Synchrony operates as a predatory…
Synchrony operates as a predatory lender through deferred-interest retail financing.
I paid $400 before my first statement was even issued, then scheduled bi-weekly payments that would have resulted in $600 paid before the first due date. Despite this, I discovered that Synchrony would still consider the account late if a separate **$218 “minimum payment” was not credited within a specific billing window.
In other words, I could have paid nearly three times the minimum, on time and in advance, and still have my so-called “0% loan” converted into a 39.99% penalty APR with retroactive interest.
The minimum payment is structured so that the balance will not be paid off within the promotional period, virtually guaranteeing that many consumers will trigger massive deferred interest. Early payments are not clearly disclosed as potentially not counting toward minimum payment requirements.
Historically, interest rates above ~21% were considered usurious in many jurisdictions, which is why consumer-protection laws exist. While these practices may now be technically legal, this structure is clearly designed to trap responsible borrowers through timing technicalities rather than to provide fair financing.
Consumers should understand that with Synchrony, paying early, paying extra, and paying responsibly does not protect you unless you fully understand their billing mechanics. I strongly advise avoiding this lender unless you are prepared to micromanage every payment.
SYNCHRONY BANK Won't Close My Account
On a SYNCHRONY BANK Car Care account for America’s Tire, I paid my full balance of $594.16 on April 26, 2026, and asked Synchrony to close the account. Synchrony still charged me $3.00 of trailing (residual) interest on May 22. I paid this in full and they assured me that my account was now closed on May 28. On June 21, they charged me another $5.00, which I promptly paid. I then asked Synchrony on the phone how I could get them to close the account and stop charging me interest, and all they would tell me was to check for more money due later. I asked how much I could pay that day to close everything: they wouldn't tell me. I asked if I could pay a larger amount--such as $20--to ensure closure, and they could keep the change later; they said that they could not accept more than was currently due (such as the $5.00 for June). On July 22, they charged me another $7.00, which I paid on July 31. Notice how the amount owed is increasing by $2 per month--from $3 to $5 to $7--even though I have paid each month on time. I just talked to them on the phone again (on August 4), and they instructed me that--even though the $7.00 for July 22 is not due until August 14--and I paid it in full on July 31--I "might" still owe additional money again at the end of August. When are government banking regulators going to SHUT DOWN THIS ABUSIVE BANK?
This POS company holds your payments…
This POS company holds your payments 8-10 days after they recieve it from your bank. I paid my card off in full on the 1st, the money is out of my bank acct and they got it on the 1st but I can't use the card again for 10 days because of the hold. Just another bs company taking advantage of people.
Charged Interest on a Closed, Paid-Off Account — Then Reported Me Delinquent
I closed my Synchrony account after months of billing that I could never get a straight answer about, and it has cost me my credit score over $8.
Repeatedly, I would call, ask for my exact balance, pay that amount, and then receive a statement the following month saying the figure I'd been given was wrong — followed by new interest and a late fee. This happened over multiple billing cycles. Every representative gave me a different explanation.
On my fifth call, I was finally told something no one had mentioned before: that payments have to be manually allocated, and that if they aren't, the money may be applied in a way that leaves a balance behind and triggers additional interest and another late fee. That was never disclosed to me in writing or in any of the four prior calls.
I paid the account in full on 3/15, ahead of a 3/25 due date, and closed it. Synchrony then charged residual interest on a closed, paid-off account. I was no longer receiving paper statements and had no reason to log in to an account I had closed and paid in full. That roughly $8 charge went unpaid, was reported as delinquent, and damaged my credit.
A bank that gives customers inaccurate balances by phone, does not disclose how payments are allocated, and then reports a customer delinquent over a residual charge on a closed account is not a bank I can recommend to anyone. I closed my remaining Synchrony card as well.
Criminals-They steal from People
Synchrony Bank is a collection of criminals, pretending to be customer service advocates. They do nothing to remedy the problem and they make excuses for why they charge you late fees when you pay early the day before a new statement prints. stay far away from this company. If we keep bringing the truth to light, they will eventually shut down, which is what they deserve. Their employees have no moral structure. they argue all day long instead of taking accountability for their mistakes. one of the representatives named Ethan even once so far to insult my military background by saying he will not accept my statement about what they did to me because he has military family and then proceeded to call me a liar. they are obnoxious, unprofessional and disrespectful . Don’t waste your time with a bank full of liars and criminals.
I've had nothing but problems with…
I've had nothing but problems with Synchrony sice they took over my Paypal credit. I've ordered items and paid for them and then the charges reappear months later. I've disputed this and had a refund and was told I was all set and had a zero balance and then the same charge appears in my account again and they tell me there is nothing more they can do for me. I've had problems with returns not being refunded to my account. I've also had nothing but difficulties with customer service, they bounce you around to different departments and you end up being on the phone for up to an hour or more for one simple question or problem. I am canceling my account and I warn everyone not to get involved with them.
Worthless and doesn’t care about you
They rejected my dispute on charges from a company that straight up stole my money
While cleaning up my credit
While cleaning up my credit, my American Eagle credit card was one of the first ones I paid off. Two months later synchrony closed my account. I disputed this action and they declined. Absolutely ridiculous!
