When I tried opening an account I was told by the staff member I cannot open an account because I had job and could not provide a proof of income. I had then file a complaint and explain that I have overseas income. I provide my overseas tax details. I was allowed the.open the account. A few months later I was contacted and reminded that the balance in the account was low. I was pressured into closing the account. The staff I delt with both at the branch on the phone are arrogant. The banking system with some banks like Westpac in New Zealand is messed up. There seems to be xenophophic attitude towards people overseas opening account at Westpac. There seems to be no control on staff behaviour at Westpac New Zealand. I have accounts with other banks in New Zealand and service is more polite.
I opened a Westpac account in Australia and the service was quick and fantastic.

Re: Comprehensive Home Insurance
To the point: AVOID this Insurer like the plague!! My regret, I did not do the due diligence before signing up.

Grossly incompetent
Whether it's dealing with chargebacks, additional cardholders, or my card getting blocked for fraud while traveling overseas with no notification and no path to easy resolution without calling... this is by far the worst customer service I've ever received in my 25+ years of banking across the US and NZ. I find myself frequently gobsmacked by the incompetence that would make a bank sit-com look like a tame documentary. Honestly, WTF?
