Charismatic and kind

My husband and I really enjoyed the tour at York Chocolate Story today. We found it fun and informative and our guide Kelly was very kind, making sure that everyone in our tour group of various ages was comfortable and able to access all parts of the tour, which was just over an hour long. The best part was learning about the chocolate making process and making and decorating our own chocolate lollipops. You get to taste a generous amount of chocolate and sweets. Thank you Kelly for a very charismatic and professional tour!

Pip was an amazing guide 🙌

Had a fantastic time with my family!

Our tour guide pip was fantastic and very attentive to the group and our 3 year old.

Definitely worth the money, will be returning next time we are in York.

I have seen some other reviews on trustpilot for this experience and I believe that some have unfairly rated, either because of bad weather, not booking and not showing up on time. The website has all of the information for guests available and issues with parking should be obvious having read a map, this was my first time in the city and we had no such issues.

DO NOT BOOK A CHILDREN’S PARTY HERE

DO NOT BOOK A CHILDREN’S PARTY HERE! My daughter celebrated her 8th birthday with 18 friends here last Sunday. Complete chaos. Photographs of email sent to explain all of the problems & reasons not to book…including the response I received to my concerns from their General Manager can be found on Google review and Trip Advisor. Strongly recommend reading in full before spending your money here.

We had a very unpleasant experience…

We had a very unpleasant experience today, which ruined our mood for the rest of our stay in York. We are traveling from another city with a small child, so we started our trip planing to arrive with a 1,5 hours prior our reservation time. On the way to York my son needed to go to the bathroom more then once, he didn't feel very well, so we had to do extra stops. A road was closed and we had to detour, so ultimately it happened that we were late for the time we had booked the tour. I tried to check if I could change the booking time or day, so we could be on the tour as I promised my little one, but they actually don't have this option. Arriving in York and being tourists for the first time in this city, we didn’t expect there will be no car parking close to the York’s Chocolate Story and being a very central location we had to park a little further away. Although we were already hungry, after driving for 3,5 hours, we didn't stop to eat but headed straight to take the tour as soon as possible, as my son already started being very anxious about it. When we happily arrived at our destination, we were informed that we won't be able to do the tour, that we were too late (45 min) and we won't receive a refund either. I was not expecting this at all. They said we cannot go with another group that day or the next day without paying again. First of all, paying already £53 for the tour and not being able to be on it it’s very frustrating, but also not even receiving any kind of refund, seems like a rip-off to me, especially in the not-so-easy times we're all experiencing right now. We tried of course to explain the situation to three different staff members, asked for a tour at any other available time, we were ready to adjust our other plans, we were ready to wait 5 hours if needed, just to fulfil our child's wish, but in fact the people there were just indifferent, insensitive and not caring about our situation at all. What bothered me the most was the fact that we really wanted to arrive on time, it was a none predictable situation, not as if we didn't show up at all and were asking for a refund. We tried to ask, to explain what caused our delay,
you really can't predict everything in detail and for this reason we are very disappointed by the way we were treated by the management of this place. They didn’t even tryto help us or assist us in any way it could lead to a solution for us as customers. This is just wrongful behaviour for a business.
They also told us that the tours were fully booked, although, while we were waiting for the general manager I had a look on the website and they still had places available that day on another tour (which was supposed to start only an hour later), I honestly couldn’t understand their reasons for such an attitude.
As a result, we had a 4-year-old crying and being upset all day because that was his biggest wish on the trip to York.
The whole thing left us as parents speechless, I never thought that a place like this, that was supposed to bring so much joy and happy memories to families and kids, would leave us with such a bitter taste.
Their policies regarding tour cancellation or date/time changes are not adapted and need urgent review!
Never experienced anything like this and I will definitely not recommend this tour or place to any of our friends!

Sensory but a bit mechanical and lacking in personality

York Chocolate Story strikes a balance between heritage and commercial appeal, though it leans more towards being a polished guided exhibition tour rather than a traditional museum. While the experience benefits from high-quality room sets and modern technology, which reflect substantial investment, this does impact the tour's personal touch. The guides seem to be working to a tight schedule, often rushing through their scripts, and their delivery can feel somewhat rehearsed, lacking spontaneity. However, our guide was friendly, despite the 'churn 'em through' nature of the format.

A similar feeling applied to the chocolatier demonstration at the end. Although their skill and precision were impressive, honed through countless hours of practice, the presentation felt somewhat perfunctory—rushed and lacking enthusiasm, as though they were simply going through the motions. Disappointingly, this was the case despite it still being quite early in the day. It felt a little wham, bam, and now leave - quickly!

One positive aspect was the tasting opportunities throughout the tour. These were enjoyable, mostly familiar, and offered a relaxed atmosphere, which was a relief for us as our autistic twins often struggle with trying new foods. A word of caution for visitors with sensory sensitivities: some rooms are dimly lit, which may feel unsettling, so having a phone torch handy could help. Additionally, ear defenders may be beneficial, as the film segments are quite loud.

We enjoyed our time, but we would be unlikely to go back.

Thoroughly enjoyed my birthday trip…

Thoroughly enjoyed my birthday trip here. They take you through chocolate's history, from it's Mayan roots right up to today. I can forgive the guide the use of two swear words (Cadbury's and Fry's). The interaction between the guide and the people in the screen room was amazing. It almost felt like they were there. All families of York chocolate makers were represented and it was done in such a way, it reminded me strongly of Horrible Histories. A truffle -making experience was booked, but ITV were filming, so it had to be cancelled. It didn't wreck my birthday too much...!

Thank you York's Chocolate Story

Austin was an amazing guide with lots of chocolate and sweets to eat along the way.

Although I had to complain about an issue I had with regards to the digital downloads. I contacted yorkschocolatestory and they resolved the issue for me.

A big Thankyou!

After complaining to York Chocolate Story about a non refundable Ticket and writing a review on here about our Experience, I now can only write in praise of generosity as Stewart Wood, General Manager has contacted me and are giving us a Family of four ticket to take the tour.
I thank him and the Company for this Gesture of Good will especially as only two of us had paid for the original tour. I look forward to going on the tour at last and I can promise we will not be late for this one!
So a Big Thank You to Stuart Wood and the York Chocolate Store.
