The wacker plate was delivered on time ready to go. The driver took the time to go through operation of it to ensure i was happy and it worked well on my shed base. I was contacted in good time to arrange collection. Overall great.

Good service at a reasonable price - will definitely use HSS again - and recommend them to my friends.

Quality machine, worked with no issues and easy to get the hang of. Delivery guy placed it right where I asked. Both delivery and collection were really prompt with good updates, can’t fault the service.

Ordered 3 identical 180cmx180cm fence panels. Delivered before 8am, unloaded as requested, and signed for by the driver. On subsequent inspection however, one of the three panels was of a different colour and clearly damaged beyond use [which must have been obvious before despatch]. A correct replacement was sent promptly but delivered to a wrong [but fortunately nearby] address. The original faulty panel remains uncollected

Booking was easy and the price very competitive. However the equipment was not picked up when stated in my email. I had to contact after more than a week had gone by and equipment not collected. To add insult to injury, I was nearly charged for a failed collection. This was withdrawn and apologies made. The equipment was quickly collected after my contact and my deposit refunded.

The equipment came from Speedy Hire and the guys were great but not impressed with HSS. Hire costs were high - turns out I could have gone direct to Speedy. HSS sent out e-mail asking if I wanted to extend the hire period but they won’t do it for just a day or two, it had to be for a full week. Decided against it. Customer Services very unhelpful.

Excellent service from start to finish. I will happily use HSS again if I need to hire specialist tools.

A really mixed review. I rented a cement mixer and whacker plate from hss.
Good points - they arrived on the date I selected and were generally ok value. They do sneak in a deposit and recommend a damage waiver too, and the equipment itself has worked fine.
Bad points - really hard to get the stuff collected, I’ve had a whacker plate for 2 months now from a 3 day rental. One time they called me out of the blue about a month after the hire ended saying they would arrive to collect in 5 min (I wasn’t in) , I then got charged a fee for missing collection, so I had to speak to their customer service agent via web chat which took 20mins to get through to get a refund. They then told me 2 dates they would collect both items, they then didn’t arrive and came the next day, and collected just 1 item

My delivery was on time, I had an email and phone call beforehand and the lorry driver was great. Really helpful, friendly and professional

It was dropped off at around 11am , and was picked up around the same time at the end of the hire period . But I couldn't get a time window from them when asked what time it was going to be delivered or picked up . They just gave me a 10hr window of 7am to 5pm . I couldn't plan my day

We recently hired a portable toilet from HSS for a site and, unfortunately, the experience from beginning to end was extremely frustrating.
Before placing the order, we specifically explained that there was a small garden wall at the property and that the toilet would need to be lifted over it. We were assured this would not be a problem and even supplied photographs beforehand so that the access requirements were completely clear.
When the toilet arrived, however, there was only one person delivering it, who understandably said he couldn’t lift it over the wall. Our own operatives therefore had to lift and position the unit themselves.
During the hire we also experienced problems with the facilities that were supposed to be provided. The hand-washing water and soap were either not supplied or not working, and during the hire the only consumables we managed to receive were toilet rolls.
We emailed HSS about the problems and made numerous telephone calls. On several occasions we were told that someone would deal with the matter or come back to us, but unfortunately that follow-up simply didn’t happen.
We subsequently discovered that the actual toilet service was being provided by a third-party contractor, A1 Loo Hire. I appreciate that companies use subcontractors, but our order and relationship were with HSS, so I expected HSS to take responsibility for managing the service and resolving the problems.
The collection then became another saga.
Our original contract was to finish on the 21 August, however we emailed them on the 20 August asking for the toilet to be off-hired from 25 August. Despite this, an attempt was made to collect it on 24 August, when once again the access problem arose — even though this had been explained from the very beginning.
On the morning of 25 August our own operatives lifted the toilet back over the wall and positioned it ready and accessible for collection. It was eventually collected on 24 September.
To add to the frustration, we subsequently received additional invoices, including further hire charges and an aborted-collection charge. This resulted in us formally disputing the account and supplying HSS with the emails and photographic evidence supporting our complaint.
I do, however, believe in giving credit where it is due.
Once the matter was properly considered by HSS Accounts, they eventually offered a 50% credit against the outstanding account, which I have accepted. I had never asked HSS to cancel the entire bill — I simply wanted a reasonable reduction to recognise the service we had actually received — so I consider their eventual proposal a fair way of bringing the matter to a close.
My biggest criticism is therefore not that things went wrong; problems occasionally happen in any business. It was the lack of communication and ownership when they did go wrong. Had someone taken responsibility and responded to our original complaint, much of the subsequent frustration could probably have been avoided.
And perhaps there is a certain irony in repeatedly hearing the recorded telephone message explaining that “calls are recorded for training purposes” while trying unsuccessfully to get somebody to take ownership of the problem.
Hopefully, some useful training may come from ours.
