As a lawyer (Barrister) in the UK, it was important to me that the transfer of the my parents' house was handled sensitively by highly qualified and highly experienced lawyers, specialising in the law of Ludhiana; had the contacts in the relevant departments, had a transparent charging structure and understood me as a person (a woman) and my back story, as well as the brief. I also wanted to be part of the legal team and not an outsider. I investigated a couple of organisations, I had meetings with both. I met with NRI, Leicester (in person and by Teams) and the other law firm was no competition for NRI. I was immediately introduced to the legal team in India. Neelam was my point of contact over there and she was absolutely fantastic - emailing me every 2 weeks with regular updates, dealing with all my questions and holding my hand every step of the way. Sonia and Salim are my Leicester contacts and they were part of the team dealing with my work from this end. They arranged for the Notary Public to come to my house to prepare all the Power of Attorney documents (which had to be sent to the High Court in London to be notarised). The property team in India physically attended the house in Ludhiana, assessed the property, valued it, made sure that it was secure and liaised with all relevant departments (including applying pressure where there were delays). They handled everything from beginning to end without me having to go to India which was helpful, given that I'm a busy lawyer myself. They were also very happy to listen to my ideas about things and provided their very candid legal advice and where appropriate, were not afraid to disagree with me (and they were right to do so). All in all I have been extremely happy with the work done by the property team and i would like to send my thanks to Neelam (India) and Sonia and Salim (Leicester) who took all the stress out of it for me (during the most difficult time of my life).

I have just instructed the Banking team to commence succession proceedings to deal with the 13 bank accounts in my parents name. I have already had a teams meeting with the banking team that has been put together specifically to do the work for me. They walked me through the entire process and what would be involved and what they needed for me in the way of documents to commence the work. They were extremely knowledgeable, a very confident, proactive and a fiercly supportive and protective group of individuals and I left that meeting feeling that they knew my case inside out and totally had my back. Again, we discussed some ideas of my own, my concerns and fears and together, we came up with a plan and a strategy on the way forward.

There are a few things prospective clients should be aware of before employing this company.
First of all the legal advice is provided from India ; NRI legal is not regulated to provide legal advice in the UK.
If you have problems or complaints with NRI legal as we did, you do not have any legal protection in the UK.

As the Head Office is based in India, the Legal Ombudsman can not help, The Trading Standard can not help.
They do not belong to the SRA, Solicitors Regulation Authority, so they cannot help.
You, the client have no legal protection.

This is a grey area which we feel has been exploited by this company. This is an area that the authorities should look into to protect UK clients/ citizens.

Another issue is their payment scheme.

Under its operating model the prospective clients are offered a free consultation and performance assessment. The legal team in India then provide feedback on the success prospects and indicative timeframe with a flat one off inclusive fee for managing the case from start to completion in court. The full cost is notified, and the contract for services signed in the UK. The contract sets out the full fee and the schedule is structured over the agreed timeframe

In our case, 15 months with payments being triggered every quarter over that term regardless of performance.

NRI Legal completely underestimated their own capabilities and has grossly exceeded the agreed timeframe of 15 months for our case. Even with the onset of COVID we were told there could be a possibility of yet another 5 years. So in our case at least 10 years all together.
By 2026 due to the automatic payment schedule the majority of the fee had already been paid with negligible results and declining interest and effort from NRI Legal Services.

We, the clients have no leverage, we were told by NRIL that from once being a strong case which they themselves stated in their review, it is now weak and we should request a settlement. A settlement is an easy option for the company as it would requires little work or effort from NRIL

Apart from meetings with the marketing team based in the UK, the Indian team had shown no interest in meeting with us, the clients. To be fair they have arranged Microsoft teams meeting when asked, and respond to emails promptly. At these meetings it was very clear the staff did not understand our case.
You would assume a professional legal team would want a meeting with their clients, to introduce themselves, to ask us questions about our case, take statements from witnesses, but no, they have never requested a meeting with us to discuss our case or take statements.

The only time they had ever requested a meeting was when they wanted more payment.

A relative also a client of NRI, has never had a meeting with their lawyers in India even after several years of being their client. She also was offered a settlement even though she had not requested one.

I shall provide another review with a more personal account with our dealings with this company, and our case.

We received excellent service from them. On our first appointment, they were upfront with their costs and time frame. Yes, there were additional costs, but they were expected and mentioned.
They have been a great help and understanding.
There was constant communication between us.

We enquired about doing transfer of land for my father with other solicitors in Birmingham - but they did not fill us with confidence. Their processes were unclear, they had personal files lying on the floor of offices etc.

We ended up having an introductory meeting with Gurjit and Rajiv at the Smethwick offices of NRI. Both clearly explained the process, yes a bit of a sales pitch, but we felt confident they could meet our needs and work to timescales we were looking for. They are a big company with good resources in India and are professional.

The costs are not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. We personally felt confident enough to pay half the money up front to get things moving. Gurjit was our main contact moving forwards. I found Gurjit clear and helpful and she kept me informed. Some elements of work were time sensitive and she worked to ensure those timescales were met. She kept in touch with the Indian team and provided updates from them and translations of key document for me, as I don't read Punjabi.

As part of due diligence, the NRI team found some extra land that my father was entitled to through heritage. This increased the costs to register and transfer, but Gurjit didn't proceed but asked for my permission before proceeding with this work and was transparent about all costs. Copies of the Indian deeds were sent electronically initially and then original copies were available to collect from the Smethwick offices.

All the work was completed in a timely and professional way and I can fully and honestly recommend NRI Legal Services in Smethwick. Thank you Gurjit and all the team in the UK and those in India.
