Claire Austin Hardy Plants is a specialist mail order plant nursery that's built it's reputation on supplying quality hardy perennials. The range spans everything from classic cottage garden favourites to more unusual specimens and includes hundreds of different varieties carefully selected for their garden performance. Decades of hands-on growing experience, propagating, trialing, testing and tending to plants has resulted in the knowledge that every plant we offer is worthy of it's place in the garden. We hold Plant Heritage National Collections of hybrid herbaceous peonies and bearded irises and have received numerous medals and awards at shows including gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The National Collections include hundreds of irises and peonies, including unusual varieties not commonly found in local garden centers or at other nurseries. Our careful, effective and secure delivery packaging using recyclable materials ensures the plants arrive in excellent condition and will thrive after planting. Did not expect such a bad quality
Did not expect such a bad quality from Claire Austin. 3 peony roots have been ordered, 2 came very small (very little dry roots approximately 6 cm) one of them Pastelegance for 125£. I could not believe my eyes when I opened the box. I’ve ordered peonies before from Dutch online shops in UK and they were much better and cheaper.

We were sorry to hear of your disappointment especially in relation to Peony 'Pastelelegance' which is a hard to come by and special peony. Peony roots vary in size by type and variety. The size of the roots supplied to you is, in our opinion as commercial growers for decades, in line with seasonal expectations.
It is unfortunate that you did not choose to return the peonies to us for a refund as offered. We didn't feel asking for the return of the order prior to issuing a refund was unreasonable when the value of the plants and rarity of varieties supplied was taken in to consideration. Peony collectors that had missed out on securing a Pastelegance due to the limited availability would have been delighted to receive your returned plant.
We hope the peonies have now been planted and will thrive, putting to rest your concerns as to the size and vigour of the healthy roots supplied . As a British, family owned nursery, peony lovers and holders of a Plant Heritage National Collection of hybrid herbaceous peonies we are saddened to hear your expectations weren't met. We hope that peonies form a part of the great enjoyment that can be derived from your garden in future.

Appreciated the email telling me when dispatched so had an idea when arriving.
Delivery was good.
Like the regular offers email- always beautifully photographed and tempting.
The catalogue is lovely too- great photos and descriptions.

As usual, Claire Austin produces excellent plants always in good condition on arrival. I welcome her emails advertising new plants but, sadly, can't always buy at whim as I would have nowhere to plant them!

Healthy, well established plants
The plants I ordered arrived very well packaged, in pots and modules to prevent soil loss in transit.
The plants themselves were very healthy and well established, with a good rootball, the compost was moist. Immediately planted out and they are thriving. The updates on despatch were very helpful and they arrived on the date promised. Wouldn't hesitate to order again.

Perfect plants, perfectly packed
It goes without saying that the quality and selection of plants from Claire Austin is outstanding. I started with a collection to fill a border, more recently I have returned again and again for specific plants. My latest purchase was for 6 Sanguisorba Officinalis. The beautiful healthy plants arrived within days of order and in perfect condition. Congratulations too, on the packing. The plants were completely protected with minimum wastage. Ie. The box was a perfect size and didn’t include or require masses of packing material and a trip to the recycling centre!

I have placed a few orders with Claire Austin. They are very quick at despatching on the whole and I really like the way they package the plants . It doesn't take ages to get them out of the box unlike one of their competitors.
The quality of the plants are really good too and not too small. Their planting information is also very good.

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Snowcap'
I ordered 3 x Leucanthemum x superbum 'Snowcap' in 9cm pots. They arrived well-packed with firm leaves and had been well-watered before dispatch. Although the plants were pot-bound, the tips of the roots were white, showing that they were growing well. No dead and rotting roots here!! After temporarily re-potting to 3-litre pots, they're looking good, and I'm well pleased with them.
