Westland lawn care feed & weed, DON’T BOTHER its Crap!!

Hello,

We're sorry to hear that you have been disappointed with the results.

Westland offers several lawn care products that customers may refer to as a "weed and feed", however they work in different ways. Some products contain herbicides that actively control weeds, while others are feed-based treatments designed to strengthen the lawn, improve colour and help grass outcompete weeds over time.

As we do not know which specific product was used, we are unable to comment on the results you experienced from your review alone. We would be grateful if you could contact our Customer Service team directly with the product name and photographs of the area treated so that we can review the application and provide the most appropriate advice.

We look forward to hearing from you and investigating this further.

We have reviewed our customer service records and believe we may have been in contact regarding this matter previously. Westland Lawn Patch Fix

On 01/06/26 I reviewed Westland's Lawn Patch Fix stating that after 4 weeks of applying it to 3 bare patches not one new blade of grass appeared. The company blamed the retailer and promised me a replacement box which never arrived. I have already reseeded with a different firm's product. The grass is growing!!

Hello,

We’re sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback.

Having reviewed your case, we can see the product used was from a 2024 production batch. While lawn seed does not carry a fixed expiry date, our internal testing shows that older seed can begin to lose viability over time, which may result in reduced or no germination.

We’d also like to clarify that we do not place blame on retailers. In cases like this, our aim is to support customers by offering a replacement so the area can be re-treated.

Due to differing packaging requirements between England and ROI, your replacement was arranged via our Northern Ireland team. Unfortunately, the first despatch did not reach you, and a second attempt was made once this was raised.

We’re pleased to hear you’ve since achieved growth, although we regret that your experience with our product and service did not meet expectations on this occasion.

Thanks,

I used Westland compost with added John…

I used Westland compost with added John Innes this year, when planting my bedding plants into containers. Even the most hardy of plants have died, lobelia and ivy. Petunia rotted back and developed fungus and many other plants that bloomed profusely last year, died or had leaf burn, when I used this compost. I repotted two houseplants that I’ve had for years and both died.
A terrible product and a mistake to buy it.

Hello,

We’re sorry to read about your experience and appreciate you taking the time to share this.

It’s understandably frustrating when plants that have previously performed well don’t establish or begin to decline after planting. While this isn’t the experience we want for our customers, there can be a number of factors that influence plant health once planted, including watering levels, temperature changes, and how moisture is retained in containers.

Our products are made from natural materials that are composted, heat treated and sieved during production to reduce contaminants, however harmless fungi can still develop as part of the natural breakdown process. In most cases these are not harmful to plants, but overly wet conditions can contribute to root stress or rot in some varieties.

That said, we’d really like the opportunity to review this further with our technical team. If you’re happy to contact us directly at customerservice@westland.com, please include:

Images of the compost and affected plants
The quality assurance (QA) or batch information printed on the bag

This will allow us to investigate the specific batch and provide a more detailed assessment.

We’re sorry again for your experience and appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Thanks,

With a star rating on trust pilot of just 1.6 don't waste your money.

I bought two large bags of Westland multipurpose compost with John Inns. I found that half of my seeds failed to germinate and the ones that did germinate struggled to grow. I got much better results when I transferred the seedlings to my ordinary garden soil.
I intend to return the un opened bag of Westland back to the store. I won't be buying Westlands compost until the star rating gets to 4, currently 1.6 stars.

Hello,

We’re really sorry to read about your experience and appreciate you taking the time to share this.

We understand how disappointing it is when seeds fail to germinate and growth doesn’t meet expectations, particularly when you’ve invested in larger bags. While many factors can influence germination and early plant development, this isn’t the experience we want for our customers.

If you’re willing, our team would like to look into this further for you. Please contact us directly at customerservice@westland.com with:

Images of the compost and affected seedlings
The quality assurance (QA) or batch information from the bag

This helps us review the batch with our technical team and provide a more detailed assessment.

In the meantime, returning the unopened bag to store is absolutely fine, and they should be able to assist you with this in line with their returns policy.

We hope you’ll consider giving us another try in the future, and we’d welcome the opportunity to put this right.

BEWARE Gardman Nyjer Seeds sprouting.

