Great design but dark under current of discrimination

Excellent Platform but with a Sinister Undercurrent.
I’m an established therapist with 20+ years in mental health, and I’ve used It’s Complicated for several years. It’s a brilliant platform—intuitive, well-designed, and invaluable to my practice.
But beneath the slick surface, there’s a thinly veiled contempt for gay people.
Same-sex attracted people cannot choose to match with same-sex attracted therapists. Every other protected characteristic gets a filter—race, religion, neurodiversity—but not LGB. Instead, the platform forces users into the politically bloated acronym “LGBTQIA+”: a vague, catch-all label that now includes straight people who identify as “queer” for social clout.
LGB describes a specific minority: people who are not heterosexual. “TQIA+” includes heterosexuals. So LGBTQIA+ now means everyone—and same-sex attracted people have lost a distinct, visible category.
If a minority group can’t be named, it can’t be protected. And maybe that’s the point.
I’ve raised this issue multiple times. What I got was a masterclass in corporate gaslighting and evasion.
I asked for a conversation, I was ignored.
I asked them to define “queer.” They refused—probably because no one can. Yet we’re expected to have our identities bundled under a word no one can define.
They said “LGBTQIA+” is based on current clinical guidance. I asked for a source. Silence. Because there is none. They seem to have lied to make me stop asking inconvenient questions.
They said it was “policy”—but refused to provide the policy even though they are legally obliged to do so.
Eventually, I raised concerns that their system may be unlawful. Their response?
“We see no legal, ethical, or user experience basis for adding an LGB-only filter. You’re welcome to pursue any external remedies you consider appropriate. Our position is final.”
No justification. No dialogue. Just arrogance and PR-speak.
Every time I asked for clarity, I was stonewalled with the same word, repeated like a mantra:
INCLUSION. INCLUSION. INCLUSION.
They use it with cult like devotion in all correspondence, like they believe if they say it enough times they magically escape the inconvenience of Logic, reality and accountability. (If they comment on this review, I bet they‘ll use it).
I asked what “inclusion” actually means. They refused to answer. I doubt they even know. It just feels virtuous and righteous to say.
Let’s be clear: if the platform offered separate filters—LGB, T, and QIA—no one would be excluded. That would be more inclusive. The refusal to do this suggests that “inclusion” isn’t the goal—theres something else going on.
After six weeks of stonewalling, I followed their advice and escalated the issue to regulators.
Only then did they engage in anything close to conversation - now they MIGHT consider an LGB option—if they get feedback that it’s needed. But the platform has already erased us. You can’t get feedback from people you’ve made invisible.
They also said they’d consult “those most affected”—but who exactly do they think that is, if not same-sex attracted people?
We’ve been bundled in with straight people who’ve colonised our language for identity projects and branding. It’s Complicated isn’t giving that stolen ground back—not willingly.
And that’s what makes this so disappointing. The platform is excellent. But usability doesn’t excuse unethical design. They’ve chosen fashionable ideology over clarity, clinical integrity, and the rights of same-sex attracted people.
This reflects a broader, darker trend in mental health—where ideology overrides evidence and slogans replace reason.
It’s Complicated could be part of the way out of this darkness if they had the courage. But based on my experience, courage—along with self awareness and honesty—is something they severely lack.
Five stars for design. Minus several for ethics.
I’m posting this because people have a right to know what “LGBTQIA+” really means in practice.
(Spoiler: it doesn’t mean “same-sex attracted.”not anymore).

EDIT: See below for a case study in evasive progressive gibberish.

On first read, it sounds meaningful, but then read it again and, slowly, and try to pin down any coherent concept. It‘s just an EDI buzzword salad: ´complexity´, 'diversity'. `nuance', 'lived experience', ‘human connection‘ - emotionally loaded, vaguely warm sounding and utterly meaningless.
Text book emotional manipulation.
This is a performance, not communication - a sentimental shield designed to deflect critique and shut down dissent.
This is what I‘ve been trying to reason with - evasive deflection and strategic avoidance of clarity. Clear answers would require clear thinking, and that would reveal how naked the emperor is.

