May seem like a good idea but NO...

While it may seem like a good idea, the execution is severely lacking. As a landlord I wanted to offer this to tenants as a lower out of pocket barrier to entry to their move in costs. Shame on me for trying to be inclusive by way of an insurance company. The process for getting access to the security deposit is non-functional, as in their website does not process the information I am inputting and just gives me error message screens. And what terrible customer support to have no phone number that I can call! So now instead of just informing the tenant that they will not be getting their security deposit back, I am playing email tag with a random zendesk person. Awful user experience and I will never use this service again as a renter but especially as a landlord.

Usually have good experience but my last order was a disaster. I found a promo code on line and it allowed me to order it, apply the promo code but at checkout it rejected the promo code. I contacted customer service (not easy) and they said I couldn’t use it because it wasn’t on their website. I shared my frustration with them and was told a supervisor would follow back with me. They NEVER DID.

I ordered the item regardless and ordered it in silver color. It arrived and was a black finish. When I tried to return it, I was told that I would have to pay return postage…. I said this shouldn’t be the case as it was shipped in error by them. To date, I have not heard back. Every email I send gets an immediate AI generated response but nobody actually follows up.

Generally good products but wow has the customer service gotten terrible. Bottom line is I guess I am keeping something that I didn’t order but I will never order another item.

Not a Good Choice: Just Pay The Deposit.

100% designed to help property owners (mostly taking advantage of lower income individuals). They write feel-good slogans about how they're helping people afford housing... then they're taking a 100% anti-renter position in all claims. You can follow the letter of the law on a contract and they won't go against the landlord. Why? Because they need complexes to accept their policies. They deny too many claims, they'll get dropped. Don't do it.

ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE I have a balance of like $472 I was told that whenever I was ready to make the payment i would have to send an email to do so which I thought was bizarre because why not have an option where customers can pay you as soon as possible I emailed them to clear the balance 2 days ago and still haven't received a response but I did however receive a response asking me not to send so many emails because due to urgency I was pushing to get a response but nothing addressing what I was actually sending the emails for I've never had so many issues trying to pay a bill so yea never ever doing business with this company again

Rhino seems like a great idea…

Rhino seems like a great idea originally. It’s a replacement for needing to put a deposit down on a rental. Our monthly rent was $1480. Rhino only required I pay roughly $500 at first to start my lease. I lived at this address for 3 years and had to renew my lease 3 times. Each time I had to pay rhino more money. Now I have paid them a total of $1600. Now that I have moved out, that rental company is unfortunately a scam artists dream. They are claiming I owe them $3400 for “excessive wear and tear.” What they mean by this is that they had to repaint the home, and paid someone $2400 for paint. This claim is auto filed with rhino and the company does not care if you dispute it. You can try. They send an automated response to you about your legal obligations. So this puts me at owing $2790 to rhino to cover my initial deposit amount. I’ve already paid them $1600. But those were only premium fees and don’t apply towards your actual deposit. So I’m out of luck and owe rhino $2790 and the excess $500 to my rental company. THEN when you go to pay rhino your owed balance, the website isn’t user friendly at all. It gives you 4 options to pay it back- total balance, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months. If you try to pay the total balance, they charge you an $83 processing fee. SCAM. There’s a fee for every other option as well. I wanted to pay part of it upfront but it literally will not let you. It makes you choose a payment plan and then there’s no where on the website to even cancel the plan! They don’t have a live chat set up or a phone number. Just an email process that is useless. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! I wish I had known 3 years ago.

Bad UI, Worse Customer Experience

This is a company that very-much-so focuses on pleasing owners over tenants — fine. But in multiple instances, the team did not act in good faith.

I'll share the most recent example.

I left New York in 2023, and had an outstanding balance. I do not recall if I had paid any of that balance down shortly after leaving New York (which is obviously on me), but after the balance did go unpaid. That obviously also is on me.

But then 1.5 years went by.... no correspondence from either me or them on my outstanding balance.

However, just recently, I remembered that I likely had a balance to pay to them. So I reached out to them and asked them about it, in good faith with the intent to resolve any debt.

They indicated that I did.

