My appointment was cancelled last minute via email letter which informed you were pleased to offer another appointment but didn’t actually say the current appointment was cancelled so we had to ring and double check if that was the case. I wish to make you aware of this, On Friday the 7th August my Partner had a phone call from the Spencer private Hospital in regards to a cancelation appointment for the Pain Management Clinic for myself, which was for the next day Saturday 8th August at 0900hrs with Dr S. (Full name not given as complaint has gone in and still waiting to contacted about the complaint)
Well the appointment was nothing short of demoralising to say the least. Instead of receiving care, a listening ear, support and understanding and having a examination and a treatment plan I was hoping for, I was met with a doctor who was rude, completely dismissive, and entirely uninterested in actually understanding what I am going through and what I had to say.
From the start, there was no real attempt to investigate my symptoms or look at the physical condition. Instead, he just asked where the pain was. Dr S automatically decided to a single conclusion without examining me that my pain exists simply because I am FAT and do not exercise enough so the muscles deteriorate with age, which is what he explained in those terms. He said there was no spinal stenosis and that was normal narrowing in a man my size and age, and everybody my age he saw would have the same narrowing and no other reason why I would be in pain and basically calling me a liar but in not so many words. He then tried showing my partner and I the MRI scan quickly pointing out the spinal narrowing but made big point of making large circler motions around fatty area in my back on the MRI scan and telling me the fat is pushing its way through the muscles in the back.
My entire medical history and lifestyle were completely ignored and wasn’t even spoken/asked about and any time I tried to explain what I experiencing, it was batted away under the blanket assumption that I was just FAT and LAZY and that was the root cause of everything. Even though I tried to explain that I was a doorman in nightclubs for a very long number of years and with that came with years of weight lifting, gym work including CV to handle the job and that was on top of a full time job. Also that for years I was a Sargent and now I am an officer in the Army Cadet and I was always was fit for that up to a few years ago, able to walk miles with 50 kilos on my back but he wasn’t interested but he was calling me Lazy? Really? I was just shut down and told I just need to "deal with the root cause ie: being fat and lazy"—as if living with chronic pain is something I chose to do, He then kept on about I need to change my lifestyle time and again. He didn’t even asked about my lifestyle just amused I was a fat, lazy good for nothing stain on society and that’s how he made me feel. I tried to explain that when I was younger I had a higher pain threshold than I shot down with “in what way? I have hundreds of patients saying that to me” and when I was saying I used to be able to tolerate pain a lot more when I was younger he snapped “but a Rat in a laboratory has the same Pain Receptors as you and when they feel pain the receptors fires like in a human.” Comparing me to a RAT! I was so insulted and humiliated and when I told him that he simply said “I’m sorry you took it that way” not I am sorry for insulting you. He then told me I shouldn’t be on the 20mg morphine patches and said who ever gave you morphine patches was foolish for prescribing morphine patches to me as a 20mg patch of morphine could kill a person like me and they should only be prescribed to cancer patients and such like who are in real pain. Again like I was lying and making my pain up for some sort of sympathy!! I was afraid to actually tell him I had two of the patches on as I had been moving furniture around and taking two beds down from the spare bedroom and I was in absolute agony. (First time and last time I have done that) I couldn’t get a word in to say that the combination of the 20mg morphine patch and acupuncture that Miles was giving me was working for me and I am able to get six hours sleep now. I was just made to feel that I was a liar and he felt I was just Fat and lazy.

Staff were excellent and caring putting me at ease. Physio pilot scheme was great for me. Could actually get up and manage bathroom with a bit of assistance a few hours later. Room lovely and food good and good selection. Catering staff and vleaners could not fault. Only thing was I struggled to get comfortable on bed mattress and chair for sitting in was hard.

The nurses were very caring and understanding.
The anaethestist explained everything for me to understand.
The physiotherapists were very caring and understanding.
The catering staff were very friendly and caring
The porter Tom was cheerful and put you at ease

From the first time that I started using the Spencer unit, I’ve had first class treatment all the way

The nurses are always friendly and polite and also have found the doctors always have time to talk to you and explain your health concerns very happy

Really good hospital staff excellent

Rozah is an amazing physio she has been doing acupuncture for my neck issues. It has massively helped. She makes me feel at ease and very comfortable. She is very skilled at what she does. Would highly recommend.
