If I could give no stars I would.
We sent off our application paperwork at the end of January. When we hadn’t heard anything by March we contacted Accord and it was realised that half of our application had been lost and so we had to send our documents through again. We have since had weeks of being asked various questions and for more documents, many of which we had already answered/provided, some of the questions are for things that don’t even exist. The most recent issue is that the home report is now over 3 months old so we are waiting on the surveyor to confirm that the house is still in the same condition. This would not have been required if our application had just been looked at when we first sent it in.
Now we are coming in to the end of April (3 months later!!) and we still haven’t had an answer or mortgage offer. Not only is this causing significant stress and anxiety, but it is also costing us money in solicitor and broker fees as we have had to chase them so often.
Honestly the level of incompetence and lack of communication is shocking

PLEASE AVOID. Offered a mortgage deal but when I phoned to get the deal I was told it had expired (7 days after receiving the offer paperwork) anyway the newer deal would be £25 more but Accord Mortgages couldn't honour the initial deal. So waited for new paperwork which again arrived late. Phoned to get an extension and was given 7 days. However posted the mortgage paperwork using their second class envelope they provided on for the post to be delayed. Accord then phoned me and I asked to phone me back as was busy but the rude person said I'm not able to call you back how rude so phoned back later and was told the form arrived on 10th but the deal was only up to 8th so either postal delay or Accord didn't properly process internally so now we have to have a new deal another £15 more so now we're £40 more than should be because of Accord. I would advise to look elsewhere as this company is substandard on many levels.

I’ve had nothing but a positive experience with Accord.
They come across as a very common-sense lender, with underwriters who are polite, helpful, empathetic, and, most importantly, understanding. They may ask for more documents than some lenders, but everything requested is always perfectly reasonable, and they review them extremely quickly.
They never needed chasing—they just get things done, which made the whole process far less stressful.
I also spoke to a lovely lady called Karen back in January 2026 during my mortgage process. She was an absolute delight to speak to and provided one of the best customer service experiences I’ve ever had.
Highly recommended

Common sense lending with a newly qualified Teacher and swift processing of the application once submitted. Documents requested were as per pre-underwriting discussion.

I would avoid these guys like AIDS, they give you mortgage in principle make you jump through hoops for weeks/months on end then pull plug on their offer only hindering the long stressful process of buying a house. Please guys I’ll say it again don’t waste you time giving this company any of your energy….

- Poorly designed web portal. Blocks password managers so you're forced to enter passwords manually
-Hard to make an overpayment. No online option. Have to call an automated helpline that takes 10+ minutes and has a horrible user experience.

As a leader in the mutual sector for the past 5 years, I have seen firsthand how ethical lending should work: with fairness, empathy, and a genuine commitment to supporting customers through difficulties. In my view, Yorkshire Building Society (YBS) and its subsidiary Accord Mortgages fell far short of this standard, and I strongly recommend avoiding them if possible.
Their approach felt aggressive and unsupportive, which in my experience undermines the mutual movement's principles and can make tough situations much worse.
I fell into temporary mortgage arrears in September 2025 due to redundancy and immediately requested forbearance. They agreed to a payment break, but then attempted unauthorised direct debits, which I had to block myself. After that, I received repeated threatening letters about litigation and repossession, even while my complaint was under active review by the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS). I had solicitors send a cease-and-desist notice under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, but the pressure continued in my experience.
This felt contrary to what I expected from Consumer Duty (which requires avoiding foreseeable harm and supporting vulnerable customers) and the Mortgage Charter (which YBS has signed, committing to repossession as a genuine last resort and no forced action without consent in under 12 months from the first missed payment in most cases, except exceptional circumstances). At the time, I was only around 4 months into arrears, had stayed in regular contact, and had even reached out to senior figures including their CEO and the CEO of the Building Societies Association — yet the escalation continued.
Their responses were vague and unhelpful, with no meaningful pause or adjustment offered despite my situation. In my opinion, this prioritised enforcement over resolution and showed little regard for the impact on my health and wellbeing.
As someone deeply involved in the mutual sector, I found this deeply disappointing. It seems to contradict the ethos of community service, ethical integrity, and putting people before profit that mutuals are supposed to represent.
Avoid them if you can. In my experience, if difficulties arise, expect heavy pressure rather than flexible support, with little apparent adaptation to vulnerability or ongoing reviews.
Choose a lender that better matches the mutual promise. It feels like some mutuals are drifting toward corporate-style tactics, charging more while relying on historical goodwill, then acting harshly at the first sign of trouble.
Consider alternatives like Halifax, NatWest, HSBC, etc. — they often offer more competitive rates and, in my view, more reasonable handling.
The situation remains ongoing...