I had been traveling out of the country and had not checked my email as much, then not 1.5 weeks later, they indicated that they were sending this to collection because they "hadn't heard from me"... despite them clearly forgetting I owed them anything at all until I reached out.

They do not act in good faith, and as a tenant, I'd recommend thoroughly rejecting any apartment company that seeks to work with them.

This was not the only instance where working with them was difficult — many such examples during my time as a tenant.

Do everything you can to avoid working with them.

Its a scam

Its a scam. Don't use it. You will have to keep paying monthly for the "insurance" plus they will charge you at the end for any "damages" anyway . Its like the landlords and this company are in cahoots to extort money out of the tenants. Better pay the upfront deposits.

This company is a bunch of crooks! Don’t get caught in their scam. They will find every way not for you to get your money back. I was being charged for two different security services. I reached out showing proof I was only living in one apartment. The landlord relocated me and my family. Come to find out without a lease agreement and taking my card information (without my consent) they were charging me for two security month deposits. PLEASE DONT USE THEM! Just save you money because if you have a problem you will be left in the dirt with them. I filed a complaint with BBB and if that doesn’t work I will file a small claims

I just recently vacated a rental home and left the home in excellent condition. I then receive a bill for $1250 for damages a month after I moved out. I sent them the 60 plus photos I took the day of move out and they are still trying to extort money out of me by in their words “cut a deal”. This is 100% a scam trying to take money from the consumer to offset their turn costs. They manually make up numbers and call them damages when they are actually normal wear and tear. 100% scam company and need a class action lawsuit brought against them for their fraudulent activities.

Cost and fine print

Used rhino for my security deposit because I didn't have the money to pay in full leasing office made it sound better anyway so they add it to my rent monthly my deposit was only 800 total I been at my complex 3 years and I'm still paying it for some reason with no explanation also they fail to tell you that the same 250 fee you have to pay to process it at the beginning you also have to pay again every 10 months and the fee goes up every year and it has to be paid every year that you stay or else you get a 10 day eviction notice also it's not to help or protect you like the landlord states it's to protect the complex company and landlords and they can still take your deposit that you been paying monthly on for years and charge double upon move out so read the fine print before deciding to get it

Shady company protects property owners not renters

It’s actually been a while since I’ve had to deal with this awful scamming company but if my review can help others then I have done my part. My partner and I started renting an apt around 2018 and it was as any other apartment complex charging security deposit. Over the course of a few years the management company was sold to a company from Florida which made everything worse and then Covid was the icing on the cake. This property company decided to do away with deposits and implemented rhino. Of course upon lease renewal the new apartment manager didn’t explain what rhino was other than a replacement for a deposit. I asked if it was renters insurance and she said no, that it was a separate charge so I was a bit confused. Later on I decided to actually read all of the paperwork and I realized that any money I was paying monthly for Rhino would not ever be refunded at the end of my lease or move out. This seemed unfair and shady but we were moving after the lease was over anyways. When a new manager came in (the 3rd one in 3 years) I finally asked her to explain to me what rhino actually does. She claimed rhino would help pay for a lease break, past due rent and any damages after move out. Sounds good right? Wrong, I found this out later. Come move out date, my mother and I spent a week cleaning and moving stuff out. There were a few things I didn’t properly clean like the trim panels or the sticky stuff from a fly trap in my bedroom window but everything was accounted for. My partner had even bought putty to fill the nail and screw holes in the walls. We were told we would be mailed a letter for any fees after move out regarding cleaning. About 2-3 weeks later my partner received an email from the apartment complex stating we owe $875 for cleaning and repairs. I was livid. In the letter it stated that rhino paid that amount off to the property company but now we needed to reimburse rhino. Are you freaking kidding me?! I immediately started emailing both the property company as well as rhino to clarify what these charges were and asking why we needed to pay more if we had been paying all of our monthly deposits with Rhino. It was then that this company which is the equivalent of loan sharks explained that their protection is for the property company not the renters.
I was sent a detailed list of charges as well as photos of what they claimed was damaged. When I tell you that I laughed at how ridiculous this was, it’s an understatement. They were charging us for having to repaint the walls due to the putty being a brighter color than the walls. Is a new paint job not the standard for fixing up a place before renting out again? They also said the trim was dirty, there was smudges on a wall and sticky residue on a window. How does all of this warrant $875?! I was expecting no more than $100-$200 if anything but this was absolutely ridiculous. I spent about a month going back and forth with Rhino arguing about their disgusting tactics and at the end simply said I was not paying off their debt and left it at that. I’ve left negative reviews on their social media which they then restricted me from doing so. Please if you are a renter and see that a property used Rhino instead of a security deposit, run the other way. They will fool you into believing you are protected as a renter but the only people that benefit from this are Rhino and the property owners who take all of your money. Any money you put into Rhino as a renter will never go back to you. At least with a security deposit you are able to get it back. I lived in an apt for 9 years before and I even was able to get my security deposit back. Do not trust Rhino, they will scam you.

