Not really good enough for private work

I want to be clear from the outset that this review is for the Moorfields Private Eye Clinic at New Cavendish Street, not the surgeon himself who I have reviewed seperately.

I had prepared for a long initial consultation so had arrived on time for my appointment and was checked in efficiently both at the front desk (easily missed as it's off to the side as you enter) and at the clinic desk upstairs. I had my initial tests, then the fire alarm went off and things went wrong. Once we had returned from the building evacuation I waited for an hour in the smaller waiting area for the rest of my tests to be concluded and to meet with the surgeon - I don't know exactly what they did wrong but it was clear they had messed up the call sheet and thought I had been fully dealt with, so they started inviting the next patients through before me. It was only once one of the consultants caught my eye and recognised me that they realised they had made a mistake - they tried to cover by saying the fire alarm had backed up all the appointments but it was quite clear what had happened, and it shouldn't have.

Then on the day of the surgery I was asked to wait in the downstairs reception while they queried whether I had paid. To be very clear - I had a letter regarding payment queries but no payment link. Instead I had called the surgery on the number they gave, asked to speak to finance and was sent bank details to carry out a transfer - I sent the cash that day as I wanted to make sure it was settled well before surgery.

Back to the day I'm in reception, someone approached me - I presume from finance but she never told me - and accused me of not paying for my treatment. Anticipating this I showed the proof of payment on my phone; the finance (?) person had the gall to tell me I'd done it wrong and I'd paid Moorfields but not them (??) - there I was sitting in a Moorfields branded office surrounded by their logos being told that the payment I made on their instruction to their account was wrong. I was so stressed that I may miss my surgery that my heart rate was raised for a good half an hour. No apology for their continual mistakes was forthcoming.

My follow up appointment at City Road was fine, went without any issues; as did my follow up tests, but they really need to improve their admin and communication.

My Astonishing Care at Moorfields Private Eye Hospital

My care at Moorfields Private Eye Hospital for cataract surgery recently was quite exceptional. The surgery was performed by Mr Vincenzo Maurino who has incredible dexterity and gave me an amazing result. The professionalism and kindness from all his team were truly amazing! I will be eternally grateful for having been given back the most precious gift of sight.

Inconsistent, poor fee transparency

The fee system is very confusing. There's the fees on the Moorfields website, and as soon as you contact a consultant's secretary via the Moorfields website you get a completely different price that is only made apparent if you ask very specific details rather than it being volunteered. Despite these secretaries having Moorfields email addresses, they give you the consultant's private practise fees that don't even match the fees on the consultant's private website. So you end up with 3 different fee structures for the same consultant and same concern. It took many phone calls and many emails to various people for this to be explained to be me but they still seem to make up fees at some point. There needs to be more transparency on this.

I recently had eye surgery at Moorfields Private Eye Surgery, and I cannot express enough how exceptional my experience was. Initially, I was extremely nervous about the procedure, but the amazing staff made all the difference. From the pre-operation consultations to the post-operation care, everyone was incredibly supportive and professional.
Special thanks to Alex Day, my surgeon, who performed the operation with remarkable skill and precision. His calm demeanor and expertise put me at ease throughout the entire process. Additionally, Auriela, his administration assistant, was fantastic in coordinating everything and ensuring I felt comfortable and informed.
While there may be other places to consider for eye surgery, I wholeheartedly recommend Moorfields Private Eye Surgery. The level of care and attention I received here was unparalleled.

I had a very high Astigmatism and 6+ prescription and i am now just under 20/20 vision, although i looked at surgery previously i never felt comfortable until i went here. My only regret out of all of this was i didn't visit them sooner

Great

Great - had refractive lens replacement surgery with Dr Watson - first the left and a week later the right. It went very smoothly. Staff were lovely. I can see clearly now.

Average overall experience.

Overall experience at MOORFIELDS private eye hospital could have been better.
Equipment not clean.
All options not fully explained.
Overpriced for a paid consultation!
Would recommend other patients to get at least two other consultations to gauge the service ,cost , experience and options.

Highly Recommended

I sought to have corrective surgery for my eyes. After discussing options that the clinic provide it was determined that my eyes are not quite bad enough to require any treatment, and that I should maintain wearing reading glasses for the time being. Morefields are impartial and acting in the best interests of the patient, and not sales.