Bought a 2kg bag of Gardman Nyjer Seed for birds, put it out in two tube feeders on a stand in the newly laid lawn. Within the last week have discovered thousands of sprouting seeds under the feeders. Tried pulling them out, and got some but there are literally thousands of seeds deep in the grass which is fairly wet with the recent rain. Contacted Westland and reported issue, got a reply asking for batch number etc, which I forwarded. Company says it’s not their fault, seeds aren’t heat treated, and although it says on the pack that some seeds may germinate, there are thousands of them germinating under my bird feeder. I have moved it to the patio, but I’m disgusted at the company response. Beware!
UPDATE: Unfortunately, I can’t add a photo, but it specifically says on the packaging “ although every care has been taken to include only non-germinating ingredients, a trace may be present”. My lawn has thousands of sprouting seeds from the Gardman Nyjer Seeds 2kg pack bought! It’s destroyed!

Hello,

We’re sorry to read your review and that you were disappointed with both your experience and our response.

We appreciate that discovering a large number of sprouting seeds beneath your feeder, particularly on a newly laid lawn, would be frustrating.

Gardman Nyjer Seed is not marketed as a “no-grow” product, and there is no claim on the packaging that the seed will not germinate. The statement referring to “a trace may be present” relates to the wider packing process, where different bird feeds are handled, some of which contain naturally germinating ingredients, rather than the Nyjer seed itself being treated to prevent growth.

All of our Nyjer seed is sourced and handled in line with current UK requirements, and this product has been reviewed by our Bird Care team, who have confirmed there is no fault with the seed.

We do appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback.

Compost draining issues etc

I have never had so much trouble with my gardening as I have had this year. Bought a few bags of Westland multi purpose compost, and seed compost and everything has been a disaster. I have been gardening for 32 years and this year hardly any seeds are germinating, mushrooms are growing instead, the drainage of the compost is very odd and all i get is brown smelly water at the bottom. The plants I repoted in this compost are simply not thriving. I must have got a bad batch. This has never happend to me in all the years of gardening.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

We’re really sorry to read about your experience this season, especially after so many years of successful gardening.

It’s understandably frustrating when results aren’t as expected, particularly when you’ve used a product you would normally rely on. The issues you’ve described with drainage, odour, and poor plant performance are certainly not typical of our composts.

While our growing media is carefully blended, composted, heat-treated and screened during production to ensure consistency and minimise contaminants, variations can occasionally occur between batches or due to how the product has been stored prior to use. Factors such as storage conditions, weather, watering levels, and container drainage can also influence how compost performs once in use.

We’d really like to look into this further for you, as your experience matters to us. If you’re happy to, please contact our team directly with a few more details, including the bag codes (printed on the packaging) and any photos you may have. This will allow us to investigate the batch and support you properly.

We hope we can restore your confidence in our products.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

We’re really sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback.

We’ve reviewed your enquiry and the images you sent through, and understand your concerns about finding mushrooms in the compost. While we appreciate this can be unexpected, mushrooms can sometimes develop in peat-free and organic-based composts due to natural fungal activity. This is part of the normal breakdown process of organic material and is not harmful to plants.

That said, we recognise this isn’t what you were expecting when opening a fresh bag, and we’re sorry for the disappointment this has caused.

We did respond offering to look into this further and provide a goodwill gesture, but we haven’t yet received the additional details we need. If you’re happy to get back in touch with the QA code from the bag and your details, we’ll be more than happy to help resolve this for you.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

We’re sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback.

Our Top Soil is screened during production to remove larger naturally occurring materials such as stones and wood.

We can reassure you that we do not use green waste in our growing media, and our raw materials undergo a treatment process designed to help reduce weed seeds and pathogens before manufacture.

Without inspecting the grass in question, it is difficult to determine its exact origin. In many cases, grass or weed growth can arise naturally from airborne seeds, wildlife activity, or dormant seeds already present in the existing soil, which can be brought to the surface during cultivation or lawn renovation.

It is also worth noting that our topsoil is not typically recommended for creating new lawns or turf, but is better suited for general landscaping or preparing small areas prior to applying a specially formulated lawn seeding soil.

We would welcome the opportunity to investigate this further. Please contact our Customer Service team directly with photographs of the grass, details of where and when the product was purchased, and any batch information from the packaging so that we can review this with our technical team.

Compost ruined my veg and flower seedlings.

Bought two bags of peat free compost. Had fungi growing in the trays and pots along with seedlings. transplanted some of the seedlings but ones left in their compost did not grow, transplanted ones did.
Telephoned westland who had me sending photos and samples to Northern Ireland. Waste of time. They said that the compost 'performed as expected' and to keep pinching out the fungi as they appeared which seemed never ending. In nearly 40 years of gardening from seed, I think that I have had my worst results ever!

Réponse de Westland Horticulture

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

We’re really sorry to read about your experience, particularly given your many years of growing from seed, and we completely understand how frustrating this situation must have been.