I wish I could give this company zero…

I wish I could give this company zero stars!!!!!! Where do I even begin. Well, the first time I signed up and completed my application, they quoted me a price of 17.00. Ok, fine. The second time I logged into my they said I owe 3800 and did not qualify for the security deposit payment plan. Each time I have logged in it's given me a different number. This company is scandalous!!!!! The only reason I am using them is because the apartment im interested in moving into uses them for security deposit payments. Every time i try to get someone from customer service to help me with my issue they say, "Well, you have to complete your application." It is complete, the technical issue is on your side, hence why my application can't be approved so i can receive my lease!!! I am so done, I will be reporting this company to the appropriate agencies.

This company emailed me on a Sunday morning at 8 AM stating that I only had 24 hours to pay my security deposit at my apartment complex. I was frantic because I was truly abiding by the lease agreement. They did it on a Sunday morning, knowing that I would have no ability to contact Anyone to find out the truth or falsehood of the claim. Their practices are unethical, but I believe they are also illegal. Isn’t it still against the law in this country to solicit at certain hours on certain days? Surely companies cannot solicit at 8 AM on a Sunday morning!

Shady business

An actual working phone # would be so helpful and professional. I purchased a new rental property and two separate tenants at this property had a policy with Rhino. I have made multiple attempts to get our information updated from the old LLC to our LLC without any success. I would not offer this to any of my other tenants as an option. Their customer service through email is useless. This is a shady business. I do not recommend.

They offered to pay the deposit using their service. They quickly withdrew $107. Well, when the apartment management stopped communicating, I tried to return the deposit and it turned out to be impossible. There are no phones or chat, there are only some hints that lead to nowhere, definitely one star, a beautiful fraudulent scheme.

Buyer Beware!!

Buyer Beware!!! The renter is NOT the customer - the apartment complex is the customer and RHINO will only serve the best interest of the management company. I lived in a terrible apartment. Trying to get maintenance to do anything was an exercise in frustration. However, I always paid my rent in full and on time. When I moved out I left the apartment clean for the most part. However, the apartment manager never did a move out inspect (or move-in either, for that matter). After I was already out of the apartment for over a month I was informed by RHINO that the complex was charging me for a broken window. I knew nothing about a broken window. For all I know maintenance accidentally broke it after I was gone or maybe the lawn crew hit a rock with the mower and accidentally broke it. I told RHINO I had no knowledge of a broken window. Their response was to tell me to prove by providing photos... of what??? The window I didn't break...??? How do you prove you DIDN'T do something? I used to work for a legal aid program and seriously doubt their accusation would hold water in court, especially when they didn't bother to do a move out inspection with me. Nevertheless, it was $120 dollars so rather than ruin my rental history by refusing to pay it - which is what RHINO said would happen when they turned it over to collections - I went ahead and made a couple of payments toward the balance and then wanted to pay it off the rest of the way. However, when I attempted to access my account to make the final payment, there was no way to do so and no number to contact them to make a payment by phone either. So, in nutshell, not only did they charge me for damage I didn't do, then they made it harder for me to pay it off. I am still waiting for them to respond to my email requesting a link to pay the full balance. This is a terrible company! I will never rent a place that I have to go throught them again.