Terrible at their job and rude …
Synchrony bank has the rudest customer service representatives and their supervisors I have ever encountered, you would that they would appreciate long term customers, but they could care less.
No professionalism at all, and you can detect it in their fist few words.
Canceled my card on false terms
Canceled my card on false terms. Stated I was unable to pay bill, even though I had account for 7 plus years and never missed a payment. Balance never went near max, only used about 1/3 of usage available.
Stay far away from this company
Stay far away from this company. They are the worst to work with or deal with. Stick with high-end companies, Capital One Bank of America anything else but this. I have never seen a credit company every six months drop your credit limit when you have been in good standings with the company pay all of your bills on time in full. I run a small company and had thousands of dollars worth of credit line with them. Out of the blue, they cut it in half with zero explanation. Six months after they dropped it down to a few hundred dollars. I don’t know how they can do that when we were spending thousands of dollars on just one of their cards every single month on gas alone. They must not like making money and the reviews that you were reading. Explain exactly why you need to stay away from this company. And it’s not just their credit cards it’s Paypal. It’s everything they start you off with a high credit limit. It looks great on your credit score you pay your bills on time you do all the right things and then every so often they drop your credit limit for no reason at all, and that affects your credit score. Keep in mind as well. It becomes a negative review even though you have a good standing with the company. It’s absolutely absurd stay far away.
After being a great customer and paying…
After being a great customer and paying them on time every time they decrease your limit and mess your credit up. They have very high interest rates and will do their best to mess you around. Never missed a payment, never was late but after I paid my cards down they immediately lowered my limits for no reason. So, what that does is shows you're using over 35% of your limit. I had three cards at $3500-$5000. I paid on time for over two years. I decided to pay them down. They lowered my limits to $200 a card. Those cards was 29% interest rates but my plan was to still keep them just in case but nothing I could do with a $200 limit.
the most disgusting company I have ever…
the most disgusting company I have ever dealt with. their portals are a joke. I am phasing out everything to do with Synchrony related accounts. They have wasted so much of my time energy and frustration. total incompetence in technology and security. Short all of their stock
Horrible bank and customer service
Terrible bank. First they cancel your card after one year of no use but it's not like it's a regular credit card where you can use it for any purchases. There are specific categories you can only use the card for so what if a consumer has no need for it for a period of time? This bank expects you to be consistently using their card to keep your account open. They are also the only bank I know that doesn't provide a courtesy waiver of returned check fees. An error occurred that was ultimately a mistake but they don't extend any courtesies or provide good customer service. Terrible bank. Nickel and dime you for everything.
There is something so seriously wrong…
There is something so seriously wrong with Synchrony Bank and it's making me very angry. Their bank cards, Lowes, Synchrony master card, and Care credit are all ripe for fraud and guess who they blame. Cannot tell you the grief they have caused. Clearly, in my case it was not hard to know that the accounts were compromised, the charges were not mine, and all activity appeared over a short period with large purchases. You'd think that Synchrony Bank would tag it, but they don't. Got no alerts, no filters and they do nothing to correct the situation. That's all for now.
Lowes and Amex switched to Synchrony…
Lowes and Amex switched to Synchrony Bank for the Lowes pro credit card. I don't know why Amex would keep their name on the card. I have had nothing but problems with Synchrony. It started with registering the new card through payment processing. I ended up closing the account (the Synchrony agent did not care) and moving my business to HD.
Opened a cd account with them
Opened a cd account with them. Had the money transferred from my checking. Easy enough except my money disappeared. Rep hung up on me. Virtual assistant put me in line for a call back well over an hour ago. Zero.
What a great company to not do business…
What a great company to not do business with. Can't access my account to pay the balance let alone speak with anyone. So now I have to wait till Monday to pay the balance. Saddest part I have an account but when I input all the crazy info they want it says my account does not exist. Funny as they take money on a direct withdrawal monthly. Stay away from these guys bad bad juju....
If I ever had a regret, this would be it
It’s really sad how the system is set up to get people in more debt even when they are attempting to pay it off. The credit system along with a lot of these loans are contracts of deception! I have been faithfully working to pay down this credit card that was offered to me as an assistance when I went to get work done on my vehicle. I typically was going through Affirm whom I’ve used and although their high interest rate are on top it’s worked for me. (At least you know what you’re dealing with) This company after I got my balance down to roughly $800 they slapped me with another $206 in interest bringing my balance up to $1000 on a $1500 credit.
I’ve started making a habit to look at reviews on companies first since getting this cc because this company is full of stiff necked reps and wrongful dealings with their customers. I’ve read where they screw people credit report with how their accounts are paid off and closed.
They get these payments in full and still be then use the law to leave the customer with a bad record. The Bible warns about signing a surety contract and it’s a lesson learned. Deeply regret listening to the sales lady who advised me that I would be better off with this card than affirm. Following my initial decision is vital for me here on out. I learned quickly what type of hearts they have when my tire went flat the next day I got the service and called them.
Rip off company
Rip off company. Avoid at all costs (of which I have to ironically do to get out of my CC situation). Poor customer service. Thieves!