Hey Mark,

thank you for your review, and for acknowledging the value of our platform’s design.

We’re aware that identity language and categorization can raise strong opinions. At It’s Complicated, we’ve chosen to use the umbrella term LGBTQ+ in our identity filters as a way to reflect the diversity and complexity of gender and sexual identities within our community. While we understand that this framing may not align with everyone’s preference, it’s one we’ve arrived at thoughtfully and in consultation with clinicians and community members alike.

You’ve reached out to us on several occasions with concerns about this framework. We’ve taken your input seriously, and we’ve tried to engage in dialogue, even when our perspectives diverged. But ultimately, we’ve chosen not to adopt a more narrowly defined or exclusionary structure, as we believe that risks leaving out many people whose identities deserve recognition and respect.

We appreciate robust discussion, and we welcome constructive feedback, especially on matters as complex as identity and inclusion. But when critique crosses into personal attacks or begins to question the integrity of people’s identities or lived experience, we feel it’s important to hold a line.

We remain committed to fostering a platform that centers care, nuance, and human connection, and that will always involve learning, listening, and making space for complexity.

Warmly,
Johanne Schwensen

A refreshing approach to finding therapy - way better than other platforms

Starting therapy can feel incredibly overwhelming, but itscomplicated.life genuinely makes the process so much easier and helped me a lot. It's a much-needed change compared to some other well-known platforms out there...

While some services, like BetterHelp, might seem to simplify things, but there are also frequent concerns over therapist quality and a general feeling of being just another number in a system. I personally paid for almost a year of therapy on BetterHelp, and honestly, I felt it was mostly a waste of time and money. Over the past years, there have also been some scandals surrounding scummy practices such as significant data sharing and privacy concerns.

With itscomplicated, my experience has been entirely different. While I can't speak about the general quality of all therapists on the platform, looking at many profiles, they certainly appear professional and highly qualified. It was on their platform that I found a therapist that really helped me but I also appreciate that it's not a subscription model.

Their matching service is truly great. In my case, I received an answer quite quickly, and the response was incredibly kind and genuine. It absolutely did not feel like a robotic, templated message, which made a huge difference in feeling supported right from the start.

If you're looking for a more human, supportive, and privacy-conscious way to connect with a therapist, I highly recommend giving itscomplicated.life a try.

Jokes aside, thank you so much for this incredible review. We've shared it with the whole team, and it absolutely made our day. We're working very hard to build a platform that’s truly different from the likes of BetterHelp, so it means a lot to hear that this has come through in your experience. Thank you!

Bad platform

Bad platform! Bad customer sergvice! bad therapist! devastating experience!
Calender of availability not accurate!
No possibility of resetting password, cause you dont receive any email from them to do that!
bad customer serfvice that does not take responsibility or offer any solutions!
Therapist who set a time with you and never come and leave you waiting on a video call like a ghost without any notice!
poor competence and bad communications skills!
A platform bthat is supposed to help you but it s far from professional or ethic. Just gonna add you stress and disapointement.
better save time and money looking for some other platform. PS: dont trust the so many good reviews as anyone can pay for that nowadays!

Choose a therapist wisely

The idea and vision is great and the services necessary, BUT the professional background of most therapists makes this platform shady and unprofessional.
Someone who just has a degree in psychology doesn't have the skills nor background to coach and/or treat other people. Coming from someone, who is a psychologist and licenced clinician. And then there's these "Heilpraktiker" and other suspects.
Just make sure you chose someone with a proper clinical background (e.g. Psychologischer Psychotherapeut) and counseling competencies.

Hi Philip,

Thank you for your feedback. It’s great to hear that you like the idea and vision behind our platform! We truly appreciate your concerns about the quality and qualifications of our therapists. It’s true that not every therapist on It’s Complicated is a trained psychotherapist (Psychologischer Psychotherapeut).

While we fully acknowledge the education and experience of psychotherapists, we consider ourselves a very diverse platform. We believe that one doesn’t necessarily have to be a psychotherapist or a clinical psychologist to help others effectively. That’s why It’s Complicated is also open to other mental health professionals, including psychoanalysts, social workers, and coaches.