I recently had a chalazion removed…

I recently had a chalazion removed here. The surgery was quick and done on the same day. My consultant was extremely efficient. It is fairly on the expensive side but sometimes it’s hard to put a price on your health.

I have my life back - and the surgery was almost painless, staff friendly

The surgeon, Daniel Gore, was really friendly and professional. He told me I only needed one eye operated on which halved the expected cost. The nursing staff were utterly amazing and reassuring (can't praise them enough) and the procedure was over in seconds. The 'worst' bit was when they dropped a drop of water in my eye! For some reason I found that it made me feel as if I was drowning - really odd. My eyes were barely sore afterwards and my vision improved straightaway. I almost can't believe that I can now read tins in the supermarket and the label on my shampoo bottle. I have the eyes of a 20 year old - thanks SO much.

A GREAT EXPERIENCE!!!

The hospital is scrupulously clean and every single member of the staff I encounter were very helpful, friendly and professional.

Mr Alex Day performed cataract surgery on both my eyes. Before undergoing the operations, he made sure I was fully informed of what the procedure entailed and what to expect. He went through every single step of the process meticulously ensuring I was fully aware of what was happening at all times during the pre-op, op, and post-op. This allowed me to make an informed decision which was to go ahead with the operations. At no time he “over sold” the possible results and he stressed that because I have had laser done to me eyes 25 years ago, sometimes the results were unpredictable. A few weeks after the procedure I can affirm that the results are remarkable and my vision from both eyes has improved so much that I do not need the help of glasses. Mr Day has proven to me to be a great surgeon and his cordial and helpful personality made the whole process easy and painless. I will forever be grateful to him. THANK YOU, Mr Day, you gave me back my good vision.


All members of Mr Day team are friendly, helpful and efficient. There is one person I want to mention above all others and that is Aurelia Iarca, Private Practice Manager to Mr Alex Day. Aurelia was there from day one, informing, supporting, helping and no matter how busy she was, she always made time to answer a question, resolve a doubt or just plainly to let me know she was there for me. I could call her at any time if I needed to clarify something. She is warm, friendly, approachable and most of all she is very efficient. A great asset to Mr. Day’s team. THANK YOU, Aurelia, for all you have done for me.

I had a laser eye surgery

I had a laser eye surgery moving from -7.50 to 20/20 vision at Moorfields Private and it has absolutely changed my life!
The decision making process for such a big move related to your eyes may be daunting and scary but I felt well supported by the team and the surgeon. The cost for laser surgery here is slightly higher than with some other competitor providers and you have to pay for the initial appointment but the fact that they really take time to offer you the best service and advise and apply no pressure on you in making the decision really sets them apart. There are no hidden fees either and it's all inclusive. Highly recommended!

Total disappointment and waste of time

Total disappointment and waste of time. Very unprofessional administration team. Unacceptably poor service. Requested and got a refund.

It started with an appointment organised on a Friday at 9am, which was booked more than month in advance. It was for an initial consultation. They called me the previous evening, asking me if I can reschedule to later on the same day. I did not want to, because I wanted to get back to work as soon as possible, I have booked the earliest hour for a reason.

On the day, they redirected me to the children's clinic nearby, and made me waiting for about three hours(!) for the examination, so I finished around 12:30 pm. So much about getting back to the office in time. They charged me ₤350 on the spot and they promised me that I will receive the cost code for my operation (this is necessary to progress further).

About two weeks later I have received a letter, addressed to my parents, containing my results written in a language worded to my parents (???). I am a grown up man, not even living with my parents....

Also, I have received an invoice, with an amount of ₤270, which was obviously the wrong amount.

At that time, I still did not have the cost code, so I contacted them asking when will I have it.

Another two weeks later, they still have not sent anything, so I decided that I will no trust them anymore, so I have filed a complaint and requested a refund. They came back and apologised and promised me that they will examine my case, and shortly after that they promised me a refund.

After that, it took about a month(!), several e-mail exchanges, phone calls to actually send me the money back. They actually sent me the money only when I have told them I will escalate the issue to higher levels.

The only positive thing I can say is that the examination itself was quick and professional. But everything else was totally screwed. It took about two and half months to get back where I was before....

So I would not recommend this service, unless if you have lots of spare time to waste and can take frustrations well.

Considering the amount of money they charge you even for a 20 minutes examination, it is totally unacceptable.

I would not go back again even if they were the only eye clinic available...