Following your contact with our team, we carried out a full assessment of the sample provided, including EC and pH analysis, and the results were found to be within our expected specifications. While fungal growth was observed, this can occur naturally in peat-free composts as they are biologically active and contain organic materials. This type of fungus is part of the normal breakdown process and is not harmful to plant health.

We do recognise, however, that the appearance of fungi, particularly during seed sowing, can be unexpected and concerning, and this doesn’t reflect the experience we aim to deliver.

From the images shared and our review, many of the plants appeared healthy, and in peat-free growing media, factors such as moisture levels, airflow, and handling after opening can influence how compost performs during early growth stages.

We appreciate that you took the time to provide photos and samples to support the investigation, and we’re sorry that this process felt frustrating for you. As part of this, a gesture of goodwill was provided to acknowledge the inconvenience caused.

Your feedback has been fully noted and shared with our growing media team, as understanding where expectations and experience differ is important in helping us continue to improve both our products and the guidance we provide.

Thanks,
The Westland Team

Hello,

Thank you for your review.

It’s great to hear that you took the time to prepare the area carefully, as this makes a real difference. We also appreciate your balanced feedback, particularly given the recent dry conditions which can slow both germination and establishment.

Our Lawn Feed & Seed (Lawn Thickener) is primarily a feed product, containing a smaller proportion of grass seed designed to help improve thinner or patchy areas over time, rather than deliver a full reseeding result. This can sometimes mean coverage appears more gradual or uneven, especially when conditions are less than ideal.

That said, we’d be more than happy to take a closer look at how it’s performed on your lawn and offer more specific advice. If you’re able to share a few photos and some details of how and when it was applied, please contact us at customerservice@westland.com and we’ll be glad to assist further.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience.

Dreadful compost

I've used many Westland products in the past without any issue. However, I recently bought several bags of the multipurpose John Innes BIO3 and it's the worst compost I've ever used, I can't believe you're actually selling this. It has managed to kill off every seedling which was re-potted into it as well as several more mature potted plants.
Once the compost has been watered it dries very quickly and hardens from the top down forming into a solid crust. This crust is pretty much water proof and any further watering results in the water just sitting on top of the compost rather than soaking down through the pot.
Fortunately I also re-potted some of the same seedlings using a different compost All of these are growing fine, whereas the ones using the Westland multi compost all died.

This is a product I will not be buying again.

The Beds & Borders bark is graded to a typical size range of 20–40mm, but as a natural material there can occasionally be some variation. From what you’ve described, the pieces do sound larger than we would normally expect, so this may be related to a production or screening issue.

Hello,

Thank you for your review, although we’re really sorry to hear how disappointed you are with your recent purchase.

We understand your concerns around the texture and composition of the compost, and we appreciate your honest feedback.

Our composts are made from carefully sourced natural materials such as bark and fibre, which are blended to create a balanced growing medium. This can sometimes result in a coarser texture than expected, particularly as we continue to develop more sustainable, peat-free products.

That said, it’s certainly not the experience we want for our customers if the product hasn’t met your expectations, and we’re sorry to hear you feel it wasn’t good value for money.

Awful Westland compost

I was disgusted with the Westland part free multi purpose compost we bought this year. Every year I plant and grow beans successfully but this time we bought Westland compost which I found to be full of bits of wood and infested with mould and fungus growth. I don't know what is wrong with the seedlings it has produced but they definitely seem nothing like the normal healthy plants I get each year, although have done just the same as I always do. I certainly won't be buying this awful stuff again!

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and we’re sorry to hear about your experience.

Our peat-free composts do contain wood fibres and composted bark as part of the formulation. However, we would not expect to see large pieces of wood within the product. If this has been the case, we would certainly like to investigate further.

In terms of mould or fungus growth, this can sometimes occur during storage, particularly if the compost has become damp at any stage. In most cases, this is superficial and will disperse once the compost is in use, without causing any ongoing issues to plants.

We would very much like the opportunity to look into this for you. Please could you contact our Customer Service team at customerservice@westland.com

Two years of terrible results using Westland All Purpose

This is the second year I have bought Westland peat free all purpose compost for growing tomato, peppers, aubergines, cucumbers and chilli in a greenhouse. This year, the results are exactly the same as last year in that none of the plants grew in a healthy condition. Many died after transplanting from seed compost, whilst others fail to produce a healthy root system and barely grow. For the second year running, I now have to buy young plants from a garden centre and pot them into a compost that commercial growers recommend. I know many gardeners and growers who have been experiencing similar problems and most thought it was something that they were doing wrong. Surely Westland are quality controlling their products and realise that there could be a serious problem with their compost that isn't caused by the users.