To join It’s Complicated, all therapists must be licensed psychologists, psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, counsellors, or coaches with either a master’s degree or equivalent (EQF level 7) and/or postgraduate training (minimum 2 years) in applied psychology. Every therapist is vetted by our onboarding team before they’re able to join our platform. Additionally, clients can see each therapist’s job title, education, training, and experience on their profile, ensuring transparency.

In short, while not every therapist on It’s Complicated is a psychotherapist or clinical psychologist, we believe this diversity is a strength, not a weakness. As a mental health professional yourself, you know that the most important factor in therapy is the therapeutic alliance: the relationship and fit between client and therapist. That’s what we strive to prioritize - finding the perfect match for every client, whether that’s a psychotherapist, psychologist, psychoanalyst, or coach.

We hope this helps clarify things, and thank you again for bringing this up. Please feel free to reach out to support@complicated.life if you have further questions or feedback. We’re always looking to improve our platform, and feedback like yours helps us do that.

Take care,
The It’s Complicated Team

This website has been of such great help to me

I have never written a Trustpilot review but I feel like I should this time.
I have had a quite messy journey with my trauma and therapists throughout my entire life. It's Complicated made it so so much easier to access international therapists with different areas of expertise. I also appreciate the option of free (or discounted) introductory sessions. Another positive would getting matched to a therapist by your team - one of those matches ended up looking like a pretty good fit and I worked with this therapist for a longer period of time.
The only issues I have experienced with the platform were occasional tech issues - sometimes I had to switch to Zoom mid session. There sure might be other things to improve too, but I have been very satisfied overall. Thank you.

Hallo Anouck!

I am a psychologist in the US. I found It's Complicated when searching for an organization that was dedicated to providing free therapy to victims of the Ukrainian war. a therapist as individual as you

It’s amazing because you can match with a therapist who really fits you and your problems! It’s even possible to find a therapist with the same religion or one that’s poc or lgbtq so you know they understand you and your struggles which also means they can support you better than just any therapist you’d find on the internet. You can see what kind of therapist they are, where they got training, what mental illnesses they might be specialized in and some even have videos where they introduce themselves. So it feels like you can get to know them before deciding to work with them which honestly takes away a lot of pressure and makes the experience that much more comfortable. And most therapists are very flexible so it’s easy to find dates for appointments!

Hey Hamsi!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. We really appreciate your feedback. Great to hear that you like the idea of our company and are happy with the quality of our service.

When it comes to the platform itself, we're aware that it's not perfect yet. We're still a small team, and recently we've focused more on the "frontend", working on a redesign of our directory and the matching programme, making finding the right therapist even easier. However, we know that some features you mentioned (like the video chat) require some work, and most of them are already on our product roadmap.

In fact, we've already been working on a new video solution in the last few weeks (currently in beta), and we'll launch it within the next days. This will significantly improve the quality and the UX of video calls for both clients and therapists. Once this is live, we'll tackle the next features such as booking and invoicing, hoping to become a more well-rounded platform every day!

Again, thanks for sharing this feedback, and I hope you still found the right therapist on It's Complicated. If you have further feedback or questions, feel free to reach out to support@complicated.life

Take care and have a great day,

Finally Found a Therapist

Finally Found a Therapist

I recently moved to Berlin and spent weeks searching for an English-speaking therapist. Securing therapy through the German public health insurance can be hard and frustrating, especially for an expat. Even if you manage to find a spot, the waiting period can extend for weeks or even months.

That's when I discovered It's Complicated. Here, I found a great therapist and was able to schedule an appointment within the same week. I can even choose between online or in-person sessions. While I do have to pay for the services, as they are not covered by public insurance, the quality of care I receive is exceptional. My therapist is fantastic, and I'm finally receiving the help I was seeking.

I've since recommended It's Complicated to several friends in similar situations, and they were all happy with their therapists. This platform has become a beacon of hope and support for those struggling to find quality mental health care in Berlin, particularly for the expat community. Thank you for your great work. Keep it up!
